Joyce’s Story

Welcome to Joyce's CaringBridge site. We created it to keep our family and friends updated about how she is doing. We, also, encourage you to upload photos, to recall your adventures with her, and share your memories of Joyce.

As the days have passed since Joyce's fall last Wednesday, we continued to gain a greater understanding of the profound trauma to Joyce's brain and the myriad resulting complications. After consulting with the trauma doctors and neurologists earlier this week,  We decided to remove Joyce from life support and enroll her in a hospice program. She had a Living Will and we believe that our decision honors her wishes that were set out in that document.

On Thursday afternoon, Joyce left the hospital and was admitted to a nursing facility near our house -- you can see it from the front door!

Joyce is resting well and seems comfortable. Hospice will help with her care and guide us through the days to come.

It is unbelievable that her life has come to an end in such a surprising and tragic way --  especially since she so bravely and stubbornly fought cancer for nearly two years. As you can imagine, we are broken-hearted.

We appreciate your thoughts and prayers and the prayers. It means more than you could ever know. We hope that we can continue to count on them as we continue to care for Joyce in the coming days.

Latest Journal Update

With her family close by, Joyce passed away last night. A bright, beautiful light is gone from this world. We are so, so very sad, but we take solace in the gentle and peaceful way she left this Earth. Her great struggle is over and that is a great mercy.

We are grateful for all the thoughtful words that many of you have offered in these pages. The lovely stories, fond memories and kind words are and will continue to be a tremendous comfort to us.

Love on and hug on everyone you see today --  she would have wanted it that way.

Joyce was truly one of the brightest lights I have ever come across. I met Joyce when we made a trek to visit Normal Park, just as we were beginning our own Museum School. From the first second I met her, she waltzed into my heart. Every time I linked up with her, at conferences or here in Massachusetts where she worked with teachers in one of our Magnet schools, she was just the most bubbly, optimistic, caring, fun and fun-loving person imaginable. She is already sorely missed and my heart goes out to all her family and friends. My thoughts and prayers will be with you. Safe passage, Joyce. We will always love and honor you for the joy you brought to this world.
