Joey's Journey

This is a picture of Joey and his donor, Kim

Welcome to Joey Tomlinson's Web Page. It has been

provided to keep all of our friends and family updated about Joey. Joey was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia on 3/20/01. Unfortunately he relapsed in the CNS on 4/26/02. He had a Matched Unrelated Stem Cell Transplant on August 28th, 2002.

***THANK YOU TO JOEY'S DONOR, KIM."

It certainly has been a long time since my last update - I have no idea where the time goes. Joey has been doing pretty well. He is in the ninth grade now and doing quite well in school. He had a very rough December with two bouts of pneumonia and a stomach virus. He is still giving himself shots of growth hormone and is growing very slowly. In January he was named Student of the MOnth for the Ninth grade class. Can't beat that! He decided to give swimming for the high school a try. It was great seeing him back in the water again. A good friend of ours is the head coach(Todd Bauer) and I am the assistant. How great is that - Now I get to spend every afternoon with both Bobby and Joey and a fantastic group of hard working youn men. We had a great season and won our 10th League title in a row. Joey is currently playing tennis for the high school and seems to be enjoying that too. Of course now that the weather is changing he is starting to wish for North Carolina - I agree with him. On the health front he is doing well but still suffer froms overall fatigue. We try and make sure he gets plenty of rest and eats well. He is such a trooper and Bob and I are very proud of everything that he does.
Alex has been having a fantastic sophomore year at Wagner College. Her swimming season ended in February with her being named All-Conference in three different events. She was also named All-Academic for the Northeast Conference. She is currently starting for the Wagner Water polo team and is playing really well. She received the Rose Accettola Scholar Award and was inducted into the Biology Honor Society. She is an amazing young lady with a tremendous work ethic. I guess you know how proud Bob and I are of her and also of Bobby.
Bobby is a senior and loving every minute of it. He was a Captain for the water polo team at Souderton and the team finished third in the state. Bobby was named as a member of the All-Pennsylvania State team. The he decided that he was going to swim and was named as a Captain for the swim team too. He swam many events for the team and was a solid point getter and performer. It was during his swimming season that he found out that he received a four year scholarship to Penn State from the Army ROTC. He has decided to accept this award and will be attending Penn State in the Fall with a major in Kinesiology. We are actually going up to Penn State this weekend to meet with the Leaders of ROTC and give a Bobby a chance to take all his entrance exams and physical tests. Although this is scary for a parent we decided that Bobby needed to make his own decision and we presented him with all the pros and cons and allowed him to make his own decision. He has definitely grown into a fine young man.
Bob is doing well considering all his kids are leaving. Still working long hours and trying to accomodate our crazy schedules. Much of our spare time(what little there is) is spent following the kids around the country for all of their activities. Wouldn't trade it for anything!!
The final thing I would like to address. The boy's swim team is holding a community service event to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand. I'm sure everyone is aware that this charity raises money for childhood cancer research. Joey and I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Alex Scott and her family when we were patients at CHOP. She was an incredible little girl and our swim team is extremely proud to support this cause. We designed a website and will be taking secure donations through our site. Please find it in your heart to help us reach our goal. If you live in the Harleysville area feel free to stop by Walmart on May 19th. The address of the website is http://www.firstgiving.com/soudswim. PLease visit.

As always - spend time with your kids, laugh with them, love them and appreciate them.
Love, Barb
