Hi everyone. We just wanted to share some exciting news on the research front. Starting next week, a drug trial will begin on a patient with Leigh's disease in South Carolina. This will be the first time a patient will ever receive a drug specifically designed for the treatment of mitochondrial disease.
The drug company is called Edison Pharmaceuticals, the only company that I know of that is focused solely on researching compounds to treat mitochondrial disease. I've been following their progress but was not aware until recently that they were about to begin treating this patient. So let's all say a little prayer that this drug is effective at increasing energy production in this little girl's cells. It could mean a better life for Joey and other kids like him.
Importantly, the JDM Fund has disbursed funds to two of the mito research centers that are working with Edison Pharmaceuticals. So that means that your donations have directly contributed to helping us get to this point. We are very thankful to have such generous and caring friends and family.
Speaking of raising money, our Strike out Mito fundraising is well underway and we are off to a good start -- we've raised over $16,000 in the first 3 weeks. Our goal is to hit $50,000 this year and we have two months to go so we're optimistic. Below is the link to find information on the event and to RSVP or donate: http://thejdmfund.org/page3/page3.html.
Please spread the word and e-mail us at thejdmfund@gamil.com if you have any suggestions of people to whom you'd like for us to send an invitation (or you can just forward them the link above).
Thanks and we hope everyone is enjoying the summer (despite the wet weather!).
Love -
Joe & Gab
