Amber Wilkins's Journal
Written Feb 9, 2014 11:50amWhenever I have the opportunity to tell people about Amber, I tell them her comprehension has become excellent, her memory is almost as good... the aftermath seems mostly to be physical at this point and I always add..."We are so thankful these three things are not the other way around." Amen and thank God for this miracle! The first two allow her to enjoy the precious things in life and that includes her son, which frankly, God used and still uses as her inspiration. Even the physical for her has some areas without bounds, as she manages fine in many ways.
Bailey continues to grow. We are amazed by his wit, which is well beyond his years. Often, Shelly and/or Amber will look at me after he says something and will inconspicuously drop our jaws or roll our eyes. He's destined for something special, as if the Lord hasn't done that with him already.
Ryan and Jenny are approaching their 2nd anniversary and we love watching how thoughtful they are towards each other. They enjoy all the things you might hope to see in your kids - they walk with the Lord, spend much time together, are excited to travel, shop and decorate their home together, and are excelling in their careers, etc. They are an absolute blessing to us.
Shelly... remains an awesome wife and my very, very dear friend. On Friday, for my LVI birthday (I had trouble saying it so I thought I would test your skill in Roman numerals) she planned a great day for me - so incredibly thoughtful.
RealerthanReal continues to circulate with the book doing well in the Midwest and on the east coast, but Ryan also recently booked a speaking engagement in California and another in the Midwest. And according to CaringBridge data, more people are registering to this site the past 2-3 months. Welcome to all, as I presume this is due to increased book circulation. Today the book jumped over 6,000 "Likes' on Facebook!
Finally, it seems I never update you on my dear sister-in-law, Kelly, who is also Shelly's twin. Kelly was so instrumental in the days after Amber's accident when neither Amber or Shelly, nor I for that matter, could be with the little guy as he wondered what happened to his mommy. Well, this summer, Kelly and her husband, Joe, moved into a cute 1.5 story home in the Harvey Oaks area of Omaha - their first move in over 20 years. Kelly remains precious to all of us, and is still very much that way to Bailey.
On Her Own
Written Jan 14, 2014 10:17pmThis past week represented another milestone for this family - Shelly and I, for the first time in roughly four years - left town alone for San Francisco and the Napa Valley. Yes, this means Amber is at the point she was able to be on her own, too, a bit. Through an ample offering of transportation and camaraderie from friends and family who stopped by to see her and take her where she needed to be, we took off for some time together.
Folks, this is a really big deal for many reasons. The thought that we can do this again down the road means a lot not only to us, but to Amber's growing confidence. What small trepidation she had when we left last week was gone by the time we got home. It's God's work, for sure, and another sign of answered prayer in Amber's recovery.
Tonight I also wanted to show you a YouTube clip from the organizers of Amber's Waves of Inspiration, a unique art collection forming now in North Carolina to impact the lives of single mothers every year. The inaugural fundraiser will be in Amber's honor this March albeit the event will always be called 'Amber Waves of Inspiration.' Here is the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3B-MwPwXhA . We are touched by the concept and all of the work going into the event.
Happy Birthday Amber Renee!
Written Jan 3, 2014 5:53amOur little girl, our young lady, is 29 today. She is thankful and considers her life a living testament to the glory of God. She knows this as well as anyone and her appreciation is great.
Amber is a mother totally in love with her son and he feels the same for his Mom. He recently told his other grandma that one of his favorite times is eating breakfast with his Mommy in their kitchen. Not playing video games, not watching a movie and not doing superhero things or playing with Skylanders... it was hanging out with Mom. Amber melted.
So, if you have the time to bless Amber with birthday cheer today, I know it would make her day. Thank you already - so very much - for caring about her as you have along the way.
