You are invited to make a prayer flag

Strands of hundreds of prayer flags are being created by the community to fly over the site of the avalanche to promote health and healing. The flags will be strung together, to be hung at the site on Thursday, March 13, at 5:30 pm. Let us bless this site and these good people, Fred, Michel, and their families, whose lives have been forever changed by this unexpected event.

Prayer flags, also called Wind Horses in Tibetan tradition, are used in some Buddhist traditions to bless the surrounding countryside and to send out and call in what is good in life.

You may participate by making one and sending it to project organizer Claire Emery, 2810 Woodland Avenue, Missoula MT 59802. You can reach her at

If you are in Missoula, materials will be available and flags will be collected at the Jeanette Rankin Peace Center through Wednesday. You can also drop off prayer flags in a box on Claire's porch.

Use lightweight cotton cloth, brightly colored or textured, especially in blues, greens, aquas: the colors of the ocean that Michel so loved.  Decorate with embroidery thread, Sharpies, or applique, or just say a prayer.

Make a rectangular cloth approximately 6”x9”.  The long side will be folded over at the top to create a roomy, hollow, 1-inch seam through which the nylon string will be threaded to hang it. You may leave it plain or decorate it as you wish with your prayers and hopes for Fred and Michel, their families, and all those affected by the slide.

This project is a manifestation of the goodwill of many folks.
