Super Matthew

Matthew was diagosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (T-cell) with CNS (Central nervous system) disease on Thanksgiving day, November 27th 2003.
Matthew has received numerous rounds of chemotherapy and also had 10 cranial radiation treatments. We thank God every day for how well Matthew is doing.
Matthew and Emma are siblings and the best of friends
Psalm 41:3 says that "The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed and restore him from his bed of illness"
Matthew has been in remission since January 5th 2004 and is continuing his treatment.
"O Lord my God, I called to you for help and you healed me"Psalm 30:2
We know that Matthew will be completely healed and made whole in the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior.

Here are my pals: AngelChassity, Cedric, David, Parker, Ben, and Angel Ryan.

THE CHOSEN MOTHERS by Erma Bombeck
Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures, and a couple by habit. Did you ever wonder how mothers of children with life threatening illnesses are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting His instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger. "Armstrong, Beth, son, patron saint Matthew. Forrest, Marjorie, daughter, patron saint Cecilia. Rutledge, Carrie, twins, patron saint Gerard."
Finally, He passes a name to an angel and says, "Give her a child with cancer." The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."
"Exactly" smiles God, "Could I give a child with cancer a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."
"But, does she have patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she will handle it."
"I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has it's own world. She has to make it live in her world an that's not going to be easy."
"But, Lord, I don't think she believes in you." No matter, I can fix that.
This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness." The angel gasps -"Selfishness? is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied.
She will never take anything her child does for granted. She will never consider a single step ordinary. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see... ignorance, cruelty, prejudice... and allow her to rise above them."
She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing My work as surely as if she is here by My side."
"And what about her patron Saint?" asks the angel. His pen poised in mid-air. God smiles,
"A mirror will suffice."

The Light the Night Walk on October 22, 2005 at Hurkamp Park in Fredericksburg,Virginia, was a great fundraising event. Team Matthew raised over $2,200. Thank you to all the friends and family who came out to walk that night and to all of the "virtual walkers" who donated money to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Matthew.

Journal
Saturday, February 3, 2007 2:11 PM CST This is a short update. Sorry it's been so long since I updated. Things have been going great here. Matthew has been off treatment for over a year. Praise God for his healing!!!!!! We did some fun stuff this year. We went to visit family in NJ 3 times this year. Matthew went to summer daycamp for 2weeks and had a blast. We went to the beach courtsey of Believe in Tomorrow, and also to Wisp Mountain where we got to go do a "Day Out With Thomas" finally.
Some more exciting news for our family is that I will be having a baby in the begining of July. So, we are getting ready for the arrival of the new addition.
Also, I started a business. I'm selling Mary Kay, I never thought I would be saying that. But after trying the skincare line, I was hooked. I always thought it was just about pink cadilacs. Boy was I wrong. I have a website if you would like purchase any awesome Mary Kay products. My Mary Kay Website, Emma is doing great in 2nd grade and Matthew is giving his teacher a run for her money in Kindergarten. Just this week we found out that Matthew had PNEUMONIA.!!!!!!!!! Can you believe it. There were no symptoms that I would link to that. He started with a fever on Wednesday morning that went up to around 102.5 and had a little runny nose. I took him to his pediatrician on Thursday monrning and she ran tests for Mono, strept throat, and the flu. His lungs sounded fine, but she ordered a chest xray just incase. Wow, we were so surprised. He had to get a shot of anitbiotics in each leg, poor guy. But boy did that do the trick. He felt so much better later that night. Now he's just on antibiotics for 10 more days.
Oh, and by the way, he set the microwave on fire today.
He told emma he was hungry and asked her to heat up his happy meal from yesterday. She put the paper happy meal bag in the mic for 1min. At that point Matthew tasted it and decided to cook it longer. Now, neither one of them are allowed to operate the microwave, and I was upstairs for only 5 min. When I asked matthew what happened he said " I put in on for 100 min, mom". When I heard emma screaming that there was smoke comming out of the microwave, I ran downstairs to see flames inside of it. So, it now sits outside on our front porch. Well, that is that. love, Katie
