Emma’s Story

Emma had started with E. Coli and then got the disease HUS (hemolytic uremic syndrome) which causes kidney failure. This disease only occurs in 3 to 15% of children, Emma was one of the percentage. She had surgery to put the tube in her stomach to start the dialysis. This will help her kidneys to start functioning, but it is a slow process. This process can take any where from 2 to 8 weeks maybe longer. We are just taking it day by day and praying that her kidneys will start working on their own.

Just please keep Emma in your prayers for a speedy recovery and her kidneys start working. As soon as that happens we will able to go home!!! We are all waiting for that day to come.

Latest Journal Update

Update on Emma 12/14/2013

First and foremost, I would like to thank all of the people who attended the Zumbathon and Diamond Path fest!!! Also all of the great people who made the events happen :) They were both so much fun! We are so blessed to have so many caring people around us.

Now the update on Emma. I apologize for not updating more frequently. We are so happy to be home and recovering at home. She did start out start half days at school for a week and a half until after Thanksgiving break. She got the okay from her doctor to go full time, but had the option of going home if she got too tired. Not Emma though, she toughed it out everyday.

Her hemoglobin is now up to 8.5, yay!!!!  We had the scary thought that she may need a blood transfusion because her hemoglobin was dropping again and got as low as 6.4. Normal is about 14. But, she started on the iron pills and gradually started going up on its own. She is still on 4 medications one is for her blood pressure, iron pills, calcium and the other one is help keep her urine system clean. She is still having doctor appointments every other week for her blood work to check her kidney function and her hemoglobin. All of her other numbers are decreasing still. She is still on her special diet of low potassium, low sodium, and low phosphorus. We're hoping this will change after another month or two.

We we had a wonderful Thanksgiving, so much to be thankful for. We are so happy to have our little girl home and all of us together again! Again, we can not thank everyone enough for all of the donations, meals, love and support.

We want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas from our family to yours.

With love,

The Heidish Family

How is Emma today?? I have a 12year old boy named Nicholas Mayes with the hus,,, he's been at children's hospital now for 46 days. We are waiting for his kidneys to start to fully function . He also had to have a colostomy done. Can't wait to get him back home. We have no idea where he got this from.
