Gavin’s Story

Site created on September 18, 2012

Hi everyone. My name is Gavin Payne Hoime. I was born on September 7th via c-section. I was a big boy weighing in at 10lbs 1.5oz and was very long at 21 inches. I was excited to meet my mommy, daddy, and my sister Kayden. I spent a few days in the hospital with mommy and then went home Monday with my family here in Grand Forks. I was a happy healthy baby boy.

I enjoyed my first few days home with my family before I started to feel sick and not want to eat. By Thursday, I was running a fever and not eating well. I went to see the doctor and he said I needed to go into the hospital to get some antibiotics. On Friday morning, I started to have some seizures and I stopped breathing. Due to this I was int-abated and sent to the Fargo NICU via helicopter. While there I suffered more seizures before getting medicine to help me calm down. During thr seizures I would stop breathing. I had to keep my vent going until I got the seizures under control. Once the seizures were under control I was able to remove my breathing tube on Sunday afternoon. I was happy. Mommy and Daddy then got the scary news that I suffered some serious brain damage and that I now had a long road to travel. I am working hard to heal and try to find out how I got sick.
Right now I am still getting some help to breath, trying some feedings with a tube, and trying to keep my seizures under control in order to heal. I am making some more baby like movements and sounds, but I am really sleepy most of the day. I struggle to breath when I am awake and when my nurses care for me. I like to keep my eyes closed, but they work just fine. I now have an Occupational Therapist helping try to gain strength and get my motor skills back. Now I just keep working on things and see if my brain will heal.

Journal entry by Jennifer Hoime

Gavin had to have his hip plates and screws removed due to bone shape shifting. The plates were causing pain and a swollen mass near his hip joints. Surgery was on Tuesday and everything went smoothly. This was a great relief and a surprise. He was able to come home the same evening. He is healing now and in the next 6 weeks he should be great.
Summer school went well and he is now on break until he starts again. He will have a new teacher but be in the same program he was in for kindergarten.
He has a little cough but we are keeping an eye on how it develops. For now, he is going to enjoy a few days at the lake with his family. Have an amazing day everyone.
