Dear Members of the DeLaSalle Community,

I am writing to you with a health announcement about DeLaSalle High School President, Brother Michael Collins, FSC `55. I’ve been asked to communicate this news after consultation yesterday with Brother Michael, as well as the chair and vice-chair of the DeLaSalle Board of Trustees, Mr. Timothy Keane `69 and Dr. Mark Dienhart `71.

Our daily prayers are with Brother Michael. Late last week, he received a diagnosis that he has cancer. Within 24 hours of receiving that news, he sought and received a corroborating second opinion from one of the top oncologists in the state of Minnesota.

In these past few days following the diagnosis, Brother Michael has begun an inpatient program of treatment (including radiation) and additional testing. As of today, his medical team continues with this program as they attempt first to identify the source of his cancer and then to develop an ongoing treatment plan. They plan to discharge Brother Michael before the week is over and continue treatment on an outpatient basis. I have been with Brother Michael every day, and I wish to assure you that he is receiving excellent care.

We remain a community of hope and faith in God’s will. As snippets of news, both accurate and inaccurate, have leaked out, many have communicated their love and support for Brother Michael. That support will continue to mean a great deal to Brother as he begins his ongoing, outpatient treatment program and as he returns to campus.

Brother Michael’s doctors have requested that there be no “disruptions” to his immediate care program; as such please understand that he should not receive visitors at this time. Your prayers are needed, and your cards and letters are always welcome here at the school.

I have been blessed to work alongside this remarkable man for more than two decades – as have most of the administrative team at DeLaSalle. We, too, are grateful for your ongoing prayers and good wishes. Thank you.

Mr. Barry Lieske, AFSC
Principal
DeLaSalle High School
