Mary Doust Gundrum!!! Beth Jacobs Lasseter here! I had heard about your story through my sister-in-law, Amanda (Mills) Jacobs, my brother's wife. Her mom is Mary Beth Mills. And, I saw your Boston Globe story posted on Facebook by Maureen (Binder) Ratnayake, who is one of my fellow UD classmates! What wonderful Catholic circles we travel in, right? Your little Dominic looks just like his Aunt Becky. The story is truly amazing. What a powerful witness you have given to the world, and to the medical community in particular, about the sanctity of each human life. I'm sure your Dominic's surgery will advance medical education by another decade, given how few of these wonderful docs and med students get to witness such an amazing and rare surgery. It is a powerful thing on so many levels. I saw Becky not long after her own scare, and am struck with how many trials your family has faced with such faith and courage. You are a wonder, dear lady! How truly blessed is our life- such a gift, but so often so bittersweet. Your post about how your experience in the hospital and the people you met there changed your perspective forever rings so true. I had a very similar experience almost 9 years ago when I was going through chemotherapy for breast cancer. There is so much that goes on "behind the veil" and so many people who suffer in hospitals! But they are cared for by so many amazing people. Your docs and nurses were already wonderful before it all began, but now your family has given them a new reason to rejoice in their profession and what it does for the sick and suffering. How many of those opportunities are lost when a child is aborted...but your story of hope stands in the gap and shows others that anything is possible. I don't want to sound patronizing, but I am so proud of you. I hope that if you ever come to MN to visit we may catch a glimpse of you and your wonderful family. I would love to meet Master Dominic Pio some day, and see if he continues to favor his Auntie Becky in looks...Many blessings and hugs to you and yours, from your old World Youth Day pal, Beth Jacobs Lasseter (and from all of us Jacobs folks- Sarah, too!!!)
