Dear Friends and Family, it has been a while since we have posted any updates so here is some of the good news: We won the appeal and the insurance agreed to allow Dan to continue his therapies out-of-network at the Center for Head Injury Services (yea!). The bad news: He is now ½ through the rehab benefit and it will end for the year next month. He still has the drop foot and tendons and muscles are not stretched enough in the left leg that he can bear weight on it. In therapy they are working on balance and transfers using the one good leg. Dan is standing more when he has something to hold on to but he is really just holding himself up with his arms and one leg, this does show how much stronger he is getting. We continue to work on the stretching and exercising, especially the left leg. Dan has to make a conscious effort to move this leg – it’s not an automatic reflex. His long term memory is great; his short term memory is fair. He has difficulty remembering names and sometimes what he had to eat – but he generally remembers the baseball scores from the night before. He has a good, positive attitude, and continues to work on getting better.
This week, June 10th Dan has been home one year after spending 71/2 months in hospitals and rehabs. We consider this to be an anniversary worth celebrating. He remembers the day he came home; the ride back from Carbondale, our family and friends welcoming him in the driveway, plus all the work that was done to get the place ready for him. It was truly a blessing and an answer to a lot of prayers that he had made enough progress to come home. Dan is thankful for every day he has here with us and we ask that you remember him in your prayers that he does continue to make progress and recovery from his brain injury.
