Jake Carlson's Journal
The latest and greatest
Written Oct 18, 2013 2:15pmHELLO EVERYONE!
So, here is the latest with Jake. He has been super busy kickin' cancer's butt! As his [many] tumors continue to shrink from all of the endless chemotherapy he has obtained since my last entry, we keep our hopes and prayers going as we have had some AMAZING news. Jake had had a CT scan about a month ago that showed that his tumors have shrunk anywhere from 65-90%. Yes that sounds like a big margin, however, understand that that is saying that some have shrunk 65% and some 90%. We are so grateful for all of the hard work Jake's team of doctors and nurses have done. No one fights alone.
Since that CT scan, Jake underwent ANOTHER cycle of chemotherapy. The chemotherapy he gets is 5 days of going to the infusion center to be hooked up for a few hours, then two days off, then one day of a quick chemo infusion push. Then, he had a few weeks off.
Last week, Jake had a PET scan. The PET Scan is a scan that shows the 'activity' of the cancer cells in his body. We are always hoping that the tumors are "LESS ACTIVE" which, in Jake's case MOST WERE!!! However, there was one spot, up by Jake's lung (not in his lung, but on the tissue outside of it), that was slightly more active, and has to be kept under close surveillance.
So, where are we today? Well, the scans have been sent down to the University of MN, for Jake's team of doctors and surgeons to take a look at. For now, Jake is scheduled to start another cycle of chemotherapy on Monday, however, if the doctors from the University come back and say that we need to have another meeting with them and their surgeons, we very well could be in the cities next week. According to Jake's doctor, Dr. Sande, from Essentia, surgery is getting closer! How close? That is up to the doctors down at University. And we can only pray and hope that the end of this is soon!
Thank you so much for your continued support, thoughts and prayers. We truly value everyone who has sent encouraging thoughts our way. Keep sending messages to Jake, he read and appreciates the kind words.
With love and gratitude,
Laura, Boston & Scarlett

Written Aug 8, 2013 11:06amHey everyone,
First and foremost, I must sincerely apologize for not updating this. There is no excuse for not keeping all of our cherished friends and family in the loop. Please remember too, you can contact me on FB (like many have!) or call/txt Jake or myself if you just want to say hi!
On to the real stuff now.... Jake has been undergoing chemotherapy all summer long. He has been making progress and we have the CT and PET scans to prove it. The doctors have estimated that Jake's tumors have had a total of 60-70% shrinkage from the beginning. YAHOO! But we're not there yet. The surgeon down at University would like one of his tumors in particular to get as small as possible before removal for the sake of "compromising his quality of life". So, as long as Jake is still responding to chemotherapy, and there is continuing shrinkage, more chemotherapy will be on the order. It is ideal to get all of the tumors as small as possible, so when the surgeon takes them out, there won't be as much tissue removed...it only makes sense I guess!
So, after the week long chemotherapy treatments, where Jake goes into the Essentia 1st Street Building Infusion Center for many hours a day, he has week of being super sick, about another week feeling better, then he starts back up again! We've learned, as a family, to take total advantage of that week or so that Jake is feeling good. We travel to our cabins a lot, take the kids to the Aquarium or to a park, and visit with family and friends.
Jake continues to take my breath away each and every day. We are so proud of him, he is so strong, and we know how hard it is on him when he feels so sick and tired and GRUMPY (sorry, had to put it in there, Jake, because your mom and I both get that part!) day in and day out, but we love him unconditionally, and we are so thankful for the support and thoughts and prayers from our friends and family. They've been heard!
Thank you, and please feel free to let him know your thinking of him!
P.s. the kids are doing great. Scarlett is as busy as ever, and we can say the same for Boston. They are enjoying summer and the many delights of being a kid. Gosh, don't we all wish we could be kids again? Where our biggest worries are making sure our sibling doesn't take our toy and we can run around in our underwear and just hop in our (hot-wheels) JEEP, and just cruise! Ahh, the life! Enjoy the rest of your summer,
Laura, Boston and Scarlett
