Hi Sara,
I have Tessa's page on my favorite list, so every so often I check in. I am THRILLED to hear that she will get the 2nd CI. Sounds like she is making wonderful progress all around. I'll keep myself posted - and I'm sure Tessa will do well with the procedure.
On a positive note for me, I opened my own practice in Culpeper - no more commuting!! It's very rewarding.

Hi, Sara--
I'm from the sensory board on Babycenter. You'd sent me Tessa's Caringbridge link quite some time ago, and I am just now posting! I am so thrilled to read about Tessa's playmate. It makes all the difference in the world for our kids to have peers that they are comfortable with. My son, Miles, started school this year and I finally feel he has kids he can relate to as well--it has made all the difference in his speech and play skills.
Best of luck with the surgery later this month. I will keep all of you in my thoughts, in hopes that you are all healthy this month!
Be well,

Hi I just wanted to say what a great story. I enjoyed reading about your daughter. I have a 12 month old son named Caden. He was diagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss bilaterally when he was eight months old. We had a sedated ABR to confirm the diagnosis. at ten months old he received his first pair of hearing aides. They say he would be a perfect canidate for the implant but I really wasn't sure. I would love to talk to you about this.

I just read the entry before last (Late Nov.) - I had missed that one. As I read your thoughts about God's plans for Tessa, I had two thoughts. The first was in empathy with your 'quandry.' It can be hard to understand why a child has to struggle with being different. The second was a very persistent thought: Does Sarah realize that part of the plan involves her? I see a lot of growth in you as a person and as a parent as a result of being challenged with a real 'disability'. I heard someone (perhaps even you!) explain that a 'disability' is really a "different ability.' Tessa certainly exhibits a lot of abilities...!

Brings tears to my eyes ... what a tremendous blessing children are! And yes, it is so refreshing to hear what children really feel & think, but too often we miss that.

It really is encouraging to take a look back in order to see all the progress!

I applaud you & Stephen for taking the time to discuss what you want to teach your girls, and how to go about it. Too many parents just let life "happen" ... then wonder why their kids don't share their values when they get older. KUDOS!

So glad to see the update - and look forward to new pictures SOON! :-)
Also excited about Tessa's progress...and look forward to seeing all of you in just a couple months!
Keep working on that self-discipline thing - it'a a never-ending battle - it's natural to be drawn to something we enjoy doing and put off what we don't enjoy.

It is SO nice to have an explanation for things that otherwise seem inexplicable! Maybe the potty training fits into the spacial thing, too, as there are a lot of physical movements & coordination with another object (the stool) involved. Glad to hear that she's getting the PT started. So much to do & so little time!

RE the bus driver. Sounds like she is not innately equipped to deal with special needs kids and, moreover, has not had any training to help her. You were right to speak up & work with the other parents. Thankfully, kids are remarkably resilient. Most seem to be able to deal with occasional abberant behavior without undue duress. Good luck on the remodel & keeping a toddler out of harm's way!

I never gave up & kept looking figuring someday you'd have a chance to come up for air and give us an update! Good to hear that things are going well for you. Good luck on the house hunt; I prefer the older houses with character, too. Even though you might start out with a bit of work to do, sooner or later (depending on its construction) a new house needs work too!

Hi Sara & Stephen,

The girls are beautiful; I am amazed at how grown up Tessa is. It's been quite some time since I've seen you all, but fortunately for me, I have Tessa's page bookmarked and try to check in and see what yall are up to. I've read about your frustrations with the educational system and certainly appreciate your concerns. I've always thought, Sara, that Tessa is so lucky to have parents such as you and Stephen (I'm sure the feeling is mutual). My best wishes and regards are with you all as you prepare to make your next move (physically, emotionally).

When you're feeling like they're not hearing you, keep at it. Part of the story has already been articulated here, but another part is the necessity for parental commitment. Some parents SAY they want the best for their kids, but they want someone else to do it. Stick to your guns & don't let them procrastinate. Sooner or later, they will figure out that you two are not going to give up or give in & it will be easier. Tessa needs language development NOW, not when their budget gets bigger. You are being very responsible & reasonable, but don't overdo that part: it's in everyone's interest, including society's, that Tessa get good language training now while her brain is still forming so rapidly. Stay reasonable & constant in your demands - it will become very hard for them to avoid meeting Tessa's needs. :>)

You guys are doing well - keep at it! Doesn't matter what your kids are like, you'll have trials :>)
P.S. Both girls are just adorable!

I've listened to a friend talk about her struggle in getting her disabled son's needs met educationally. Your discussion really reminded me of her tales. She talked about how important it was to go to bat for her son. It is a difficult line to walk with being responsible with public $ and to meet the needs of disabled students. Hence the struggle you are in. I wish Tessa the best. I personally don't believe that God controls everything in this world. This world is imperfect, there are always problems, God helps us to walk through all that is thrown our way. God is love, above all, and that gives us strength to help us to handle all that we need to deal with.

It is frustrating dealing with the school. To some extent I understand their dilemma: they probably (by which I mean certainly) don't have enough budget to meet even all of the requirements of the law. On the other hand, we have been more than reasonable and willing to work with the school, even paying out of pocket to get her what she needs. Really, all they're asking is that they do what they can to help give her that (the least restrictive environment), but it feels like they've deceived us.

We're also struggling to give Tessa enough challenges: it's hard sometimes because we often underestimate what she is capable of, and what she's understanding. And of course there's the financial struggles, but who doesn't have those? :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone! It's good to read your comments.

Sara, These trials will "grow" you as well as Tessa. Keep the faith :-) Stay calm, focused, patient, yet firm in pushing for what is best for Tessa - no one knows better than you what she needs. Stick with it. I've been to those IEP meetings - yuck - but I have every confidence in your ability to handle it.

Hey girl, you have a house full of angels! Steven is a lucky guy. I am glad to year all of you are doing so well. Can you believe freshmen are on campus. I remember a few years ago when you were helping me and were just pregnant with Tessa, man time goes by so fast.

I have no doubt that Tessa will catch up and pass most kids her age in due time. You and Steven are so smart, the poor girl inherited all those brains.

God could not have given her better parents. Keep up the great work! Love you.

Nice to hear that she's doing well. I got to hear her make her entrance at Stafford the other day when I was on the phone with Janice. Sounds like she's learning that sound is important and that she can contribute :>)

My wife sure does find the cutest pics to put on here! I realized yesterday when I returned home after a week in Europe that I no longer think of Tessa as having "something wrong with her". Instead of trying to fit her into what I want for her, I realized I am beginning to accept who she is and how much God loves her. It's good to make progress, and just be patient as He works His awesome will in our lives. Thanks everybody for signing the GB...keep posting, and we'll keep updating!!!

This is such a great site! It's exciting to find out that your child knows stuff that you didn't teach her. What smart little humans they are. I had a lot of fun learning signs to talk to Tessa, I'm thinking I should keep going with it and teach Rosemary too. Phoebe

It's really nice to be able to log in and see what's new. I'm not surprised that she appears to be very bright -- you know the old saying, "the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree" : >) She'll end up challenging all of us hearing folk who don't know sign language: she'll most likely learn faster than we will!

Sara, Thanks for your diligence in keeping us informed and up to date on Tessa’s progress. It sure brings joy and smiles to hear about the strides she’s making. Make God keep watching over you all. I believe that many people are being blessed by the work that God is doing here. Thank you for allowing God to use you and Stephen. Love, Dad

WOW, has Tessa grown! A long way from sitting in her baby seat on the dining table in gel group! She is a beautiful young girl. Thank you for all the news. It will be awesome to look back & see how our Father works His wonders. He is the ultimate Healer & His name will be glorified as we pray together for Tessa & our prayers will be answered.
God's Greatest Thursday/Wednesday nights gel group misses you all very much. We love you

Hi There,

Caring Bridge is such a great resource. It's nice to see pictures of Tessa, I've heard so much about you guys through my Dad, John Urban. Good luck on this journey and know that we're sending our love your way.

Waiting is tough. Corin had ear tubes put in when she was around 2 ... I remember how she flailed when she came out of the anesthesia. I almost lost control of her & barely kept her off the floor! Those young 'uns can be pretty strong!

This is a great site! I'm glad you are keeping everyone informed. I bought some materials on American Sign Language several years ago, but just haven't taken the time to study them. This will be another incentive for me to learn. Landon has some hearing loss, apparently it is hereditary. He is the 4th generation in his fathers side with it. I will keep Tessa and you guys in my prayers. Even though she cannot understand verbal language, it is very evident that you have been teaching her the most important language - the language of God's love! Hope to see yall when you're down this way. Everyone in the Gel Group misses you guys. Love, Becky
