Joshua’s Story

Josh was diagnosed with Malignant Rhabdoid Tumor of the Kidneys in January 2007. Treatment ended in September 2007. After 10 rounds of chemotherapy, 6 days of radiation, and surgery to remove each tumor from the kidneys Josh was cancer-free and doing GREAT! However, a biopsy was done July 2008 and cancer cells were present.

My name is Joshua Hardy and in January 2007, I was diagnosed with Malignant Rhabdoid Tumor of the Kidneys. I had a tumor on each of my kidneys. The left tumor was about the size of a softball when it was discovered and the right was about the size of a walnut. They had orginally thought that I also had a mass in my chest but, Praise God it was just an enlarged gland. I was considered to be stage 5 and had little to no chance. My treatment ended in September 2007. I had 10 rounds of chemotherapy, 6 days of radiation, and I had surgery to remove each tumor from both of my kidneys.

In July 2008 a biopsy was done and cancer cells were present in the thymus gland. This is the gland that has been an area of question since the beginning. It has now developed into a problem that needs attention. We will do 12 days of radiation and 2 or 3 more rounds of chemotherapy. There is a lot of hope that this incident can be eradicated. We continue to put all of our hope and faith in GOD.

Our prayer is to give thanks to GOD for a long healthy life filled with joy and blessings with Joshua and our other children. We give all the glory to GOD. Thank you for visiting my site and thank you for adding Josh to your prayer list.

We have been in Memphis this week....

My mind has been struggling with the situation going on with Josh's lungs lately. My heart holds on to the Faith I have in Jesus and the promise of GOD's word but we could really use your prayers.

As we have tried to ween the steroid (Budesonide), Josh's oxygen has been trending lower and lower. We were so encouraged by the bump in Josh's immune system numbers, we really pushed the ween of the Budesonide. We however created a big stress on Josh's lungs.

Josh had a CT scan this week that revealed a hot mess of inflammation and fibrosis. It was very disconcerting to see the change from this past January's scan to this week's.

We have of course had to go back to daily Budesonide. But Josh's doctor has decided to try a new drug, Imatinib. He is hoping that the Imatinib can help correct the inflammation and rid us of the need of the Budesonide. Both Budesonide and Imatinib reduce the immune system's ability to recover but they are very necessary right now for Josh's lung function. With the cold and flu season in effect we have cause for great concern. And Josh has picked up a cold which is not helping things.

We need prayer for Josh and lots of it. If you are willing, I want you to write the drug name Imatinib on a piece of paper and write Josh on another piece of paper. And hold these two pieces in your hand as you pray.....

Father GOD we thank you for the hope you give us through this drug Imatinib. We thank you for its ability to heal inflammation in Josh's lungs and help rid any need of Budesonide for Josh. We thank you for these tools you provide as vehicles of your healing power. Thank you by JESUS' stripes and wounds Josh's lungs and entire body is healed here on earth. We give all the glory to YOU, in JESUS' name we pray. Amen.

When Josh's lungs heal and we can get rid of the Budesonide and the Imatinib, Josh's body will really fall into place of his complete healing. Josh's heart is a miracle. The echocardiogram tech told me that every time Josh's cardiologist reviewed his echo, he would find her and say "are you sure this is Josh Hardy's echo?" It has made an unbelievable recovery.

Josh's kidneys are very good. His blood work looked amazing. Despite the oxygen challenges Josh continues to gain strength. Josh even grew taller from the last visit to this one. There is so much good to be thankful about. We just need the final piece of the puzzle with his lungs healing and his immune system will recover as well. It will all fall into place.

I trust it is GOD's Will to heal Josh because the Lord's Prayer Jesus taught us says "GOD's Will be done on earth as it is Heaven". I know in Heaven there is no sickness or disease so it is GOD's Will that we live in perfect health and peace here on earth. We just need to claim it and believe we have received it. 1 John 5:14-15 says “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” I have great confidence Josh's lungs are healed. I just need to remember 2 Corinthians 5:7 ‭‭“For we live by faith, not by sight.”

I have to confess my mind is struggling right now. I have been having mental tizzy fits for weeks now. I wonder if GOD allows the constant catch 22 that is Josh's health to keep me close to Him. When all is going well I get so caught up in this hectic life we have created with work and sports that I find that I don't even think about GOD at all. Shame on me. I have witnessed such great miracles; how could I lose my focus on GOD. And yet I do. It's when things are not quite right with Josh that I seek GOD so intensely. And I always find Him and I find peace but why must I drift. Maybe Josh would have received his full and complete healing a long time ago if I could just keep my eyes on Jesus at all times. Miracles really happen when I seek GOD whole heartedly.

We return to Memphis on February 1st for a week of testing. January 10th marks Josh's 2 year transplantaversary. We are in prayer that the next CT scan will show that the Imatinib has done wonders to clear inflammation in Josh's lungs. We appreciate all your prayers, love and support. I have one more verse that I want to share. It spoke to me about patience, which I need tremendously. Lamentations 3:22-24 says "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.””

Please, Aimee, never think for a moment that Josh's situation is in any way your fault. God would not be wanting you to think with such a heavy heart, with such guilt. After all, He is the only perfect One, not us, and He knows where your true heart is. He understands. He knows you are juggling a heavy load with life and family and a boy battling for his health.

In the meantime, all of us here on the back lines, are praying for Josh's health and recovery, and that the Imatinib will do its job, and he can finally be rid of the Budesonide. Then all the pieces truly will fall into place. Merry Christmas to all of you. <3

Dearest Aimee,
I, too, have settled into complacency and forgotten about Josh, thinking he is "on the road to recovery" without further complications. That is surely what we want but we are not there yet. He is still recovering. It is a longer, more complicated, interconnected process than we hoped, but he is still on a path of getting better until this is all a bad memory. You are a leader for us, leading us to communion with God, to remembering the fragility of life, the miracles that have already happened, and our continued need for God. Thank you for speaking up, for keeping us informed, for calling us to prayer. May your Christmas be full of the hope and peace and love of Christ. My love to you all.
