Carter’s Story

Carter Franklin is 8 years old and lives in Kanab, Utah with his parents, Rob and Starla, and his older brother , Drake.  He enjoys sports activities and spending time with his family.  Carter attends Kanab Elementary School and is in the 3rd grade.  Carter always treats his classmates with respect and kindness.  His warm grin will always steal the heart of anyone that Carter comes in contact with.

On a Friday of what seemed like any other day of school, Carter began feeling ill and he had a persistent cough.  He phoned his parents and went home sick for the day.  He continued to feel worse in the night and his parents took him to the Kane County Hospital where he was given blood tests and CT Scans and when completed the physician informed Rob and Starla that Carter's white count was extremely low and he would need further treatment at Primary Children's Center in Salt Lake City.
Carter had a tumor growing inside his tummy  and other little tumors in his chest cavity and he was  diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma.  Burkitt's lymphoma is one type of a group of malignant diseases known as the Non-Hodkin's Lymphomas.  These lymphomas are very similar to the leukemias.  The type of malignant cell present is called a B-cell and Burkitt's is often referred to as a B-cell lymphoma.
This malignancy grows very rapidly and a person who appeared in good health a month or 6 weeks ago may now be critically ill. Although that it is a rapid growing cancer it can also be treated just as rapidly. The treatment is intense chemotherapy in order to  reduce the tumor.

On or around Feb. 12th, 2011, Carter began his fight against Burkitt's Lymphoma.
