Many of you joined us last summer at the Third Annual Sailing with Shino event on Lake Minnetonka. It was a joy to share stories, talk about the mission of the Daniel C. Shinozaki Memorial Fund and share in a beautiful Minnesota summer day while sailing on the lake.
We are excited to host the Fourth Annual Sailing with Shino event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the Wayzata Community Sailing Center located at 456 Arlington Circle S. in Wayzata. The event is free, however donations for the memorial fund are graciously accepted. The day will be filled with Daniel’s friends and family, lunch, sailing lessons, and reconnecting with others who knew Daniel, Dan or “Shino.” To clarify, we don’t intend for this event to be treated as an open house, as we have exciting activities throughout the full time. But, we are glad to have your presence for as long as you can be there. This year we will begin the event with sailing at 10 a.m., followed by a complimentary picnic lunch.
The Daniel C. Shinozaki Memorial Fund is a non-profit 501(c)3 foundation supporting youth programs through the Wayzata Community Sailing Center (WCSC). With the generosity of people like you, we have raised over $20,000 to date. Last year (similar to past years), these funds were used to underwrite and sponsor approximately two dozen outreach programs and a dozen at-risk children’s participation in sailing camp. The funds raised at the First Annual Sailing with Shino event allowed WCSC to purchase a 420 sailboat, which was christened in 2011 as the “Sailing with Shino” boat. This sailboat is also being used for daily high school practice and for the University of Minnesota and University of St. Thomas sailing teams.
Additionally, the WCSC will host the Third Annual Daniel Shinozaki Memorial Youth Sailing Regatta on Friday, July 25, 2014. Held in partnership with Twin Cities Youth Sailing, the 2013 regatta garnered more than 100 young sailors and the winners’ names were added to a legacy plaque engraved with Daniel’s name and photo on it. Organizers are looking for volunteers for this year’s regatta, please email HCCapper@aol.com if you are interested in lending a helping hand for this fun event.
We ask that you continue to support us in honoring Daniel by matching your previous donation(s), or consider making a new donation. Our fundraising goal is again to underwrite additional outreach programs and to sponsor two weeks of scholarships to deserving children. We hope you can help us reach our goal of attaining $3,000 in donations this year.
We will be collecting donations at the event on July 27 and also accepting them through mail if you are unable to attend. All contributions are tax-deductible and can be sent to the “Wayzata Sailing Foundation”, P.O. Box 768 Wayzata, MN, 55391. Please make checks payable to “Wayzata Sailing Foundation” with a memo indicating “Daniel C. Shinozaki Memorial Fund.” To help us plan for the July 27 event, please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org or call Micki Sievwright at 651-261-2058.
