Zoey Moriah Gilliam

Our angel Zoey was diagnosed with a brain tumor on June 18, 2003, after being sick for a month and in the hospital for what they thought was spinal meningitis. The tumor was the size of a tangerine and was causing hydrocephalus. We flew out to Memphis on June 22, and were prepared for brain surgery on June 24. The operation went well, thanks to God and her wonderful surgeon, Dr. Sanford. A week later we were informed that it was a cancerous tumor called an Ependymoma. We were released from the hospital on July 6, and returned home for a week to pack and return to Memphis to begin six and a half weeks of radiation. While waiting to begin the treatments we had a small set back. Her cerebro spinal fluid was leaking from a hole in her skull, which caused a fluid mass to bulge out of the back of her head. So we had a repair surgery on July 17. Once she had healed up enough they were able to begin her radiation treatment on July 28. She handled the radiation pretty well, she was really tired and had some nausea. Talk about a real trooper. She finished her rounds of radiation on September 11, 2003, what a joyous day. We were given the odds of a 60-80% cure rate, and the odds are in her favor. She is a real fighter and has handled this battle better than most adults would. Just keep praying and loving her is all we can do for the next few years until we are in the clear. What a great day that will be!!!!!

Sorry soo long in between postings. Things are going great! Celebrated Zoey's 5 yr Cancer Free day on 9-11-08. Did the Libby Lu party, pictures, and then went to Fun Expedition and played the rest of the night. We also had a party at her school and she left school early, which was one of the best parts for her lol. Since then we moved at the 1st of October about 40 mins away from Limestone. Needed to move closer to my mom, work, and civilization... Limestone is just tooooo remote. Zoey is adjusting to the new school pretty well, still some issues here and there, but otherwise well. Zoey's getting ready to start Cheerleading practice soon, has a meeting on Monday. And has been practicing for her big school play at the first of December. On another note, please pray and stop by to visit a friend we meet on caringbridge whom also has an Ependymoma, and has relapsed. Her name is Erin Roderick and I will add her site on to the page. Pray for her, her family, and all the others out there battling for their lives against this horrible disease!!

God Bless
