Ava Biel's Journal
appointments, fundraiser, and so much more
Written Jan 31, 2014 3:02pm by Cayla KlumbLast week Ava had a GI appointment. She weighed in at 20 lbs 7.5 oz's and is 29 3/4" long! They are happy with her growth but because she is over a year now we just switched her from formula to pediasure for her g-tube feedings. We also went down from 4 feeds a day to 3 feeds a day in hopes she will feel more hungry and want to eat orally more. She was taking about 2 tablespoons of rice cereal or a half of jar of baby food twice a day and then we tried to push her to take more, and more often and we took a step back. So we are working on her eating better orally (through her mouth) again.
She was just at her cardiology appointment yesterday. Everything sounded good, they as well were happy with her growth and how she looked. We have to go back in 4 months for a sedated echo and make sure her arteries are growing along with her. She also may need to go back to the catheterization in about 7 months before she has her next heart surgeries.
So far so good with her staying healthy (knock on wood)
February 18th we go back to Children's for a developmental clinic to see how Ava is developing and what we need to work on more. So far she is still not walking, talking or crawling but she has started to sit up and she knows how to sign a few words and babbles like crazy!
Dont forget that February 8th is Ava's Fundraiser at King Pin Bowl in West Bend! We will have bowling available, TONS of raffle items, and baked sale goodies! We also have t-shirts and stickers for sale. The fundraiser is from 11am-4pm so make sure to stop out! If you have pop tops from cans of soda, beer, energy drinks make sure to bring them along as we are collecting them for the Ronald McDonald House!
We hope everyone is staying warm in this bitter cold winter we are having and we look forward to seeing you one week from tomorrow!
Officially 1 year old!
Written Jan 6, 2014 4:22pm by Cayla KlumbI cannot believe it! One year has gone by and in a couple days will be 1 year since Ava's first open heart surgery. So much has happened in this first year and we are just so thankful and beyond grateful for everything everyone has done for us.
Ava had a great birthday! She did not gag on the cake but did not care for it. She got lots of great gifts and our house was filled with a ton of love!
She is now rolling over and she is starting to sit up on her own. she doesn't last long sitting up before falling over but we are getting there. She now eats rice cereal and we are also introducing other baby food flavors to her. We are working on her drinking from a sippy cup and she is getting pretty good at it! hopefully in the next 6 months to a year we can get rid of the feeding tube. That is the goal anyways!
On February 8th we will be having Ava's fundraiser at Kingpin Bowl from 11am-4pm in West Bend. She also has her 1 year check up this wednesday and her cardiology appointment on February 18th.
I hope all of you had a very happy and blessed holiday season as we did! getting to celebrate all holidays and Ava's birthday with her makes us beyond happy. I will try and update more often but its hard with this little busy girl, planning a fundraiser and planning a wedding!
Stay warm and safe everyone!
Things are looking up!
Written Nov 25, 2013 2:48pm by Cayla KlumbHello Everyone!
I just wanted to take a minute to update those who may not have Facebook. We are currently planning on having a fundraiser for Ava on February 8th at Kingpin Bowl in West Bend. There are 2 shifts of bowling available- 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm. You may come even if not bowling. We will have raffles, bakes sale, and it will be fun to watch those who haven't bowled in some time! We also have t-shirts for sale right now for $15.00 a piece. In the first shipment we only ordered 45 shirts so if you would like one please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to do so. We have sizes small-2XL. I have attached a picture of what the shirts will look like. I will also post the flyer for Ava's fundraiser in the photos area. If you need a different size we can place your order with the next shipment. All checks can be made out to Ava Biel or Cayla Klumb. Money can be mailed to

UPDATE ON AVA: Ava is making great progress. She has started to take some rice cereal without gagging or puking for about a week now. We have only tried about a teaspoon- tablespoon amount but she is doing great with it! We are going to start to introduce other baby foods like fruits and veggies hopefully next week!
Ava is also extremely close to being able to sit up on her own! She is a little wobbly and it does not last long but she is so close. She knows how to roll over to her tummy but chooses not too. She loves actually being on her belly just not the rolling to get there. Ava is now working with her therapists on putting more weight on her arms to hold herself up when on her belly to help her get into that crawling position. She also has learned how to shake her head No, and continues to love to do pat-a-cake, peek-a-boo and how big is Ava. She is progressing so well these days!
We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving as we are beyond thankful this year for Ava to be here with us, and for all of you in our lives and all the support we have from you. We cannot thank everyone enough! Safe travels and Happy Thanksgiving!
