My Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most.Wow, where to begin...Drew hasn't been himself for well over a week. Initially doctor's thought it was an underlying viral infection, then a possible ear infection combined with teething. And then this past Wednesday, April 24th, lab work showed low red and white blood counts in addition to platelets, requiring direct admission to Levine Children's Hospital.
Thursday, April 25th. We received confirmation that Drew has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. A rare cancer only affecting less than 200 babies in the US per year. Treatment course is long, 2 years total of chemo and maintenance therapy. We will be here at Levine for the next month for induction chemo, and will be in and out of the hospital over the next 4-5 months. The remaining treatments will hopefully be on an outpatient basis. Although its going to be a long road, there are curable treatment options and we will beat this. We don't need a thing in this world other than your continual prayers that God surround Drew every step of the way.

Happy Easter

Good Easter evening! We sure hope everyone has had a great weekend! We also hope everyone reading this has paused to remember the very reason for this holiday. We all love everything about the holiday ... spring, pretty flowers, prepping for fun easter baskets for our little ones, dying eggs, visiting the easter bunny ... but it's so much more than that. It's a celebration of how Jesus sacrificed his life for us. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.

We've both had a strong faith all our life, but admittedly, it has been shaken by the events, fear and challenges of this past year. I honestly and admittedly questioned so much after Drew was first diagnosed with Leukemia ... why us, why Drew? Why would God allow such an innocent angel to face this thing called cancer? We were heart broken and just could not grasp the whys and hows of Drew's diagnosis. But through much prayer and continued faith, we have seen and felt the presence of God all around us in so many ways ... the outpouring of support, the compassion and love from the nurses and doctors on Drew's team, the strength, peace, comfort and patience the Lord has provided us during difficult times. We've learned so many things throughout this year, but have most certainly been reminded that when we face pain and suffering, how we respond to it is a choice. If we seek God, he is faithful and will provide.

Drew is in recovery from our last round of high dose Ara-C over a week ago meaning all of his counts are at a significant low. As expected, Drew required platelet and blood transfusions before the weekend. If all goes as planned, his counts will start to pop up mid week. Our prayer is that he continues to remain fever free. As you know, any fever buys us an automatic admission to good 'ol Levine children's hospital. As much as we'd love to see and catch up with all our favorite nurses, we'd much rather do that as a visitor rather than a patient!
