"ADAM'S STORY"

A HAPPY, HEALTHY, WELL 4 YR. OLD CHILD...
ONLY 4 HRS. AFTER ARRIVING IN ER DIAGNOSED WITH LEUKEMIA-AML...
4 HRS. AFTER DIAGNOSIS PLACED ON LIFE SUPPORT (INDUCED COMA)...
4 DAYS LATER, REMOVED FROM LIFE SUPPORT...
"NOW, AN ANGEL OF GOD'S"
UNBELIEVEABLE, BUT TRUE.
(Refer to Past History written by mom one year later, beginning
January 10-20, 2004 particularly.)

Adam became ill on Thursday, January 16, 2003, around 3:45 pm after waking up from a nap. He came into the kitchen rubbing his eyes and saying they burned and hurt. I picked him up and noticed his right eye looked a little swollen. All of a sudden he lets out a scream. A scream like I had never heard before. Painful. He said his eyes hurt and he couldn't see. The next thing I noticed was his gums were red and swollen, bleeding, and appeared as if they were pulling away from his teeth. I picked him up and ran to the telephone, called my husband and told him to get home immediately. By the time he arrived Adam was acting as if he could barely stay awake, and not quite sure what was going on. We arrived at the emergency room in Brenham around 5:00 pm and were triaged. Initial diagnosis was the Norwalk virus with dehydration. Around 7:00 pm, after blood work results, and a white blood count of 525,000, we were told he had leukemia (ALL) and would be rushed to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas. This is when the nightmare began and life changed forever. By 8:30 pm we were in an ambulance. They did give him something to put him to sleep so he would not pull out the needles. Upon arrival (approximately 9:15 pm), a perfectly normal 98 percent oxygen level dropped to 46 percent in front of our eyes, he was shoved into a room and was intubated. By now his head was about three times its size and his tongue was hanging out of his mouth. He looked as if he had been poisoned. His brain stem was being pushed down into his neck his head was swelling so rapidly. Blood began to pour from his nose and mouth. They thought they might have to split his head open to relieve the pressure. At this point the only thing left to do was to sign life support papers (9:30 pm), because he was living minute to minute. Around 2:00 a.m. the next morning we were told he had a rare leukemia (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia - Subtype 4/5), which affected his brain, spleen, and liver. His chances of surviving this disease were now in the hands of God. A clinical brain test was performed, he did not respond. Brain profusion tests were run around 10:00 am. They showed only a tiny vessel, which was not really blood flow, but legally the doctor could not declare him brain dead until the test showed no vessels lighting up. He remained on life support until Monday, January 20, 2003 at which time a second brain profusion test was run, this time totally dark. We were told there was no more blood flow to the brain. At 11:01 am we chose to remove him from life support. Adam immediately became an angel in heaven with his "Sweet Jesus". Tim, Andrew and I surrounded his bed and covered him with prayer. We took turns holding him and crawled up in the bed and cuddled with him, just as he always loved to do. "Hold me tight", he would say. The room was filled with continuous Christian music as he joined the angels in his heavenly home.

Adam was a student in Mrs. Campbell's Pre-Kindergarten Class at First Baptist Church School and a faithful member of Sunday School. Adam loved music, soccer, and his special doll, Charlotte.

We, the family, would like to extend our deepest thanks to Dr. Lisa Wang and Dr. Doug Meyers, Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, for giving Adam the best care humanly possible. A special thanks to nurses Randy Bowen, Priscilla Phillips Reid, Julie Kuzin, Wendy Kuiroc and respiratory therapist, Abbey Nelson. You were by his bedside continuously and we know he felt your love. To Bill Riddle, thank you for sharing the word of God with us and Adam. The love we as a family felt from you can never be replaced. Texas Children's Hospital PICU 7th Floor and all who cared for our precious Adam, we thank you and love you. You will all continue to be in our prayers. May God bless you for the love and care you provide for all those critically ill children. You are special people and God knows that.

ADAM CHRISTIAN CULLIVER, WHO WAS HE?
Adam, known as "Little Precious" was and always will be our precious son and brother. The joy of our lives. He lived out his middle name "Christian," that he was and will continue to be in Heaven. He only shared 4 years and 9 months with us, which was not nearly long enough. Adam accomplished more in this short time than most people do in a lifetime.

He showed people the love of God. Through him, lives have been changed. He was a witness to many and brought many to love the Lord, our God, ultimately. He was contagious in a way that we cannot even begin to explain. We will always remember your happy, smiling face. Life was always happy and an adventure for you. It will continue to be even more so in heaven. You rest, little precious, for you are in the hands of the Lord. He will take care of you until we meet again in heaven. Thank you for sharing those years with us and thank you for the witness you were here on earth.
Forever in our hearts,
Mom, Dad, and Brother

THE CAROLINE PRYCE WALKER CONQUER CHILDHOOD CANCER ACT OF 2008
IS OFFICIALLY LAW!!!

The bill was officially signed into law on Tuesday, July 29, 2008.
Click HERE to read and learn more about President George W. Bush and the signing of this bill.

ABOUT THE CONQUER CHILDHOOD CANCER ACT?

WHY:
Until the day comes when every child can live a life free of cancer, we must continue to strengthen our investment in childhood cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, and awareness. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children.

Each year, over 12,000 children are diagnosed with cancer and more than 2,000 of these young lives are lost. Our legislation will give a voice to the thousands of children and families in the United States who have been touched by childhood cancer and will give the thousands of physicians, nurses and scientists the tools they need to find a cure for this terrible disease.

THE LEGISLATION:
Centers of Excellence for Childhood Cancer Research
Childhood Cancer Clinical Research Fellowship Program
National Childhood Cancer Research Database
Outreach and Education for Pediatric Cancer Patients and Families
Authorization of Appropriations: $30 million annually for 5-fiscal year period.

WHAT CANCER CANNOT DO

Cancer is so limited...
It cannot cripple LOVE
It cannot shatter HOPE
It cannot corrode FAITH
It cannot destroy PEACE
It cannot kill FRIENDSHIP
It cannot suppress MEMORIES
It cannot silence COURAGE
It cannot invade the SOUL
It cannot steal eternal LIFE
It cannot conquer the SPIRIT.

Adam's Favorite Song...
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE
by Mercy Me

I can only imagine what it will be like,
When I walk by Your side.
I can only imagine hat my eyes will see,
When Your face is before me:
I can only imagine.

Surrounded by Your glory,
What will my heart feel?
Will I dance for you Jesus?
Or in awe of You be still?
Will I stand in Your presence?
Or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing Hallelujah?
Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine.

I can only imagine when that day comes,
And I find myself standing in the Sun.
I can only imagine when all I will do,
Is forever, forever worship You.

Yeah, I can only imagine.

(Can you imagine?)
I can only imagine.

I can only imagine. (Can you imagine?)
I can only imagine. (I can imagine.)

I can only imagine.
I can only imagine.

One of Adam's favorite children's songs he loved to sing...

"JESUS LOVES THE LITTLE CHILDREN"
Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Red, brown, yellow, black and white
They are precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world.

I WON'T BE FAR AWAY

When I am gone, release me, let me go;
I have so many things to see and do;
You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears;
I gave you my love, you can only guess,
How much you gave to me in happiness;
I thank you for the love you each have shown;
But now it's time I travel on alone;
So grieve a while for me if you must;
Then let your grief be comforted by trust;
It's only for a while that we must part;
So keep the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, for life goes on;
So if you need me, call and I will come,
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near;
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear;
All of my love around you soft and dear;
And when you must come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile and say,
"Welcome Home".

********************
The following poem is about three gifts our "little precious" left us
as he went to his permanent home in heaven. We read them daily and
they are what helps us make it through each day.
With Love,
Dad, Mom, Brother

UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
When dawn's first light turned into day,
who knew an angel would soon call me away.
And though I didn't get the chance to say goodbye.
I leave you three things to help you get by.
I leave you COURAGE,
that you might see
your heart can rebuild
a world without me.
I leave you FAITH,
that you might believe
the spirit will survive
no matter how much we grieve.
And I leave you LOVE,
to comfort you in its healing embrace
until we meet again in another place.

Brenham Families Meet With McCaul to Discuss Childhood Cancer Funding

Thursday, June 16, 2005 1:40 PM CDT
(This article was written by Congressman McCaul's Press Secretary Jack Hirschfield and appeared in several papers on June 16, 2005.)

Congressman Michael McCaul (center) met Wednesday with members of two Brenham families to discuss childhood cancer research: (from left) Leslie and Garrett Webb, and Tim and Donna Culliver and son Andrew.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Michael McCaul met Wednesday with a
Brenham family that is pushing for more funding of childhood cancer research.
McCaul, whose 10th District includes Washington County, met with the Culliver family. Tim and Donna Culliver lost their son, Adam, to cancer in January 2003.
During the meeting, McCaul said he would work to secure more funding
for research aimed at finding a cure for childhood cancer.
"I'm not sure there's a greater pain in the world than having to watch
your child's life taken by cancer. After hearing the Culliver's story
America must do more to help find a cure for this dreaded disease," McCaul said.

The Cullivers joined several other families from around the United States in
Washington to draw attention to cancer, the number one killer disease of children.
Through their stories and personal experiences these families are helping raise
awareness of the thousands of families touched by this disease
and the critical need for a cure.

"We had a great meeting with Congressman McCaul. He understands the issues
and how important it is to work to make sure America is doing all it can to stop
cancer from taking another child," said Donna Culliver.

McCaul will be working CureSearch and fellow members of the U.S. House of Representatives to appropriate more funding for research.

***************

KEY MESSAGES

* Substantial cuts proposed for the National Cancer Institute will reduce its funding for
children’s cancer research to an all time low.

* For the first time in research funding history, 20 STUDIES WILL BE PUT ON HOLD and
enrollment will DECREASE IN NEW CLINICAL TRIALS BY MORE THAN 400 CHILDREN.

* Forty years ago, cure rates for most childhood cancers were lower than 10%.
Today, 78% of childhood cancer patients overall are now able to be cures.

* While there have been remarkable breakthroughs in cancer treatments and improvement
in survival rates,
one out of five children continues to die.

* For the 40,000 children living with cancer today and the 12,500 that will be diagnosed in 2007,
the decrease in federal funding for childhood cancer clinical research puts children
at risk now and in the future.

Journal

Thursday, February 12, 2009 0:13 AM CST

Today, I come to Adam's CaringBridge website with a very heavy heart. One of the children we have been helping for over a year is very, very sick. The cancer demon has totally taken over her body and refuses to allow her to heal on this earth. I pray for dear Jana. We have become very close with the family and my heart is broken all over again, watching another child come close to the end of their journey.

Some of you have kept us with Adam's site over the years and some have not. I have taken a break from actually journaling on his site. We created another basic website www.AdamsAngelsMinistry.org for the actual ministry; however we are not able to journal or blog, so for a while I am going to update this site.

We completely took the ministry over as of September 2008. We have now formed our own Board and have monthly meetings and are operating independently from our church. Sadly enough, there is such a demand for non-profit organizations such as ours. We have been very blessed with donations and wonderful volunteers which has allowed us to really reach out to more family experiencing childhood cancer. I wish I could say one day that there is not a need for our organization, but right now that is just not the case. I don't know about you guys out their in the childhood cancer world, but to me it seems like more children are relapsing.

Today we were able to attend a meeting with Candlelighters and meet quiet a few new families at Children's Cancer Hospital of MD Anderson. Our ministry was also able to provide parking passes and food passes to Candlelighters who will distribute to families in need. God has been so good to us. He has allowed us the strength, obedience, and financial support to carry on his work in the childhood cancer world. We are blessed.

I will try to update more often and for now I pray for those families that we met today, expecially Daniella, and our precious Jana.

God Bless You All
Angel Adam's Mom
