Christopher’s Story

Site created on October 5, 2008

Christopher was diagnosed with a Wilm's Tumor on April 2, 2008 Stage II, Favorable Histology - This was just before his 4th birthday.  After a short treatment, he had a follow up scan that showed relapse to his liver and a lung.  We were aggressive and he received a BMT completing his transplant April 2009.  He is happy and recovering now!

Christopher was diagnosed with a Wilm's Tumor on April 2, 2008. He had developed a sudden onset of vomiting on March 28, 2008 during a road trip to Las Vegas for his Daddy's birthday. He spent the weekend in the hotel feeling pretty lousy - but nothing too severe. When we returned home on monday he had developed a fever. The fever continued on tuesday and so his mom called the doctor's office. They said if the fever continued on Wednesday to bring him in. The fever broke on Wednesday, but his mommy took him to the doctor anyway. He had a full physical two months prior and not had any issues. However, on this wednesday (April 2, 2008) his MD was able to palpate a mass in his abdomen. He was immediately sent to a local community hospital for an ultrasound. The Radiologist saw a growth and recommended a CT. I (Chris' dad) took him to another hospital where the CT could be performed (as approved by insurance). Unfortunately, they didn't have the ability to do pediatric sedation - so I left there and called Children's Hospital Los Angeles. I was able to arrange an appointment for Christopher for April 4, 2008 at Children's hospital.
Christopher relapsed in September 2008, undertook a more complex chemotherapy regimen and then had a autologous stem cell rescue in April 2009 with radiation therapy in June 2009.  We pray he stays cancer free now.

Journal entry by Scott Evans

Chris spent about a week in the hospital earlier this month.  He had been having some issues urinating - actually he always had some issues since he had wilms.  The bladder wasn’t emptying normally and actually backed up to his remaining kidney.  He had a massive infection.  He was admitted to the hospital and was in kidney failure and was having liver issues as well.  Severe sepsis.  Low blood pressure, anemic, renal insufficiency. Slowly over the week with the right antibiotics he started feeling better.  He did to have a suprapubic catheter put in to evacuate the bladder and all the sludge that was in there.  We still have to go back to the urologist to develop the long term strategy so this doesn’t happen again.  However, last week he was able to return to school.  He’s a freshman at Cal State Fullerton and so that was a bit of normalcy.  This is our picture when I made him take me to the movies last weekend to get out of the house.  Long term affects of all that chemo and radiation I guess…but we have him and other then this little set back…he is doing well.  All his labs returned to normal this week - so that is a relief.
