My Story

Welcome to Jack's CaringBridge site that has been created to keep friends and family updated.

Jack Thomas Hufty was born on May 4th, 2007 at Community North Hospital and was soon transferred to Riley Children's Hospital. He was 10 weeks premature due to EA/TEF. In the winter of 2009 several other congenital anomalies of his brain and spine were found.

More good news! Dr. Ackerman (neurosurgeon) said his incisions look good and he can now bathe and swim, yeah! She just wants us to keep them covered with guaze and a little bacitracin to keep them from getting infected or rubbed open from his clothing. She was very happy that he was back to his normal activities and said to tell his therapists to have no mercy on him. Since Jack is rarely having any symptoms of his hydrocephalus, chiari malformation, or syrinx we are just going to sit back and relax for a while. His head circumference is around the 50th percentile and not increasing abnormally so that is good news too. He will have his neurogenic bladder retested in September to see if the surgery helped to restore the nerve function to his bladder. That will also be the next time we meet with Dr. Ackerman. As long as he remains healthy he doesn't have another doctor appt. until July 30th, WOW, almost an entire month without an appt!

Jack still remains vomit free, with just a little spit up after moving too much too soon after a g-tube feeding. He is also eating orally pretty well. Last night he devoured spaghetti and meatballs (ground up meatballs and noodles cut small, of course). A little later Logan was eating an ice cream cone and Jack asked for ice cream so I tried to give him a little on a spoon. He threw a huge toddler tantrum until I asked if he wanted a cone like Logan. He immediately sat up and said ya, so I made him his own cone fully anticipating I would be eating it. He loved it! Rion(ST) and Stephanie(OT) you're not going to believe this, but his tongue was coming way out licking up that ice cream. I only got to eat some of the actual cone to make it easier to eat the ice cream.

We hope everyone has an enjoyable 4th of July weekend. We will probably be heading to Columbus to do our annual kids parade, cookout, maybe the pool/golf, we will see whether either of the boys can make it late enough for fireworks with our friends Tyler and Laura and their girls. As always thanks for continuing to check on and pray for Jack!

God Bless
