Hi Melody,
Just wanted to sign in and say hi in case I haven't introduced myself before. Your boys are adorable! Also--how exciting you have another one on the way. I have mito and am 29 yrs old but want to be a mom more than anything. We just underwent in vitro to freeze our embryos so another woman can carry our baby for us. Hopefully one day we can have this dream come true for us.....your new little one on the way made me think of my own situation! :)

I'll be praying for your whole family!

I'm so happy to hear that you have finally found a doc that takes your concerns seriously, I know how important that is! It was interesting to read about the muscle biopsy thing, it also made me worry cuz Emmy's at 7 weeks showed mito. Maybe your neuro will find out that your boys have something else too and can have my kids tested as well!
I would tell you about the urine in the sun thing but would hate to wreck all your fun!

Hi, my name is Christina and I am mom to my quadriplegic infantile cp baby girl Norah. I was looking on the internet for floppy airway and I chose to read about your two boys. Thank you for sharing your experiences. My daughter Norah has not been sleeping well either-she had a setback on Jan. 31,2007. Since then she has her sleep cycles backwards sleeping in the day and up all night. Her new neurologist today was the second meeting prescribed Topamax and one of the side effects is drowsiness. A week ago she slept sat./sun./Mon./ at night she feel sleep around 130am-10am I was so thrilled for her and me too. Some nites she falls asleep around 3am. like last night. Norah is still up and it is 230an, on the west coast and I listen to her from the baby monitor. I know how it feels not to get sleep.Anyway I am going to continue on the internet to look up my daughters diagnosis just to find out more.

Right now... Barrington, IL USA - Wednesday, June 13, 2007 11:42 AM CDT
It sounds like you had a good as can be expected appt :) I am so thrilled that the doctor thinks your boys only have mild cases of mito. I know several adults with mild cases and they are doing quite well. If you have any questions I'll do my best to answer them for you!
All of us will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers! Praying for a safe and quick flight home.
Please update on Rudy when you have the chance, my kids are driving me crazy with questions on how he is doing etc. Liam said yesterday, when Rudy gets to heaven won't all the kids be happy to get a new dog to play, I wonder if he'll get woodticks in heaven or if there aren't any there.
Take care!

Margo <margoc@brainerd.net>
Pierz, MN - Tuesday, June 12, 2007 6:34 AM CDT
Uh oh, twists what we refer to as Corey's quirks and now Emmy's quirks :) Finally a doctor that takes your concerns seriously! Mito is it primary or not, hmmmm sounds like they are talking about my kids as well.
I hope that you see results with the coq10 and carnitor. I feel bad for Nathan not having a g-tube as the coq10 when I tasted it leaves a peppery taste in your mouth for a long time. Make sure you ask for riboflavin to help combat the dead fish smell you get from the carnitor! Some docs forget to mention it until you mention the awful smell your kids have!
Praying that the rest of your appts keep on being so promising, quick and simple blooddraws too!

Margo <margoc@brainerd.net>

Sending you a ton of prayers! Hopefully you are all safely in Cleveland by now. Praying that you receive some much needed answers and by the time you get home finally have found the medical help that you need and deserve.
All of you are in my thoughts and prayers, including Rudy. Liam and Evan thought it was cool to get to pray for someone else's dog. They used their allowance to light a candle for Rudy at church!Until you are safely home a candle is lit for all of you, someone will be praying for you 24/7.
Take care and will be waiting anxiously for an update!

Doug and Melody,
I am sitting here trying to find the words to let you know how much I care. Please know that I am praying for all of you. I know how much strength and courage you will need to have for your upcoming appts. It will be the hardest time of your lives but I am hoping that while it won't be what you want to hear it will lead to the best possible choices for Nicholas and Nathan. While our kids are affected in different ways we share so much in common that only one mito parent to another can understand.
I hope that both boys are feeling better today. Know that you are always in our thoughts and prayers!

Melody,
The Easter pics were adorable-thanks for sharing! I read your message on Joshie's site- no, the Peptamen wasn't a big success for us- we switched him back to the Elecare after it became clear that he couldnt tolerate it. On the other hand, though, we have a surplus of Peptamen. I've been pretty overwhelmed with everything lately- Anthony just went back overseas after a 30 day leave and Joshie's disease is rearing its ugly head again- so I havent updated his site in a while. I will try to do that soon. I'm glad that your Easter went well and I hope everything is calm and peaceful.

Melody,
Okay where do you have all the medical supplies hiding? There new room is sooooo cute! Corey and Emmy's room looks like a hospital for amidst the princess theme for Emmy's side and the traffic theme for Corey's it looks like a child's hospital room.
I notice that we both use the same neb's too, I recognized the fish masks but your boys have to be the most cooperative ones I have ever seen. Corey is scared of the noise and I have to hold him down and all Emmy has to see is the mask and is sent in hysterics!
I sure enjoyed the new pics and they have made my entire day!
As for surgery and mito protocol we can only use one doc for the anethesia, others just will not listen! Glad that things went so well!

Hello . We are new to the P2P group and saw your link . I LOVE the Blues Clues theme. My daughter's love Blues Clues too .
My daughter Maggie was born on August 8, 2006 with VACTERL Association and has quite a few health problems right now . So I am glad to find this Parent 2 Parent group.
I was interested in reading about Mitochondria disorders. There has been talk on wether the medical community may think VACTERL/VATER is a mitochondrial disorder. But as of right now they really don't know or understand how VATER/VACTERL occurs.
Your boys are just two little dolls .

Jelly beans & Jesus

Have you heard the story of the jelly beans?

Little jelly beans
Tell a story true.
A tale of our Father's love
That's just for me and you.

GREEN is for the new spring grass.
YELLOW is for the sun above.
BROWN is for the soft earth where
People sat hearing of HIS love.

PURPLE'S for the robe he wore
RED is for that precious wine.
BLACK is for the sins He washed
From your soul and mine.

BLUE'S for the sadness of
HIS friends and family,
and is for the glory of the Day
HE rose for you and me.

Now that you've heard the story
You know what each color means.
The story of our Father's love
As told by jelly beans.
So when you see jelly beans on this Easter season,
stop and remember,
Jesus is the reason!

"For God so loved the world, He gave His One and Only Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

John 3:16

Praying for you,

Alyssa had 4 sets of pe tubes and finally when she was 2 1/2 they put in t-tubes, they lasted until she was 13 and have left permanent holes so no more tubes! Hope they work as well for Nathan!

Melody,
I have spent the last two days trying to sign this guestbook-my computer would just shut down everytime I tried!
I love the Blue Clues but it also made me a little sad as I remember how crazy Evan used to be about that show-sad because it made me realize Corey and Emmy will never beg for that kind of stuff.
I hope that you can get some answers to your medical issues on the 19th. If you have any questions about the mito cocktail just ask.
Please give Nicholas and Nathan a hug from me. All I need to do is think of them and it never fails to make me smile:)

It sounds like you picked out pretty neat leg braces too, it sounds like you and Corey have a lot of ankle issues in common. You, Nathan, Corey and Emmy could have your own little party for kids with braces.
Nathan, I'm so sorry to hear about all the tests that you will be having. They bring back alot of memories for me. We will be praying that they get done quickly and without any pain for you.

Nicholas and Nathan,
Wherever do I start? How do you two keep on getting cuter in each new picture??? Nicholas you are so brave to hold a sparkler, I am scared to hold them! I was soooooo happy to hear that you had a great week off! Isn't it nice just to be kids once in awhile?
I think I need a yummy volcano dessert too, my kids love those.
Keep up the good work on standing Nathan, you will be walking in no time at all! We will be saying extra prayers for you so your surgery will go well.
As usual all of you will be in our thoughts and prayers, especially Tuesday morning, I have already added it to our prayer request list on the refrigerator.
Take care and hope to hear an update on Tuesday that says you are home and all is well!
A word of advice, have the muscle biopsy and forget about it. Never believe them when they say it will be back, it will take longer.
Most of all, Nicholas and Nathan are the two cutest little gifts from God and they were given the best mommy and daddy possible. No matter what else happens, your love for them and theirs for you will never change.

Hi Boys-

Just checking in on you and wanted to know that I am keeping you both in my prayers.Asking Jesus to heal your bodies, and for the Drs taking care of you,to have wisdom for the best care for you!

I know that things are frustrating right now, but remember that God is in control and he wants what is best for you,but it will be in His timing, not ours!

Sending you both hugs!

I'd been praying for y'all when I saw the news about Houston. Sorry to hear about the flooding, but so glad you are all safe. I wish the docs had taken care of Nathan's adenoids, you must be very frustrated. It would be great, though, if they can do the biopsy all at the same time. Praying that he won't need to be admitted after the surgery. I praying they can help Nicholas' tummy ASAP. I know with mito, pseudo-obstruction & motility issues are seen. Praying for you & Doug, I can't imagine going through all of this, with both the boys. Hope you guys have a good rest of the week. Take care. (((HUGS)))

Me again! I saw an ad for this the other day & am probably going to order one for Emma (had some trouble finding just one to order, but the 2nd link may help that. Left a message with the kido company, they are here in Dallas). Check this out: www.kidosbear.com for info & then http://www.buyemp.com/product/1021401.html is a med supply company where you can order just 1. Emma has now been dx with asthma & she gets treatments a lot. Hopefully Nathan is just temporary, but if he ends up using the neb a lot, this may be great tool. Take care!

Hi Melody,
Yikes, I'm tired after reading your entry. Sorry to hear how things have been. Glad Nathan did better after the treatment & hope he is all better SOON. Hope Nicholas is feeling better asap too. I hope they can determine something without the biopsy, but if the boys do need it, I will tell you--Emma did great. It was a day surgery procedure, & they kept Emma comfortable w/ IV pain meds & then Tylenol & Motrin round the clock. She complained a few times (signed boo-boo), they said it might feel like a charlie horse. But, it wasn't too bad. It's now been 3 weeks or so, the incision is looking great & she is fine (she was fine after a couple of days). Praying they can figure a non-invasive way. I felt like Emma had been through so much & didn't want to do anything else--but the thought of finally knowing and this possibly being her last 'big' test, made it a little easier. Email me anytime. Loved my spa day...now if only I could work those in a few times a week, I'd have no stress!! Take care! (((HUGS)))

Wow...lots of news. Congrats on the new job, Doug! Sorry to hear they are now also thinking of mito for both boys. But, I know you, like me, are so ready for an answer. AND, Dr. Shoffner is about 24 mos away from some treatment trials!!! Isn't that great? He sounded very hopeful about them. That's wonderful that TCH is doing fresh biopsies. Oh--so happy about your girls weekend. My sisters are coming into town next week & we are doing that. Will fill ya in on our fun time. Yeah for Doug's new job, your weight loss, the new van, and Susie's improvement at the last time you wrote about her! You've had so many ups and downs the last month, haven't you? If you haven't stopped to do it yet, stop to give yourself a pat on the back for weathering all that. I'm glad to hear good things about TCH's new metabolic/mito work, as that was one of the reasons my daughter felt comfortable moving with her daughters back to Houston, where the school district knew better how to help Emmi (www.caringbridge.org/visit/emmi) after her implant surgery. I hope that the muscle biopsy goes smoothly, if the boys' doctor eventually deems it necessary.

Hi Mel and boys-
Glad to hear that the boys are on the mend. Sorry to hear that you are facing serious questions with the doctors. The only advice that seems to help me is go with your gut, if you like the new doctor better than go with it. It has to be frustrating that you have asked for tests to be done and they wont comply??? Red flags in my book. I know it must be hard to change doctors but if it is your heart, then go for it, after all the best treatment for the boys is what's important. Anyways love to you all and hugs and kisses. I will be around tonight if you want to IM

Back to docs in the a.m. I am very curious at what you learn from the ID doc. I'm wondering if b/c Nicholas' infection was at his gtube site, it's worse? Emma's was on the side of her leg, near her knee, she also had some folliculits on her belly & bottom. I will check in on your site tomorrow or you can email me (addy below). Praying for you all. Take care!

Hello everyone!! Hoppy Easter!!

Nicholas I am very glad to hear that you are now home and feeling much better. I had a cellulitis infection after I had Michael and it was no fun at all... very painful. The meds helped me and I felt a lot better after a few days. I can't wait to hear what new things you are doing and how many new grey hairs you have given your momma (in a GOOD way tho please..).

Much love from the now less then frozen north!!

Oh Nicholas, I feel so sorry for you! I am allergic to most tapes as well. When I had Emmy they were so careful to get my special tape. I couldn't figure out what hurt so bad after surgery until they took off the tape covering the stitches, I was raw and blistered. Ouch it hurt like a bad bad burn for days. Melody the one thing that worked for me was the stoma powder, it took some of the pain away, maybe this would work for Nicholas?
I am praying that he is feeling better.

I remember how excited my daughter was to take my granddaughter in for one of her milestone appointments with her neurologist, excited that Emmi had begun to sit and make other strides forward, only to hear about all the milestones she wasn't hitting. Those appointments can be hard, but the truth is that we all know how great it is when we see our children or grandchildren making progress. Progress means hope for more progress. Most of the time, we can keep that in mind, but it's sometimes hard to do so at those doctor visits or ECI evaluations. I'm glad to hear about Nathan's progress in the stander and that he'll soon be getting the AFO's.

Hey guys-
So glad to read the update!!! Nathan sure does look cute in his stander. I am so glad everything is working out well and that you all had such a great time at the rodeo this weekend. The pictures are so great!!!! Hope Nathan's ears clear up but for good!! Nicholas is such a good big brother, isn't it nice to see them interact so nicely? Unfortunately, knowing this from experience, it will not always be that way. Nathan and Emma play so nice together one minute, and then the next...well you know how it is!!! Enjoy every minute while you can!!! LOL. I guess it is a territory thing, you think we have animals instead of kids LOL!!!! Anyways glad to hear that everything is going smoothly and that you all had a fantastic weekend, it is well deserved and needed!!! Sorry about your bad news. It's hard to hear that when we put so much faith and trust in our doctors. It's a good thing you've discovered it now and they can really treat it before any more damage is done, and it's also good that your family is now finding out more about their health, too. Oh, Melody...I am sorry to hear what the past few weeks have been like for you. I can't imagine trying to absorb & digest all that info at once. It sounds like you have an amazing team of docs for yourself & you're educating yourself...so you've got the 2 most important tools to stay on top of this & fight! I have to thank you because your story is the tap on the shoulder I needed...major family hx of heart disease & diabetes, other health problems. So, this week I'll do my best to see my docs & get a check-up (it's been, let's say, a while!). We moms tend to forget about ourselves & our health...especially when we're running the kiddos to docs all the time. So, thanks for opening my eyes...I'm 28 but still think I'm 18! Well, I'm saying some extra prayers for you. I'd love to meet up with y'all if/when we head to Houston. Our docs here think we should keep both appts. I'll be in touch as we get closer to our appt date. Take care. (((HUGS)))

Oh my - I feel like I am reading my story!!
I was diagnosed with PCOS 5 years ago and not treated either until this past October. Went for my physical and my fasting bloodsugar was 98. That led to further tests and like you, I was realing. I am on Glucophage too. Almost everything you said, I was saying ME TOO!! I am ticked off at all the doctors I have seen over the years that totally dismissed my symptoms as being anything other than tired, stressed mom of four kids.
I am also scared of what might be found next.
I will pray specifically for you.
Thank you so much for posting your story - I now want to follow up with my doctor to get further tests done - I was not referred to any specialist yet.

Melody,
Oh what a beautiful little boy Nathan is. He looks like he should be on a cover of parents magazine!
Corey has smo's, he too wasn't fitted until he was almost 3 but they have helped some. Hope that Nicholas can get the help he needs. I still can't believe the therapist failed to mention her concerns, shame on her!!!!!
By the way, Corey is still playing with the balls you sent him, they are definetely a big hit! His favorite is the one with the ribbons hanging from it, it is already chewed up. I'll have to look for some more since he loves them so much. It is the first toy in months that has caught his attention.
Give your little guys a hug from us!

Hi! Wow--I missed quite an ordeal...so sorry to hear about the high fevers. That must have been scary. I am praying that the answer for both Nicholas & Nathan comes VERY soon. I have heard so many amazing things about the children's hospital in Houston...they do SO much research there for genetic & metabolic issues, sounds like you are in the right place to find that answer!!! Hope Nathan gets ALL the therapy possible! I know it's frustrating dealing with insurance companies and/or ECI's schedule!! Glad to hear he is attempting to sit up...sometimes the will to do something is even more reassuring than the act itself. Keep going, Nathan!!! You have been through so much & continue going through SO much with both the boys (& your own health). You're an amazing mother!! We are praying hard for all of you. Take care. (((HUGS)))

Melody,
You can only imagine the pain I felt for you when I saw the word mito mentioned, it brings such fear into my heart! We will be praying that IF your boys have some syndrome it will be one that is easily fixed with a diet change. There are so many forms of metabolic and mito-and most are hard to diagnose. If you ever need to talk, I'm here for you day or night! I know how scary it must be for you to hear those words. Just know that we are sending a million prayers and hugs to you!

Margo <margoc@brainerd.net>
Pierz, MN - Monday, November 21, 2005 6:09 AM CST
Oh Melody,
My heart is breaking for you right now. I remember the eye doctor telling me with Corey's vision issues we need to look more at neuro issues and not so much mito related. Mikayla also has poor poor vision, even with glasses her vision can't be corrected above 100/20. I just wanted you to know she has never been teased about glasses(thank God for the ultrathin lenses they have now!)
Take care of your reflux and please don't feel you are passed anything on to your kids, as mom to Corey I used to feel horrible guilt as what did I do to cause him to get this. Pass on all those feelings to God and know that he is in control. God must think you and Doug are terrific parents in giving you two such special children. After all he picks out only the best parents for kids with special needs. When I see the pictures of your two little boys all I see are two beautiful kids that are perfect in their own way.
Have a wonderful weekend! Please tell Nicholas and Nathan hi from us!

Happy to hear that Nicholas and Nathan are both feeling better! Temp's in the 60's???? I'd love that! As I'm getting the kids off to school our temp with the windchill is minus 9 degrees.
When I was reading Nicholas 3 year stats, boy did it make me realize how small Corey truly is. Corey is at 20 lbs 3 oz and is 30 1/4 inches long. Sometimes I don't notice how small Corey is as I live with him each day, what an eye opener, no wonder I never ask for % anymore!

Hi Pohla family!
I'm hoping and praying that all is well with no new update. We all enjoyed your new pumpkin patch pics and the ones from JcPenny's are soooooo cute. We all think your boys should be on a magazine cover! I don't know how you will choose which ones to buy, they are all too cute!
As always you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Yippee! Way to go Nathan! I am so happy to hear of the wonderful progress you are making, keep on working hard sweetie! You are growing up so quickly, already eating solid food, it seems like just yesterday I heard that you were born. I keep on picturing you as a newborn, not the big boy you are becoming.
Nicholas, I am so sorry that you are having scary nightmares, we will be sending extra prayers your way that all those yucky dreams stay away.
Melody and Doug-you guys are such fabulous parents, taking such good care of two little boys that need extra care, I don't know how you manage, therapy for Corey is all I can handle, I can't even imagine have to do it for 2!

I came to your site through Emma's. We're in Texas, too, in the Dallas area, and were the hosts for some evacuees and their pets from the Port Arthur area, and their trips here were horrendous. I'm glad you didn't try to make it all the way here with the boys! I'm sorry about the uncertainty in the news from the neurologist. I've just been doing research all night again, scaring myself, after my granddaughter (tx/emmipaige) got some troubling news today, so my advice is to stay off the Internet medical sites! Smile. Seriously, it's tough not knowing the answers, but as another guestbook signer mentioned, you sound like a great parent, able to sort all this out and make great decisions for your children. Congratulations on the progress being made.

I hadn't been on p2p in SO long, but was so relieved to learn about post-fundo spit-up/vomiting & it being ok. Phew! I am so sorry to hear about Nathan's MRI & the uncertainty that (once again) lies aheady. I cannot imagine the strain & stress. But I do know one thing: Nicholas & Nathan are blessed to have one very amazing mom!!! You & your family are in our thoughts & prayers. (((HUGS)))

We have a generator in case the electricity goes out here. We even convinced our insurance company to pay part of it. We are all very happy to hear that you are home Mel. We will definetely be sending prayers for Nathan as well as for the rest of you. Corey too had jaundice and we did have the lights at home for a few days with public health over seeing things. I hope they can work out something for you to continue on at home. Your marathon nursing sessions made me giggle as I breastfed all my kids for varying amounts of time and somedays that seemed to be all I did do.
Please tell Nicholas our snow is gone again. It was mother nature's trick, heavy snow and within a couple of hours it was gone. Liam thinks it was her April Fool's joke on us. We all wish Nicholas could some and play in the snow with us next winter, the kids are very surprised to hear that not everyone gets huge snowdrifts in the winter.
Take care, all of you are in our prayers and give your little ones a hug from us!
