My Story

Hi, thank you for checking up on me. I am Alexander, born on July 13 2006 at 33 weeks and 6 days. I weighed 4lbs and 1/2 oz 17 inches long! I was lucky to be SO big for a preemie. Luckily, Mommy and Daddy kind of knew about my anomalies before I was born http://www.kodakgallery.com/Slideshow.jsp?mode=fromshare&Uc=6z3df3b.xqbzlgj&Uy=-fjlwil&Ux=1

Dr. Rivera called late Friday afternoon so at least my mind was put at ease not to have to wait over the weekend!  His Brain MRI looked beautiful with absolutely no signs of anything, so we will take that and love it in its fullest!  I don't think the chest cat scan really told us anything we didn't already know, but it did help confirm so thoughts as well as give us an idea of how to help his lungs.  He still is showing atelectasis in the lower lobes of his lungs and I believe (but don't quote me) she said also on the upper left side.  His left has always been his worst side and usually sounds slightly diminished.  This means he has parts of his lungs that do not fully expand and have a little collapse.  She said she believes he does have Chronic Lung Disease, but he is not old enough for a pulmonary function test, so for now we just treat as well we can.  We are going to try building the IPV treatments back up to four a day, he continues his flovent, and then if we absolutely have to maybe put him on a medication that decreases his saliva, which we hope not to get to since it does come with its other side effects.

She believes that he is aspirating even if it is on his own mucus, which for us made us slightly happy to hear someone else validate what we thought all along:P  Right now he can continue his tasting, but if he were to get to a point of eating by mouth we would have to re-evaluate that idea.  The good news is that she believes his lungs have always worked very hard for himself and could go through a kidney transplant.  ~insert huge sigh of relief!  However, this doesn't mean it cannot get worse over time, in which case if it did it could possibly prevent the transplant.  Her ideal recommendation is why aren't we on the list yet to get a move on, of course I can't predict the future, but I don't mind this thinking at all!  She anticipates this extensive of a procedure would be a long recovery for him, but if his lungs get potentially worse then the repercussions are severe!  Hopefully over the next month we will have more talks with renal and hear what their exact intentions are as well.

I must be off to a fun filled day of therapies for the little man, please continue to pray for our little Eithene and that her answers are right around the corner!

Love,
Alexander's Mom
