Justin will need a kidney transplant

On Dec 22nd we found out our son was in Chronic Renal Failure (kidney failure). There are no words to describe the feelings of hearing those words.

While in the hospital they felt his body was attacking itself. He received 4 pints of blood and 4 units of plazma. His red blood cells were being produced but then being destroyed. Also, finding that his blood is not clotting and they can not do a kidney biospy to see why his kidneys have shut down.

We are asking for all prayers. Please announce it at your church. No matter what your religious choice if you feel in your heart you can do this for us. I want to thank all of you. I will never know how far this will reach and who will be praying but our Father will and he hears our prayers

Update 5/5/04
Justin has a best friend who is being worked up for transplant today.

Update 3/18/04
Justin's brother Keith went for testing today. He will be unable to donate. See March 18th update.

Update 2/8/04
He and his older brother have an appointment this month at Vanderbilt to do testing for a transplant.
If his brother matches we will go forth with the transplant. Justin has 0- blood.

Update 1/24/04
We have a dx now. IGaN or IGa Nephropathy. Justin had a kidney biospy, Friday Jan 23rd at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville. All the information says that this disease takes 10 to 20 years to develop into End Stage Renal Failure. A simple blood test in the early stages and we would have been able to dx'ed and treat it. Now they say there is a rapid onset IGaN so it didn't take 10-20 years to develop.

Update 2/8/04
Talking with 3 Home Hemodialysis Clinic, all in Nashville, 2 hours away, we feel it would be best to wait until after the transplant appointment this month.

Prayer request 02/01/04
Justin is asking for prayers that he will be able to do the hemodialysis (HD) at home. This would involve possibly renting or buying a big kidney machine, like they have at the Dialysis Clinic. A nurse would have to teach us how to work on it.

Update 1/15/04
It is now known as End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Justin has been going to dialyis Moday-Wed and Fri. His kidneys do not function at all.

Journal

Tuesday, February 15, 2005 3:43 AM CST

Justin transplant has been cancelled. I told you that Richard's blood work at pre-op Friday showed elevated liver enzymes again. They was normal on 1/28/05. The transplant team involving 8 doctors met yesterday and decided it was not safe to precede with the transplant. Richard will need more extensive testing to determine why this is happening.

We were told to precede with plans to go to Vanderbilt on Monday 2/14, and had made plans since Friday.

Justin and Richard had a full weekend. Saturday Justin rested all day to recover from all day pre-op Friday, Saturday night they went to the Grand Old Opry in Nashville. Sunday morning church. Sunday afternoon the young people (ages18-24) from church came over to the house and they prayed and sang. Sunday at 4:30p they had the men's meeting at church then at 6p it was our 2nd Sunday signing night.

Yesterday all of us were packed and waiting for that phone call to tell us to come on down. No go. Justin is really depressed this time. He commented he could just stop dialysis and die, and would only continue to go and live for us. He went to dialysis yesterday but came off 52 mins early.

Justin has had his 2nd catheter in his chest that goes down into his heart since 2/04. The doctors have been wanting to place an access in his arm (to do dialysis with) since early summer, but with the transplant going to happen at any time I was able to keep putting it off. He does not want an arm access. It involves another surgery, leaves a very bad scar, the needle will go in his veins during dialysis, the needles are painful for months, and most at his center have to wait 30-45 mins after dialysis to get the arm to stop bleeding. He sees the horror of it. He will have a scar on his chest, however, his shirt will covers it up. He does not want a scar on his arm. I am praying that when he wakes up this morning he will see a new day.
