SULLY B.

Thanks to all who have patiently continued to drop by and check up on Sully even though we don't update this site often. Now that Sully is returning to the hospital, I will try my best to update you below on how he is and how his days counting up to Christmas are going. Thanks again for droppin' by and hope you're having a FANTASTIC holiday season!!

Journal

Sunday, December 23, 2007 12:05 AM CST

Another day dawns in the hospital, cloudy outside and a little misty in our hearts as well.

There was protracted debate about discharge, the cardio doc leaning toward holding Sully another day. In the end he left it up to Sully, Mr. Indirect, himself ("I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.")!

Sully's typical response to any question is, "I don't know."

It took some subtle mom-style coaching to get Sully to answer in the positive, so we are going home s ometime this date.

Sully's anti-coagulation is right on target, now, but his hematocrit dropped more since yesterday (30) as did his hemoglobin (10).

Chiefly, he is totally washed out, pale and without energy. On the up side, he has appetite and has been socking away the pudding, applesauce, chocolate milk, and Ensure.

If the day progresses at the normal hospital pace, we may still not get home till past supper, but at least we will be home for Christmas.

I believe this will be the third Dec. 23rd discharge we've undergone through the years. They really do try to get kids home for the holidays but this year, the staff tells me the inn will be full, so think of the kiddos and their families who will not be home for the holidays.

Now before the pharmacy closes I must go pick up the liquid iron supplement Sully was prescribed, then begin schlupping our stuff to the car so my arms will be free when it is time to schlupp the no-longer-so-little bundle of boy, himself.

Being here brings to mind many other discharge days down through the years -- always tiring but joy-filled occasions, yet bittersweet as well, as we wheel past the rooms of other children (and their weary families) who must stay behind.

Though I've little doubt there will be more hospital stays for Sullivan Bard, this one, at least, is coming to a close.

Merry Christmas.
