My Story

My name is John Hanna and I'm a 36 year old FA patient. Fanconi Anemia is a rare disease that normally causes bone marrow failure at an early age. It is also associated with a high incidence of cancers of the head and neck. I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in situ on my tongue in March 2007. This is my story.

I apologize for not updating this sooner but I've been absolutely swamped at work and busy at home.  My appointment on Tuesday went much better than expected.  Dr. Medina took a good look around and really didn't see much to be concerned with.  He said the tongue looked pretty good and even though the pathology report showed some moderate dysplasia it also showed some yeast which can itself lead to dysplasia.  He will continue to monitor the area.

As for the throat, the repeat laryngoscopy did not show the same raised white area so it must've been mucus like NIH was hoping.  One of my false cords still showed some fulness and in fact looked exactly like it did a month ago.  He'd like me to come back in 6 weeks and we will repeat again and if the false cord still looks the same we will continue to monitor but not to the same degree.  Most people apparently aren't symmetrical anyway and typically he wouldn't even mention or probably notice a "fulness" of a false cord but due to FA he wants to be safe.  I like safe!  Overall, it was a really good report and I am very relieved as I was going in expecting the worst.

That's all for now.  I'm a celebrity, get me out of here!

John

PS-- Is this Spencer Pratt guy just a complete douche or what?
