Well it's been about a week since we put Carter back on the Lantus. A little update on why we had to do so.....After Carter's last endocrine appt. our Dr told us that he needed to be put back on the Lantus very soon based on his numbers. When he started waking up with a blood sugar consitantly over 150 it was time. This was 6months ago. He has had blood sugars well over 150 consistanly and based on the testing that Dr McCauley was doing. We decided not to put him back on it despite "Dr's orders". The Lantus was not testing as a good match or necessary. The reason we have gotten away with it for so long is because we cancled Carter's last endocrine appt in Oct so they are still unaware of his numbers and how much and what type of insulin he's on. Anyways. We have an appt coming up in Jan that we can't miss and due to his numbers I was forced to put him back on the Lantus. I'm not sure what would happen if I told them I wasn't going to do it. Worse case scenario they could call DFS or someone on us for child endangerment or refuse to care for us. It was a rock and a hard place so to keep the peace at the endocrine office we put Carter back on the Lantus and we'll see what happens. With a very small dose...just 1/2unit his AM numbers were reduced significantly and his overall need for insulin went down. I have increased the Lantus to 1unit tonight and that should bring his AM numbers down to a better range along with decreasing his overall need for insulin even more. The danger in this is that he has started having more low blood sugars as this insulin works for 24hrs. It also works over night which makes me nervous...more sleep overs in mom and dad's room:) The thing that makes Carter different in this is that there is healing going on and his pancrease is starting to work more and more which means his insulin need will continue to decrease on it's own but we have no way of knowing other than testing blood sugars. As Carter heads back to school this week my nerves will be tested:) Please pray for safety for Carter and peace for me as we try to find a balance with the insulin. Carter also really doesn't like this new shot. The only difference is that we give it in his leg and I think the dislike is from pain of injection into a sensitive site and lots of bad memories(for all of us). My sweet little boy has come up with an idea to help him not be sad while he gets his shot though. After the first couple nights he cried and just wanted to be held and said he was sad about the shot. About the 4th or 5th night he decided that he would hold his diabetes bear(the JDRF gave him a bear with patches where insulin is given, arms, legs, butt, stomach, and a book about a little boy who gets diagnosed with diabetes)while he gets his shot to help him not be sad. Well, it worked tonight, he did great and held tight to that little bear. Prayer for his continued strength and healing would be a blessing! We go to see Dr McCauley on tues the 9th and we'll see what our next steps are. Thanks to all for your love and support. I look forward to the day I can update and say that God has answered all of our prayers and my little boy is healed!!! Our journey has been long and we still have a long way to go but we hold on to God's love and provision for our family in ALL ways.

Love, Carrie
