Telling the kids

I told the kids last night about my breast cancer. They were amazing. Dahlia wiped her brow and said "phew!" when I said early on in the conversation that I was going to be okay. Ben asked if my hair was going to fall out (won't know about chemo until a few weeks after surgery). When Dahlia asked what surgery is, Ben enacted cutting off her shoulder and then sewing it back on. Then spontaneously, as if on cue, Ben stood up and started singing the 90's pop song, "Everybody Dance Now" as he and Dahlia started shaking it on the living room rug (appropriately called the dance floor in our house). Okay then. We are all going to be okay. Thanks to all of you who are sending out positive juju for me and my family. It's working!

Deborah - just loved, loved , loved your video. I am an Australian community health nurse living in Vietnam - but am home in Sydney having discovered my own breast cancer. Have had one mastectomy, 5 months of chemo, am halfway through radiation - and will have the other breast and ovaries out in Jan. Like you I have created as much joy, gratitude and humour along the way on this journey and it has made the burden so much easier for me and all who love me. Good luck on your journey and may you find the meaning and beauty in this as I have.

HI Deborah. Wow. 9 years ago when I told my boys who were then 8, 6 and 3 that I had breast cancer they stared at me until I simply said "But I'm going to be okay" then they relaxed and asked if they could watch Spongebob. As my two oldest walked away I looked at my then 3YO I said "Hey baby, mommy has breast cancer" I said it more for myself then him - I guess I just wanted to hear it out loud. He said "I want chocolate!" "So do I! Let's go get some!" And we did. Rest and heal. You are loved.

Just saw your video clip on the news, and then I went online to see the entire video. All I can say is Wow!!!! You are indeed an inspiration to a lot of people by not letting the moment consume you and the the others around you, but doing totally the opposite. The energy that I observed from you was amazing. I pray for a speedy recovery for you and your family. Judging by your spirit, you will not be down for long at all. God Bless.
