Christopher’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. It has been created to keep friends and family updated about our loved one.

On February 18, Deputy Christopher Dewey was shot once in the head and once in the abdomen while on duty in Mahnomen County, Minnesota. He was airlifted from the Mahnomen Hospital to MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. He was in intensive care for only five days and was in acute care until March 5th.From there, he was flown by air ambulance to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado. Here he is undergoing intense rehabilitative physical therapy.

Chris has wanted to be a law enforcement officer since early childhood, and has fulfilled his dream by being a deputy for the past four years.Growing up in Isanti, Minnesota as the oldest of 5 boys, he began hunting and fishing at a young age.Playing for the State Championship winning football team in 2001 brought him a great sense of pride and accomplishment. He attended Hibbing Community College for law enforcement, and also enjoyed playing for their football team.

He married his highschool sweetheart, Emily, on March 23rd, 2007.They have no children (yet) and are currently residing in Mahnomen County with their “baby”, a German Shepherd puppy named Oscar.

Chris had surgery to repair a leak in his sinus March 31st.  He began to recover well, and returned to rehab at Craig.  One week after his sinus surgery, he had emergency surgery to repair a "bleed" that had developed.  Shortly thereafter, he had two status seuzures, and another surgery to repair a csf leak.  On June 19th he had a VP shunt placed.  This failed on the 27th and was fixed surgically, but then failed the next day, leading to another surgery on the 28th.  On July 29th Chris had a second shunt placed, and that seems to be functioning well.  Among other complications, Chris has had sepsis and meningitis.

From the day he was shot, God has been with both Chris and Emily, proving what a good and merciful God He is.  Without His presence, Chris would not be where he is today.  Through this experience, Chris and Emily have a new-found faith in the power of prayer.  Chris' sense of humor and incredible strength and determination have also been important factors in his remarkable progress.

Updates on his continuing recovery can be found on this site.
