My Story

My name is Aaron David Phelps. I was born on 1-24-2008. I was so healthy that they let Mommy and me go home within 36 hours.

When I had my 2 month checkup, my doctor thought I was a bit floppy. Two months later I was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Here is my story.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY SWEET LITTLE BOY!!

To my dearest Aaron,

Happy Birthday! I can't believe that you are already 1 year old! It seems like just yesterday that you were in my tummy, getting all ready to make your grand appearance 3 weeks before your due date. You sure surprised Mommy and Daddy last January. You continue to amaze us today.

You are such a strong, brave little boy. Even when we are doing a breathing treatment with that CoughAssist machine (which is like a lung vacuum), you keep smiling. That is more than Mommy and Daddy would do. You perk right up after all of your shots, and barely cry when the doctors take your blood. You adapt to anything we ask of you, and always try your best during your physical therapy sessions. We know those rolls are tough, but keep working to get stronger, and you will!

Your wonderful loving spirit, smiles, and giggles make my heart melt. I love how excited you get when we are about to read a book, how your eyes light up when you see a big balloon, and how you scream with excitement when you see your bear after Mommy does your breathing treatments. Each day I look forward to the time when you wake up in the morning so we can start our day together.

Thank you for being The Best Little Boy In The World! My Aaron - no longer a little baby, but my little boy. Have the happiest of birthdays, and the greatest year ever!

Love,

Mommy
