My Story

Our son, Daniel Shank-Rowe was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on 25 Nov. 2006. He began a 108-week treatment protocol on Monday, 27 Nov, and due to his great attitude and wonderful care, he is responding to treatment!

Everyone's help and support has truly been the key to getting us through this. We appreciate your messages of encouragement! Thank you!!

Happy Birthday to US (pun intended) on the holiday weekend.

Breaking news (no pun intended) - Daniel broke his shinbone last night while on vacation in Palm Desert, CA, with Mom and a slew of his cousins (Dad and Ryan stayed home for a camp for Ryan).  Daniel had a great, physical week playing with cousins ranging in age from 18 down to six.  Late each evening, as the desert cooled and the facilities turned on the sprinklers, the cousins would run around playing tag and other games.  Daniel's mobility and speed are really coming back, but he broke it sliding (no further details).  The good news is he is really regaining his athleticism, the down news is that he'll be limited for a while now (should not affect him going to Tech Adventure Camp the next two weeks).

Current news - Mom and Dad met with Dr. Shad last Friday to discuss the end-of-treatment summary and potential long-term impacts for Daniel.  We got a summary of the cumulative chemotherapy and radiation given to Daniel during his protocol, as well as how he grew, how he responded, deviations (due to illness, such as his pneumonia in Spring '08), etc.  Too much detail to pass on, but it's encouraging to know to that while the protocol is over, the care for his wellbeing is not.  Daniel will go monthly for checkups this first year, then every two months the second year, every three months the third, then annually, to check his progress.

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers.  We sometimes review the postings we received during the initial months after his diagnosis, when the road ahead was not so clear, and see the tremendous support he (and we) received throughout this process, from prayers to meals to passing thoughts and hopes - although not tangible in a certain sense, we're confident that all these helped pull us through!
