Joseph Sharkey's Journal
Written Jul 17, 2013 10:47am by Samantha Sharkey2 weeks into transitioning home and Joe is doing great. He is gaining weight back, 4 lbs so far, and is scheduled for outpatient physical and cognitive therapy 5 days a week. He has enjoyed going to dinner with friends and will be relaxing on the cape with family + friends for the remaining summer weekends. We will next update as school year approaches. Until then I've posted a picture of Joe walking from beach in the photos section so everyone can see how great he looks!
Written Jul 9, 2013 6:43pm by Samantha SharkeyThanks everyone for following my updates I'm glad I was able to keep you all connected. Joe wanted to have the last word and give his thanks to everyone out there who has been with him thru this whole ordeal:
This has without a doubt been the toughest two months of my entire life. It truly warmed my heart every time someone that saw me right after the injury, saw me again in the present, and held a bewildered look on their face at how much I've improved. While Spaulding certainly deserves a lot of credit for this vast improvement, it's clear to me that almost as large a part of my recovery is due to all of the compassion shown to me by my loved ones. The countless visits from friends and family have made me so thankful for the amazing support system I have in place. I wanted to thank each and every one of you for your thoughts and prayers throughout this process because this would have been so much more difficult without all of you by my side.
Free at last
Written Jul 8, 2013 8:30pm by Samantha SharkeyIf you're planning to visit Joe at Spaulding tomorrow, don't bother- because he won't be there! He is being discharged from Spaulding tomorrow at 10:00am and is finally coming HOME. After 2 months, 2 major surgeries, several procedures, and countless hours of therapy Joe is finally able to come home. We are so excited and overjoyed to have him back.
He spent his last day at Spaulding today in rigorous therapy and was rewarded with kayaking in the harbor. It's the longest time he has spent outside in months. The next couple months are scheduled heavily with multiple therapies. And Joe is anxious to try to return to Brown, at least part time, in the fall.
We are all very, very grateful for the support and love you have shown our family during this trying time. We thank you all from the very bottom of our hearts for everything. We did it!
Had to post a picture of Joe with his favorite therapist at Spaulding. Look at that gorgeous round head!!
