Amber Wilkins's Journal
Written Dec 15, 2013 5:36pm
I would like to address something in RealerthanReal I have been asked about from time to time. Many of you have heard of Amber’s account that while she was in the helicopter and totally comatose after the accident, she saw Kayla enter and stand beside her. She says Kayla leaned over, cried and kissed her on the nose, telling her to fight and said everything would be okay. You would have had to be there the moment Amber could first talk about this to see her eyes and her passion, but every single detail has remained unchanged since then.
Some friends have wondered about this and I understand their questions. First, let me tell you this family does not believe in anything that isn’t found in God’s true Word, found in the bible which was written by men moved by the Holy Spirit, with words spoken by God Himself [2 Peter 1:21].
You know, while the body may go into a coma, I believe the spirit never does. It lives and lives and will live into eternity. And in Hebrews 1:14 God tells us “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” Could it really be so incredible that our loving Lord Jesus would send an angel in the form of a ministering spirit, and in His loving way, make it to look like Kayla in order to minister to Amber’s troubled spirit that day? Isn’t it like Him to do that? If Hebrews 1:14 says he sends them, wouldn’t that imply the ministering spirit was not there beforehand?
One of my favorite bible commentaries says angels have four purposes; one, to serve believers [Heb 1:14]; two, protect the helpless [Mat 18:10]; three, proclaim God's message [Rev 14:6-12] (among others); and four, execute God's judgement [Acts 12:1-23, Rev 20:1-3]. I'm sure everyone has heard the saying "an angel watching over me" or someone had an angle watching over them. Well, Hebrews 1:14 is where it comes from. In Acts 12, an angel came and dropped the chains from Peter and told him to follow the angel out of jail, and in Acts 12:9 it says Peter "...did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision."
When considering the original concept of what later became RealerthanReal, we had a Christian-based publishing company get caught up with this part, saying their theologians on staff wanted to ask me about it. When I explained what I consider to be strong biblical ground, they were comfortable with it and re-continued seeking rights to the book. However, they still wanted to tweak this and that, so it was shortly after these conversations when I turned to Ryan, knowing already his God-given gift for writing. Of course, once the book was written he ended up going a different route and self-published it.
I'm glad for these questions and would gladly entertain others. I count it a privilege to talk about the love of God, which is something that stands out to me more than anything else in life.
Written Dec 5, 2013 10:56pmIt wonderful to see how God works in our lives, and how He uses circumstances to speak to us; to draw us. After Micah interviewed Ryan at Christ Community last Sunday, Shelly followed in the Traditions service by singing Laura Story's 'Blessings.' A great excerpt from that song is:
'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You're near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?'
Ever since the inception of this site, people have blessed us with their own stories of hope, healing and grace, telling us how they have been brought to faith in Jesus, or maybe have come back to Him after an absence for one reason or another. These testimonies have also come through Facebook and more recently, the RealerthanRealBook.com website, privately, by using the 'Fellowship' tab. Here is a recent one from a lady with Omaha roots, now living in Michigan. This is someone I don't think I've seen in 30 years::
She comes from a family that we certainly have looked up to over the years, both spiritually and otherwise. So, you can see that 'trials in life' really could be His mercies in disguise. Hold your trust in Him, for He is faithful and will keep looking for you.
I haven't been able to put my copy of RealerthanReal down yet. I keep stealing time in the kitchen, working out, and even during breaks from work to grab a few more sentences.
I'm only on chapter 5 (so I guess I read sloooooooooow) and I've bawled every step of the way. This morning when I read Isaiah 43:1-7 - the timing couldn't have been more perfect from where I sit today.
It was through your CaringBridge entries, and those of Ryan and Shelly, that spoke to my heart as I returned to my faith in 2010. I remember several times the Lord inspiring you all with the right word to pierce my very cold heart during that time. Amber's accident played an important role in my coming back to the Lord. I was far from him before that time.
I have started (2 weeks ago) a women's study group in my home and we are reading/studying RealerthanReal together. Those of us who sit in that room have a varied past - and are allowing God to restore our hearts. The book has been perfect for us.
I'll write something more on the RealerthanReal site later, but wanted to take a minute to tell you and Shelly personally how thankful I am that you've allowed your story to be shared.
I'm so sorry for the pain through the years. My heart broke for you both - having had no idea what you faced early in your marriage. It could not have been easy to share. I rejoice with you in the hope you share through the story. You've got quite a wonderful son - who is very gifted!
Please tell Shelly I said hello. I will continue to pray for you all and support your family through this ongoing journey.
Thanks, fond memories, and hugs to you both!
We love to hear stories of how God is working in your lives, whether we've ever met or not.
