Although I never knew David personally, I knew of his personality from a couple of my friends who sing in APM and from my observations of his style at concerts I attended.
He will be a great loss to the Capital District and beyond. My  thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

So sad for your loss. Dave was a colleague of mine in the Suny Albany music department. Although I teach there once a week, Dave always made me feel like I was welcomed by the rest of the faculty. He would always give me a pat on the back and wish me luck with my Jazz Ensemble each semester. Truly a genuine caring person. I will miss him.

Dear Paige, Katy and Michael,'

The grieving over anticipated loss has become the grieving over actual loss.  It must help you to know that countless others who loved David are grieving with you.  David was so easy to love.  He gave to the community, and far beyond, countless wonderful gifts of music, sometimes transforming those who didn't care for choral music until they heard what he did with it.  He has been loved, though not only for the music but for the man he was.  David's character and personality were a blend of intelligence, wit, compassion and joy. What a blend, what a man. We join with you and so many others at this sad time.  We are thankful to have had the privilege of knowing him.

I am so sorry for your family's loss, my prayers to you in this time of such utter sadness.  David was unfailingly kind, compassionate and so, so gifted as a teacher, conductor and musician.  He touched countless lives and countless hearts, as these pages show.

The melody and words of a gifted madrigalist, singer and performer resonate (sadly) this morning:

Pavane Lachrimae
                 John Dowland

Flow, my teares, fall from your springs!
Exiled for ever, let me mourn;
Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings,
There let me live forlorn.

To Paige and Family,

David brought much light to all he touched and he brought humanity, erudition, humor, enlightenment and more.

We, in the extended musical family of the Capital Region, mourn his loss and offer our deepest condolences to you.
I am sure I am only one of a legion of people who are happy to offer whatever help and comfort to you in this time of grief.   Whatever you need, it is offered and will be there.

DJ will live on in the hearts of all of us. He was an exceptional person, mentor and friend. Every time I hear a masterful piece of music (or something completely new or unique) I think of him.  He opened up so many doors for me and had such a major, positive impact on me as a musician and person.  I have so many memories of the years I sang with him, and they always make me smile. He was one of the funniest, thoughtful, committed, passionate and caring people I have known, and I feel honored to have known him as a teacher and friend.  My thoughts, prayers and love are with you all.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep,
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle Autumn rain

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quite birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there, I did not die

Paige, Katy & Michael, I am truly sorry for your loss. David was a friend & colleague almost since his arrival at SUNY 30 years or so ago. I'm glad Hospice was caring for David. The "ad" they ran on radio was kind of hokey--"I dont know who cleans their wings & polishes their halos..." But it was on the money. They cared for my Aunt Julia till the very end.

On behalf of my Partner/Spouse, Tim Montgomery, I express our deepest sympathy & prayers to you. Indeed, be glad David is no longer in pain. And God needed him to conduct His choir!
