Chase’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most. Your thoughts and prayers are so appreciated. We have wonderful doctors and nurses here and with God on our team, we are ready to compete in the biggest game of Chase's life!

Game On!

Chase's story began about a week before Thanksgiving when he was complaining that his lips were numb, jaw was sore and teeth hurt, all at just random times, no triggers or anything. So he went to the dentist first for ex-rays, looking for a cavity or abscess. Then he went to the orthodontist. Next we made a stop at the local clinic and thought his sinuses were causing the discomfort. All this in a period of 4 weeks, while he was attending classes at DSU and preparing for finals. When he came home after finals, the local PA took another look at him and found a large mass of lymph nodes on his neck, and a small one on his cheek, and behind his ear. This got the ball rolling with a trip to DeSmet for blood work, a stop at the Brookings ER and here we are at Sanford Children's Hospital diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. (ALL)

Latest Journal Update

Two Year Fight

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Today is December 17th and this post is three fold. This particular post has extra meaning as we reached a milestone. Two years ago, December 14th, is when we started our cancer journey with Chase and as a family. I will never forget that day.  I can still remember the smallest of details of how it all went down. The next few days were a blur as we were trying to figure out why Chase was so ill. On December 18th, 2012, Chase knew he had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia-T-Cell and we were moved to the Castle. His first chemo treatment was administered and all the firsts started for us. Overwhelming.  This is the day he said the two most important words he has ever said, yep you guessed it, "GAME ON"! The game plan was in place and the fight started. The journey was going good until we got into late January/February/March.  Tough days ahead but the fight continued. With love and support from our family and prayer warriors we made it through many days/nights in the IC unit. I know God has a special plan for Chase because he is still with us. I took some time to read over those early journal posts and a tear came to my eyes. A happy tear, not a sad one. Two year fight and going strong. As the journey is really never over, Chase and his cancer treatments continue and will continue until May of 2016. He still takes chemo pills every day, a different chemo pill once a week, has monthly chemo infusions and steroids.  Every 85 days he has a lumbar puncture and we start the cycle all over again.  So our game plan is to continue to follow this maintenance cycle until May of 2016 and keep fighting cancer. Chase is doing great.  Some days are better than others but as long as the cancer stays away we are thankful.  Our oncologists reminds us from time to time that this maintenance cycle is not easy, just easier than the first 3 cycles were. With that in mind we keep a eye on all of Chases appointments, numbers, and paperwork. A daunting task, but doable. Many folks have followed our journey, thank-you! Your little hearts, messages, cards, and just a conversation from time to time have helped us cope with cancer.  We have a long way to go and the road may be rough at times, but we will keep fighting to beat cancer. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.Game On
