My Sweet Susannah, you are 12 years old today! You are never out of my mind or heart. I have a beatiful yard full of yellow flowers and as each bloom appears, I smile with the wonderful memories of you flood through me. Not only Grammy but everyone who met you will always have "Three foot of Sunshine" in all of our hearts. I feel your 'Three Feet of Sunshne " gives off a warmth I feel every day. I love you Sweet Susannah, Grammy

Susannah's legacy continues - I hope into the lives of those I touch because of who she was and the memories that continue to brighten my days.
I've just been accepted for training as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA volunteer) where I have requested to be assigned to a child who is medically fragile. Of course.

Klane's colleague's haiku:
Smiles that live on;
A legacy of laughter;
Three Feet of Sunshine
- indeed.

I expect it's been a challenging week for many of us as we reflect that it's already been two years. She's often fresh and smiling in my mind because I'm reminded daily by: the dog next door; the wooden spoon that stirred the brownies; a walk to a park; my lunch box; seeing a toy stroller; rain; cutting a kiwi fruit; black cats; a fine wool throw; poppadoms and curry - too many to list. I'm also thinking of all those who loved her and have different, but similar memories, of one little girl. What a legacy!

Amy, Klane and Madeline,
I could not go through Christmas with out thinking of all the Christmas's we spent together with the White Family. Now it will be 2 years we have missed. Last Christmas I was scheduled to have spine surgery and then a few weeks ago I was supposed to go to see you and braid Madeline's hair for her recital, then I went and broke my leg and missed it. Amy, I was thrilled that you did take all those lessons to heart and were able to do it yourself and made the best braids in the show. Maybe next year we can be together again.

Sweet Susannah up in Heaven, While you were here with us Poppy and I were able to spend every Christmas with you and your family except your first. (We had already scheduled to spend it with the Ferrandos in North Carolina) but we were able to come to see you before we left. A sight I will never forget was when the Priest at the church plopped you in Baby Jesus's cradle and Madeline stood right beside you whispering to anyone who could hear that Susannah was your sister. You had just been diagnosed and the Priest said it was befitting that you were Baby Jesus. Another time I will never forget was in Dallas and we were havng Christmas at the hospital apartment. I will never forget your face when I got the big singing snowman and brought it to the apartment for Christmas morning. You were so surprised you were just one continous giggle. Your delight just made my heart burst with joy. Madeline was so cute watching the snowman and you. Madeline just loved to see you giggle. We all loved your giggle and your wiggle when you were excited and we do miss it more than anyone will ever know but we know you are having a special day and we feel your love as if it was yesterday we with you. Darren gave me a ring that matches your logo and I wear it every day. Everytime I look at it, I think of one more Susannah moment. I love you and miss you but you are in my heart everyday and loving you will never stop.
Love, Grammy

Madeline's essay has struck me deeply. As I was reading I was associating my relationship I had growing up with my health-challenged sister. No one else understood her as I did and vice verse. She had to deal with so much too, and even the last week of her life, speech gone, she pointed at me and mouthed, "She's tough...she's strong". If she only knew...SHE was the strong tough one...she was the hero just as Susannah was. I get it....I truly get it. Madeline has expressed it so perfectly. Thank you Madeline, and thanks to our sisters above!

Susannah shines bright in her Grammy's heart. Every day I go out into her garden of yellow flowers. I have yellow pansies blooming brightly and it seems that I always have at least 9 roses blooming. The rule is that the buds must begin to unfold and the older ones that are finished and ready to fall are not counted. Of course sometimes I play a Susannah game and count by my own rules but the main thing is Susannah's flowers remind me every day just how special she is in my heart and what an impact she had on my life and those who she touched. We all loved her so and I know she knew just how much. I went to Cabrillo three days ago with Sandy McM, whose little dog, Abbey, so delighted Susannah. It was one of the few public places S got to visit - in her mask, of course. Cabrillo was uncrowded with fresh winds from the ocean and she enjoyed taking her doll somewhere new and having an in-car picnic. Sandy and I relived the hour that we spent there with her. I still marvel that I got to spend so much quality time with Susannah. Thanks to the Whites and those who continue to post - it helps.

Amy, I just received the email from Therapy 2000 about Susannah and I am truly saddened by the news of her passing. This website is such a wonderful tribute to her and the constant joy that she has brought into so many lives. I consider myself privileged to have had an opportunity to be a part of her "therapy world," even for a short time. I apologize for not keeping in better contact with you since your move to Seattle. Even so, I did (and still do) think of you fondly and often! Please know that I am always a phone call or email away. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks, again, for your friendship and the opportunity to be touched by such a wonderful little girl. She will be greatly missed. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. What a wonderful tribute. As I read through Susannah's teacher's tribute, I could visualize Susannah as if I had worked with her yesterday...that wonderful, strong personality obviously did not change! I just returned from Seattle where I stayed with Madeline while Amy and Klane got away to San Francisco for 5 days. I was able to spend another 5 days with them when they got back. Although Susannah is not physically at the Whites' she is there in every other way. Amy has been building memories that keep the spirit of Susannah close to their hearts. They are planting two cherry trees, one in her memory and one is a "big sister" tree. The yellow daliah's and yellow roses from her celebration are blooming in the yard. Amy has gotten two more yellow rhodedrums to plant in the garden. The stepping stone with Madeline and Susannah's footprint is surrouned by impatiens that are blooming still. No where you go inside or outside could you possibly not feel Susannah's presence. Funny how little things mean so much but folding her socks brought a flood of memories and tears to my eyes. Every night Madeline goes to bed with two of Sis's blankets and her beloved George is by Madeline's side. Madeline took "Snuffy" to church Sunday to be be blessed on Saint Francis Day. Amy keeps beautiful yellow flowers on her grave site and today when we visited they were making plans to bring Sis a little pumpkin and maybe a little "Ghost" like the one they have in their yard. The love of Amy's friends sending the charm bracelet was beautiful and so appreciated by Amy. The reasons for each charm was profound to the impact Susannah had on everyone who was able to spend those special moments with her. All of these things keep the family moving forward and in a way keeping Susannah close to everyone's heart. I even found some cardinal and gold flowers to put with the Halloween decorations and told Amy that we needed to put up the picture of Sis and Madeline when they were USC cheerleaders for Halloween when they were in Texas. I have that picture up at my house. All of this helps to move forward yet nothing will ever take away how much everyone misses Susannah, but because her spirit was so strong she will always be close to the hearts of those she loved and who loved her.

Oh what a absolutely perfect tribute from Miss Cindy. It makes it even harder to fathom it's been 2 months. As I sit here tonight, thinking of both Sus and Jules (on this 3rd anniversary of her journey to heaven), I picture them both...together...gleefully giggling. It is a picture that brings a smile to my face in the midst of the sadness that they are no longer physically here. Sending my love from across the states.

Dear White family,
I dont know if you remember me and my son, Austin, he is hurlers and him and Susannah were the same age, we met on line in 2001 while AUstin was undergoing his stem cell transplant at duke, we stayed in touch for a little while but as life here got "normal" I lost touch with alot of people, I was checking on another website and saw about Susannah, please know you are all in our prayers and I read the website everyday and just cry, my mom even printed out copies for our family and friends to read about "another Austin" as we call all our hurler babies that we know! We are praying so hard for you guys and I hope and pray that Susannah gives you strength to get through this, I will never forget her, even though never formally meeting, I will always remember her smile and beauty!! lots of love and prayers to you all

Dear Amy, Klane and Madeline,

We have just heard of Susannah's passing and are deeply saddened. Our hearts and prayers go out to you during this very difficult time. Amy, it has been a long time since we have had contact, but I want you to know how much I admire you. We as mothers can feel overwhelmed at times, but you have lived through one of the most difficult, emotionally heart wrenching experiences a mother could ever have to endure. You must have had many painful moments that you had to take in stride to be strong for both Susannah and Madeline. I can only imagine what you are feeling at this moment, but may you find some peace in knowing you are truly an amazing mother, one we can all learn from and aspire to be.
Our deepest condolences,

I was touched by your families and friends support! I wish I had had more time to talk to everyone- they were so great and they love you and Susannah very much- that was very evident!
I know that once things settle down you will feel a greater sense of loss and I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone! i am here to talk any hour of the day and will try to phone you next week but call before if you want!

Hi guys,

As the dust settles, and company wanes, I imagine the enormity of what just happened will be very painful as you miss your little girl more and more each and every day. I am so sorry she couldn't stay a little longer, but I know that you take comfort in the knowledge that she struggles no more. What a magnificent angel she was to grace this earth with her presence and touch so, so many! I think I can speak for everyone that was in awe at the outpouring of support and love she has created for her family. As you took such great care in every detail of her life, you did so with every detail of her send off to heaven. Her services were absolutely beautiful to perfection...just as she is and always was. A celebration fitting of a princess and a remarkable family. I am choked up with honor to have been included in the long line-up of people she was sent here to touch. As evident this past week, the Hurler family is strong....strong because these special little ones have taught us what life is really about and how to live life to the fullest under the most trying of circumstances. Thank you for sharing such a precious gift with us. Know that I am only a phone call away, and my heart and prayers will be with you Amy, Klane, and Madeline.

Dear Amy,Klane,& Madeline, Vern and I were not fortunate enough to meet your amazing daughter. However, we did meet Madeline at your dad's house once. She played with Britney's girls, (who are about the same age as yours.) I can't imagine what you have gone through, but of one thing I am sure. Heavenly Father chooses only those who were perfect in the pre-existence to come to this earth as Susannah did. She changed the lives for the better for all of those who knew her. I can tell that from reading all of the entries. I don't know if you believe in a pre-existence, but as Latter Day Saints, we do. She has lived a very painful and difficult life with so much dignity and grace. You were very fortunate to be her parents and her sister. We pray that each day will be a little easier. From what I read about Susannah, she will want you to continue life without her as happily as you can. We want to come to Seattle one day to visit with you and your siblings. You were all little kids when Vern and I were married. I think the last time we saw you was at that family reunion at Lagoon; you were just recently married. Again, our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Klane, Amy and Madeline,

Susannah was such a courageous little girl--a joy to be around. She so enjoyed coming over to my house to feed the ducks in the back yard and to throw her doll into the pool for a swim. I so admire your family for your commitment to making sure that Susannah had a happy life. Not many families could have done what you all have done to make her life, and your own, as rich as possible. You were so fortunate to have the support of your extended families and your friends to help you through this most difficult journey. Take care of yourselves.

Love,

Dear Dr. White and Family,

It was with great sadness that we read about Susannah’s earthly departure at such a young age. She sounds like an amazing, wonderful person who blessed many lives. We are particularly impressed with how you were able to care for your patients with such compassion and professionalism while you had so much happening in your personal life. We already admired your care for our family and we now find ourselves feeling more appreciative of the care we have received. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

I will always treasure having been so involved in the care of this most amazing girl through this long, hard part of her journey. Her spirit, joyful life, sense of humor, ability to connect with pretty much everybody, and to keep me on my toes will stay with me forever. She, and your family, have taught me so much. Know that my warm and caring thoughts will stay with you, Amy, Klane and Madeline, and that especially on Fridays, when I so often stopped by to "check in" (and to try to answer as many of Amy's thoughtful questions as I could!), I will miss you all and smile at the memories of her little chuckle.

Dear Amy, Klane, and Madalene,

I just can't hold back the tears back as I write this message.... Susannah was such a special girl with a great personality and a lot of spunk! She brightend my world by knowing her and working with her for the year that you all were in Dallas. I loved her spirt, her attitute and her glowing smile. You all are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Love, Julie Kilgore (OT from HP)

Amy, Klane & Mad,

My heart aches with sorrow at this news, but knowing your family has enriched my life. I have many happy memories of the girls when you were in Minnesota and when I visited California. Susannah was such a gift; she lit up the world with her giggle and incomparable spirit. She will be sorely missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to meet her or be inspired by her story you have so graciously shared with the world. Heaven has gained the Angel that has left a hole in our hearts. My thoughts and prayers were and are, always with you. Mad - although I can’t be there on Thursday, I will be wearing yellow for Susannah too. She was very lucky to have a big sister that knew just when she needed princess crowns and ice cream parties. I know you will all treasure that stepping stone forever. Love and hugs to all.

Im deeply saddened to hear the news about Susannah. I had the incredible pleasure of helping with her care in Seattle for many months this year - and every morning looked forward to being met with a smile or dance from Miss Susannah - she had an incredible personality. It was an honor to have known her - and to have seen the amount of love and energy parents are capable of providing. I am in Alaska, and will not be able to attend the survices- but will be thinking of the family.

Even though I never came to know Susannah personally, I feel as though I've always known her. My 1st cousin, with whom I grew up in Louisiana, Jackie Teichman, kept me informed of Susannah's progress and ultimately, her passing from this earth.

I've also looked upon Susannah as an "angel" sent to bring an element of happiness to all of us and also to bring some "lessons" to all that were, in any way, involved with her.

May Creator give her Godspeed on her journey and ultimate peace and happiness. She will be missed by all who were touched by her.

Susannah certainly did have a great sense of humor accompanied by that hearty deep chuckle. I remember when I visited in SD and Amy was pre-occupied with someone that stopped by. Susannah and I were by ourselves in another room, sitting on the floor playing, and she starting signing to me like crazy. I panicked. I have NO knowledge in signing so it got quite comical. The more I guessed at what she was trying to tell me, the more laughing hysterically she became. Apparently, I was way off base with all my guesses and to this day only she knows how crazy that conversation was! She was laughing so hard and her eyes were twinkling with absolute glee at how silly (or stupid) I was. That is one memory I will really treasure. I'm sure everyone she had contact with has a similar story as she was, and still is, such a treasure!

To Susannah's family: Although it has been awhile since I saw Susannah at the University of Minnesota hospital, I still have vivid memories of a beautiful little girl who loved to be silly. One of my favorite memories was during a PT session where Susannah and I were sitting on a bolster swing working her sitting balance - and I was the one who fell off. Susannah landed on top of me and we laughed and laughed. I just heard today of her passing, and wanted to share a happy memory of her. In reading these other posts, she touched so many lives, and I am glad I was able to know her and your family. I am so sorry for your loss. Susan Jacobsen (Physical Therapy, U of M hospital)

She is so cute. When she would take her daily walks here at Children's,she would have the nurses bring her up to the seventh floor and wait for them to open the door to the Switchboard. Dear Klane, Amy and Madeline,

Denise called me this morning to pass on the sad news about your little angel Susannah. My heart aches for you all. Susannah did indeed leave behind many happy memories for us all to treasure. Amy I will never forget us sitting in my living room after Christina died and Sus curiously searching for the cheetos in my pantry. I can still see her delightful big grin on her face & remember her soft little giggles indicating that her mission was accomplished. She must of know that those were also Christina's favorites.

May you find solace in the memories that you made with her and my you seek God's comfort & draw closer to him during the days ahead. I know Sus will have her chance now to Dance for Jesus in heaven, just as the song "I can only imagine" says.

"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these. Matt: 19:14

Dear Amy, Klane and Madeline
We are very sad to hear of Susannah's leaving your side. It does sound as if she really needed to rest and she chose a moment in which she was surrounded by all her loved ones. I still remember talking to Amy in Luna's first birthday (2 months after Susannah's) about how you thought something was not quite right. Such a long time fighting! She has been so lucky to be able to enjoy every good moment surrounded with such a powerful love as you all irradiate. I am absolutely touched by Madeline's ideas and how timely they were. She will always remember this and you must be so proud of her! Wishing you a peaceful time in which lots of beautiful memories help you get through the days. Love from Ana, Nico, Inaki and Luna

Dear Klane, Amy, and Madeline,

Words cannot express the heartache and depth of sadness that we feel for your loss. While no words will take away the pain, we hope you can take some solace in knowing that you gave her the best life she could have ever had. Your unconditional love and dedication, and the joy that you shared were a sight to behold. Truly beautiful and inspirational. Her spunky little spirit will stay alive in our memories. Her passing brings into focus both the beauty and tragedy of life, and that the obligation for this gift is to give love and to 'seize the day.' We think of you often, and know that your days will be bright again.

Dear Amy,Klane,Madeline,Jackie,Tom,Dona and Jerald,
Susannah was incredibly blessed to have such a loving, devoted family. Her nine years were full of the love of her family. She found joy in situations few of us could have. I will always remember her--a little angel who was full of mischief and curiosity. I loved coming to do her PT with her--walking outside and counting pumpkins at Halloween and Santas at Christmas around the neighborhood. I always left with a huge appreciation of her strength and spirit.
Her signature laugh/chuckle that represented her sense of humor and her ability to relate to all that was happening around her were so much a part of her. I loved having Madeline "help" during our sessions--and Susannah lit up anytime big sis was included. My thoughts and prayers are with you. She was an amazing little girl.

We each carry within us a living part of Susannah's Story, which continues to unfold high above earthly limitations.

Though very heavy at this time, my heart is joyful to be a part of this story.

God holds you!

And so it is, sadness so deep and heavy that our hearts break, yet again. In our brokeness we find unembarrassed love. We care, we touch, we hug, we cry, we love....our girls teach us this. Susannah will always have a piece of our hearts. I, for one, cannot think of a more special, little person to give a piece of my heart to. We love you. We are thinking of you. We are praying for you. May the love and support of so many offer at least a bit of comfort in so trying a time. With love,

Hey guys, I think I do better at writing than I do talking. We just want you to know, as everyone else signing has said, how beautiful and special Susannah AND your family is. You've all been challenged in ways most of us couldn't even imagine handling. Yet, you set the standard for all of us. Susannah, by always smiling and pushing right past any road blocks to find a way to bop to her music with a twinkle in her eye. Madeline, by always being so patient and gentle and PROUD of her little sis. Amy and Klane, by always facing each new challenge with courage and a resolve to fight for what is best for Susannah and her sister. We've all taken it in with admiration and awe. Some of us from a distance, and some of us up front in the passenger seat, but nonetheless, we are all better people to have Susannah and her family in our lives. These are hard times. The hardest ever, but I know Susannah loves you all so much that she will give you 100% of a fight for as long as she can. Gosh, she's in our hearts...today and forever.

Susannah, Madeline, Amy and Klane,

Susannah's teacher, Cindy, sent your latest posting to me and it was such a beautiful thing to read. Madeline obviously has wonderful ideas and I LOVE that art projects were a part of the party! When people come to my house for dinner, we always do something arty, whether it is decorating pumpkins, decorating a cake, painting flowerpots, making Christmas decorations, or some such thing. It brings us together more and more.

It is true that Susannah touches those who have not even yet met her, as have many angels here on earth. Thanks for sharing her with me and my prayers continue for all of you. It is clear that you will be all right, because of the great love that surrounds you as a family, and what a wonderful sign of hope that is!

Hey Guys,

Still praying very very hard! I had to laugh at myself. I never put together that I have another friend who was in the PICU at the same time Miss Susannah. He is now on the cardio unit(he has DMD) but I am sure you both bumped into each other a few times in the PICU. What a small world!!! So if you see the Stark family give them a hug from me.

Remember I am always thinking about you and praying very hard!

Love and Big Hugs,

Oh my goodness- I'm sorry I didn't check here sooner! SO good to get caught up on Sis' recovery. Sounds like she's continuing to "do her thing!" Great news on the good blood counts and the decreased vent settings! Sorry about the bleeding polyps and clogged dialysis line- sounded VERY eventful. UGH. Will continue to stay posted. Miss you all and love you!!! Go, Sis!

I just read the update and feel really bad it's been sooo long since we've seen you or checked in on Susannah. Our family will keep you in our thoughts and prayers! If Madeline ever needs a break - send her our way there are at least 5 girl cousins her age and we have extra bedrooms! We would all love to spend some time with her. Hello to all the White family. I've read the last two entries several times over the past few days and realize that things have been more of a roller coaster than you let it sound. That GI bleed alone must have been frightening. I keep going over the events in my mind and know that my first wish for you all is a stable medical situation. Thinking of you, Love JJ in SD.

Hi!

I am a friend of Cindy Beck and she keeps our church updated on Susannah's condition. She is in my prayers daily, and I often ask Cindy for updates, so she sent me to this site. I hope you don't mind.

What darling girls you have and what a little fighter Susannah is! Not many kids could come through all of this so well!

My prayers continue, of course.

Those baby steps are good news. The whole polyp situation must have been a bit stressful...but the upside is that you were able to figure out some other issues they might have been causing. Kudos to Madeline for donating to Locks of Love! I loved the visiting pedicurist idea! Why didn't I think of that?!
Slowly but surely, Susannah is shining through! Prayers continue to flow!

Hello Dr and Mrs White:
Dr White I don't know if you will remember me but I was at the Seattle LPA Convention during the MPS Morquio Meeting. I mentioned then that I have been following Susannah's progress via the Caring Bridge page for many years. In the past year or so I had not checked it very often because there were never any updates. For some reason last week I decided to check it and was greatly surprised and saddened to read of what you all have been going through with Susannah in the last 10 or 11 months. I myself spent alot of time at Children's in my childhood and have nothing but good memories of my times there (I am assuming that is where she is). I think it, along with UW, which is where I go now, is one of the best and I hope you are finding it to be that way as well. It sure sounds like it from your journal enteries. As you may recall I have a trach and a bi-pap which I am on 24/7 now. I enjoyed reading how Susannah tolerated the bi-pap so well despite her problems with other types of respiratory intervention and I LOVED the nickname Snuffey AKA Snuffelupagus! That fits it so perfectly!!! It is hard to know what will happen to Sussanah in the future but if a trach or Bi-Pap need comes up again I hope you will contact me with any questions or need for support. It has been 7 years now since my trach was placed which absolutely amazes me and this offer of support is something I offer to everyone who might need it because I know from experience that there is a great need to have support from people other than just medical people no matter how great they may be. Unfortunatly that support is hard to find and so I have had to turn to the computer to find it. I have found wonderful help through Yahoo groups via groups for those with dwarfism, trachs and bi-pap/vents. It is amazing what is out there if one knows how and where to look for it.
Take care of yourselves and know that my prayers and well wishes are with you!

Oh Klane and Amy I am so sorry that you have been going through this horrible time for so long. I talked to Mel the other week and she mentioned that Susannah was sick but I had NOOOOO idea that she was in the PICU. Your updates are so calm. I can't imagine that that is the way you are really feeling. I hope things will continue to resolve themselves and she will continue to heal even if it is in baby steps. Please keep the updates coming. Now that I know, I will check in much more often and be praying for you. Lots of love, Anne

Invites for the wedding go out next month, so be anticipating yours :) It's September 21 in St. Paul (I really hope you can make it). Eight years old... that is CRAZY! Where has the time gone? Give the girls huge hugs and kisses for me!
