Everything went great yesterday with the heart cath. Dr. Sutton had suggested we do this because Colin's oxygen level was down at his last visit, but when they hooked him up yesterday his oxygen level was 92%. Which was quite a shock, for one because we were told in the beginning, due to him having the shunt, his O2 level would only be in the 70's or 80's, but hey we weren't going to argue with that. I was hopeing that when the Cardiologist, Dr. Baker, came in he'd say we didn't have to do it, but that wasn't the case. He said that we would have to do it anyway before surgery and we might as well get it done, plus if we did it then, then he probably won't need to have another one done. And how Colin acted after the procedure, We're glad it was done now, cause he was not happy, and who knows how angry he would have gotten when he is older.
Before it started Dr. Baker came in to explain what he would be doing, risks, and benefits. Again, another amazing Dr. at Children's Hospital, we couldn't ask for more. It was amazing how calming everything became after he talked. As with all of the Dr.'s we have met, he sat down to our level and spoke to us as a person, instead of some other Dr.'s who don't really give you much attention. (Have to give props to all medical personel that we have met there, they are amazing!!!)
When they were going to begin, they let us walk with them to the room so we could give him kisses before they started. The whole procedure probably lasted an hour and a half to two hours. Dr. Sutton was at the hospital and popped in to see how it was going, then came and talked to us before it was done. He said that everthing was going great and that everything looked great. Boy were we relieved. He said that we probably wouldn't have to follow up with him for a month because of how good it looked. Shortly after that Dr. Baker came in and brought pictures and explained how everthing went. He said everything looked good, that he didn't have to balloon anything cause there wasn't any narrowing, and that we didn't need to rush into surgery. He said that he thinks Colin should have it before winter. That way he won't be trying to heal during the flu season.
Every Thurday all Cardiologists and Surgeons get together to discuss cases and he thought that they would go over Colin either this Thursday or the next. So they are not to worried about it needing to be done asap. Which is a huge worry off our shoulders not to be thrown right into it again. But able to know a little bit of a time line to prepare and to enjoy Colin instead of worrying all the time. Now when we asked about the big difference in O2 levels they don't really know. It could be that he fluctuates throughout the day and it could have possibly been the lead placement to check it. Either way we are very happy with the results and happy to be back to normal.
Thanks again for your continued support and prayers for our amazing little man. We will continue to update as we learn more about the timing of Colins next surgury and will update if anything changes. But for now we are just going to try and relax and watch him grow bigger and stronger with each day.
