Carter Blade LaFeber

June 17, 2004 - November 11, 2004

Carter was born June 17, 2004. Six days later he was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive, cancerous brain tumor. We spent 85 days with him in the ICU. Carter endured 3 brain surgeries, a tracheostomy, and an intense round of chemotherapy. After a courageous battle, Carter passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his parents. During his short time on earth he touch many lives; everyone who met him or even just heard about him fell in love instantly and their lives were changed for the better. He fought hard, endured well, and now he can rest. Carter's smile will be forever in our hearts.

Lucky number 7 today for Carter! This past year has flown by. We have been busy lately with packing everything up to move to a new adventure somewhere (undecided at this point). We decided it was time to move. We sold the house after a week on the market. But we forgot one small detail- to buy a new house. So after a road trip to Utah, the next item of business will be house hunting in Austin.

Jaxson has been busy with soccer, scouts and basketball, including a victory over dad in our own version of the March Madness tournament. A few minutes after the winning basket, someone came to take away the hoop since we didn’t have a good way to store it. Allie has been taking gymnastics class and getting ready to start Kindergarten after this summer. Ryland is the bully of the house and pounds on everyone, but is also the cutest little red-head in town (aside from Lexie of course). Lexie is on the cusp of walking and has the cuts, bumps and bruises to prove it.

Your birthday started out as usual with a call from “Geoffrey the Giraffe” from Toys R’ Us, sending you birthday wishes. Then on to your garden to deliver flowers and an Incredibles balloon. Your mom is so thoughtful, each year she gets the same arrangement of flowers and she even bought a supply of the Incredibles balloons so that we could always bring one by. Next it was on to the Ronald McDonald house to talk with the staff and thank them for providing a place for mom and I to stay several years ago. Finally we had lunch together with Papa and Gram.

Seems really crazy that seven years have gone by. Our memories of being with you are so vivid and mom, Jax and I can remember well the time we spent together. The other day Ryland asked me “dad do you think Carter would play Barbie’s with me?” I thought for a moment and said “I know that he would play with you, maybe not Barbie’s, but something even more fun, like GI Joe or Star Wars.” She thought that sounded good.

We miss you very much and think of you every day.
