Amanda w/ new car June 2004
Welcome to Amanda Barrington's Web Page. Amanda was initially diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) subtype M2 in November 2001 at age 17. She spent 115 days in the Portsmouth Naval Hospital PICU in Virginia due to various complications from her disease. She was in remission for 18 months before she relapsed in July of 2003. Josh, her brother, was a perfect match donor for Amanda. She had the Bone Marrow Transplant at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, TX on August 22, 2003. Amanda made it back to Virginia January 5, 2004. She started working as a hostess for a local restaurant in April, bought her Mazda dream car, and enrolled for the fall college semester. By mid-May, she developed Graft vs. Host Disease in her liver. By mid-July, Amanda had trouble breathing and was admitted to the PICU. They thought the gvhd was in her lungs too. She was on tremendous amounts of steroids and immune suppressants that put her at a greater risk for infections. Sadly, she passed away August 23, 2004 from septic shock without ever getting to go back home. Later it was revealed that she also had fungal growth throughout her body.
May we spend this year in honor of Amanda’s memory living by her example.
