We are officially done! As of Tuesday, October 29th, Campbell is no longer on chemo! He took his last dose of Mercaptopurine last night, and tonight will enjoy his first night without medicine in two years! Since the Mercaptopurine has to be taken on an empty stomach, Campbell had to refrain from eating before bedtime. Usually this meant nothing after dinner, while his brothers would often enjoy a late-night snack before bedtime. Tonight, he purposely left his dessert – a chocolate cupcake with pumpkin orange frosting – for after homework, about 8:00pm, so he could savor a “late night” snack once again! Elaine put together an impromptu party last night to celebrate this milestone. Around 40 of our dearest friends joined us at California Pizza Kitchen (Campbell’s choice) for dinner and cheers for Campbell. We are blessed to be part of an amazing community – for the past 2+ years, friends have brought us over 100 dinners, taken one or more of our kids for sleepovers, play dates etc., chauffeured our children all over town, hosted us for weekend getaways and generally bent over backwards to make our lives easier. We’ll never be able to thank them for what they’ve done, but this is a start – THANK YOU! Campbell goes into the clinic Thursday for a checkup / blood test, and will continue to do these periodically over the next 5+ years, but the frequency will get lower and lower over time. Of course, Elaine and I are facing “Off Treatment” as it is known with some trepidation, as the chemo provides some sense of security that the leukemia won’t return. Please keep Campbell in your prayers as he moves into this new, post-leukemia life. We’re confident that he’ll never look back!
