Elijah’s Story

My name is Elijah Robert Thomas Morris. I am 21 months old and I am here at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, beating the odds in what is commonly a very deadly disease.

Everyday brings with it new challenges, but also great successes. Mommy and Daddy are with me around the clock and I feel safe knowing they are near. I miss going to the park and going down slides with mommy. Gabriel, my baby brother, will be here soon, and I'm pretty excited!!

With the prayers and support of many, I know that God is working a miracle in me. Thank you all so much, and I look forward to seeing you all soon :)

It all started Wednesday morning at 0300 when my mom came to check on me and I had a very high fever. As the day went on, purple spots started appearing on my skin, and I couldn't keep anything down in my stomach. Mom and dad made an appointment at the Hutchinson Hospital and that's where the doctors discovered something was very wrong with my body. I was air lifted to Children's around 1730 Wednesday night and am now in a fight for my life.

With all the prayers and support of many, I know that God is working a miracle in me. Thank you all so much, and I look forward to seeing you all soon, minus the machines, tubes, and everything else :)

Latest Journal Update

Elijah's1st maintenance sugery

Hello Caringbridge friends,

It’s been almost a year since the last update! Not much and
a whole lot has happened since the last post.

Hanna Grace was born October 8th, 2012. She was healthy,
cute and sweet as can be. She continues to be a doll at 7 months old!

Elijah is facing his first of, possibly, many maintenance
surgeries during his growing years of life.  With the damage to his growth plates in his
left wrist and tibia bones of his lower legs, there has been some uneven growth
at his wrist and ankles. There probably won’t be a need to do anything about
his wrist until he’s 15, if anything needs to be done at all. (Praying that it
continues to grow well!)

Tomorrow, Wednesday May 22nd, I will take Elijah
to Gillette Children’s in St. Paul where they will do a surgery on the inside
leg bone of his lower left leg. (Tibia) They will ultimately break that bone,
which will allow them to un-club his foot.
He has been walking more and more on the outside side of his foot. After
the bone is broken, they will be able to make the sole of his foot come back
down to the floor. Since doing this will create a gap in the bone, they will
put a calcium wedge in there to sort of fill the gap and then secure the bone
with a mental plate and screws. They will also damage the good growth plate
that is at the base of his left fibula (the outside lower leg bone). In doing
this, it will stunt this bone’s grows more so we may not have to do a surgery
like this again for another 5 years versus every 2-3. I guess most of the
growth happens in the growth plates at your knee, so they expect him to lose
about 2 inches of height on his left leg by doing this. Easily corrected by
using a shoe lift!

The nurse I talked to yesterday said we will be there 2-5
days after the surgery and then I will bring him back home! He will wear a
non-weight bearing cast for 6-10 weeks and then a weight bearing cast after
that, until the bones are healed!  I was
SO looking forward to summer and all the swimming and sandbox time that would
happen outside, but now with a cast on Elijah, his summer is going to look a
little different. I’ll have to get creative and do activities/crafts that keep
his casts clean and dry! If anyone has any good ideas of things to do, let me
know!

Please be in prayer for Elijah as he has to take 1 step
backwards after taking 2 steps forward. He has a lot of pain to endure this
summer and I have to try to keep everyone happy! Please pray however the Lord
leads you for Elijah and his family! He just finished up his 1st
year of pre-school and goes back for his 2nd year September 9th.
I sure hope he’s feeling back to his good old self by then,  if not better!

Thank you everyone! God’s blessing on you all!
