Hi Heather!

Did I see you and your mom at Malisa's baby shower? As always, you all looked great. I realize it was an effort for you to get there, but it was fun to see you. How is Aly doing?

Know that you, Aly, your mom, and all the Mito maidens are in my thoughts daily. You have given me such a gift by getting to know you all. If any of you will be in Boston, please let me know.

With hugs and love,
Melissa

We huddle by the fire on this bitter cold night,
Enjoying hot cocoa by the warm fire light.

While the smells of a feast fill this rickety old shack,
Icy winds whistle as they dance through the cracks.
Surrounded with blankets, sweet carols we sing,
Happily awaiting what this Christmas will bring.

You won't find any presents 'neath our skimpy tree.
Ornaments are hand-made and so is our wreath.
Under limp mistletoe, mom gives dad a kiss,

Atmosphere of joy and love

Merry Christmas to all of you.
Everyone here at our house is thinking of you.
Remember Christ loves you, no matter your worth.
Revel in the illuminating joy of His birth.
Your love is the only gift He'll ever ask.

Celebrate His life and in His light you'll bask.
Holiday giving and the spread of good cheer,
Really is something we could keep up all year.
Imagine a world where it was Christmas each day,
Sounds hard to do, but it could be that way.
This is our Christmas wish for all of you tonight--
May His warmth surround you like a blanket of light.
All your wishes be granted with His blessings of love,
Sent special delivery from the Angels above.

It's the time of year when we're reminded to give thanks.
Instead of waiting until next year to be reminded,
Let's make every day one of thanksgiving;
After all, each day is a unique gift.
So, give a hug for no reason;
Say I love you, just because;
Share a smile with a stranger;
Take the time to count your blessings;
Don't take anything or anyone for granted;
And end each day with no regrets.
Thank you, my friends and family,
For sharing, caring, laughing and crying with me.
I'm truly blessed to have each and every one of you in my life
And I am thankful you have allowed me
To be a part of yours.
May you and yours have a safe and memorable Thanksgiving.

Hello Heather Girl,

I'm so bummed that I didn't get to meet up with you and Aly on my way home, but I totally understand how hard it is when you have stuff planned back to back two days in a row. I'm just glad you were up to doing those activities, and that you are physically able to attend the conferences you are. It was great to get to meet Malisa in person, and everything worked out well, because I think both she and I were pretty exhausted afterward with all of our talking. :-) I feel asleep in the van as we were driving away. Well I know these wishes are belated, but I hope you had a great holiday weekend!

Love,
Bonnie

Hi Heather,

Thinking of you and hoping and praying that all went well and that you are recovering from the surgery. I hope to hear that you are home soon without any complications from the surgery or any major movement problems. I think of you often and I was wondering if you plan on going to see Dr. Cohen in Philly on August 10th? If so I hope to be there too!! Maybe we can go together, that would be fun.!! And it would give us time to catch up on things. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Love and hugs,

Hi Heather,

I found you through Malisa. We have some similar symptoms and I just thought I'd stop by and say hello. I'm in the process of trying to get evaluated for mitochondrial disease. I have gastroparesis, small bowel dysmotility and generalized dystonia/movement disorders as well as peripheral neuropathy and fibromyalgia.

I hope you are doing as well as you can be. I have been on TPN for about 8 months and I'm doing pretty well with it. I would like to have a central line, but so far have just had PICCs.

Take care and I'd love to hear from you if you have the chance.

Hi Heather,

I was just checking in with everyone. Throughout the years we have made so many CB friends. I found this poem and thought it was perfect.

The Power of Friends

Everyone knows of the power of friends,
The terrific result, when everything blends.
When people have friends, they don’t stand alone;
Friends always help, when you face the unknown.

Friends give you courage to face problems untold,
So the love of a friend can help make you bold.
They can help you to live a much richer life,
So your every day living will be less filled with strife.

Thanks for being my friend!

Hi Heather,

I know it has been awhile since I visited your site or emailed you but please know that you were always in my thoughts and prayers. I hope your trip to Boston went well and that your Dad did fine flying in the small plane that angel Flight uses to transport us to Boston. Funny thing is that if I am with someone and they get sick and throw up I automaticly get sick and throw up myself. I know it is gross!! Please email me when you have a chance and let me know how things are going with you. What kind of Mastiff did your friend get bit by? Old English, Neo, or Bull Mastiff? Sorry that she is going through so much. You stated that the dog was just rescued by its owners, so I would imagine that it was either lost or they rescued the dog back from someone who they sold him/her to. It is very unusual for an Old Englsih Mastiff to bit anyone unless it was abused, neglected, kicked around, or maybe it is in pain and sick. Either way I hope your friend gets better soon. I know how horrible those rabie shots are, I have been through them myself back in 1991 when I was attacked by a stray cat and got bit really bad. The shots go by the weight of the person, so in my case I was happy for the first time in my life that I weighed in just under 100 lbs. Poor hubby had a lot more shots to get then me. LOL!!!

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers my friend. We really must get togetehr this summer and hang out for an afternoon.

Love and hugs,
Ann-Marie

I was reading back through some of your beginning posts. You had EBV for a year?!??! How did you get through it?!?! I've only had it for two months, and I was ready to be done six weeks ago! How did you finally get it to go away? I just can't get over that you dealt with it for so long. It just reinforces my impression of you as such a strong person. You rock!

I hope all goes well with your new line placement. I am glad you are back on the antibiotics until then, that is really important.
Let me know when you are back in Boston seeing Dr Korson, I would love to meet up with you.
As for your new years resolution about writing more in CB guestbooks...dont worry. I think everyone knows that we all are so busy trying to stay healthy, it is hard to do too much and try to conserve energy too. Glad you were in/out last week and NO inpatient stay. You are doing remarkable Heather. I sure hope January's procedure goes as well too. Is that planned outpatient? You will do great, I know it. Just wanted to wish you a very Happy, Healthy, 2008. You sure deserve it!

My goal is to get to "my sights" more often and leave messages when I physically can. Sometimes it's easier to read sites but not leave messages. I hope to change that in 2008.

Will bless you with His precious gifts
Of faith and hope and love,
Faith to make your life serene,
Hope to keep it bright,
And most of all, God's holy love
To be your guiding light.

Merry Christmas

Hey Heather,
Glad to hear your line surgery is being postponed given these symptoms you are having. Hopefully this temporary line will hold out a few weeks and get you through the holidays without needing another temporary line. AND...hoping to get to spend some time with you in the next few weeks. We'll have to keep our fingers crossed!
I miss you and love you lots!

Hi Heather,

A small poem to let you know that I'm thinking about you today! Keep hanging tough my special friends.

A Prayer For You

I said a prayer for you today
And I know God must have heard
I felt the answer in my heart
Although he spoke no word!
I didn't ask for wealth of fame
(I knew you wouldn't mind)
I asked him to send treasures
Of a far more lasting kind!
I asked that He'd be near you
At the start of each new day
To grant you health and blessings
And friends to share your way!
I asked for happiness for you
In all things great and small
But it was for His loving care
I prayed the most of all!

Heather,

I'm sorry I didn't know that you and your mom were coming to Boston the end of October. However, I'm sure that you both wanted to spend as little time here as was necessary.

I have followed your "ups" and "downs" through your Caringbridge page. I check up on all the "mito maidens" who I know--you, Malisa, Kristina, and Bonnie.

I am happy you have Aly and your parents who obviously love you as well as all your wonderful friends.

If I can ever do anything for you or your family while you are in Boston, please do not hesitate to ask.

Fondly,
Melissa

Hi Heather. This is Rina's mom, Stacy. Thanks for writing Rina on her CB site. Not only do you have things in common but we do as well-I am a speech therapist and have worked in 0-5 for almost 20 years. I love the little ones! I also am trained in SI and work closely with OT's. Glad things went well for you and were able to just stay outpatient

Hi Heather,

It was so good to get to meet you this week. It's the kind of thing that just makes dealing with all this medical stuff easier - to know I'm not the only one out there who deals with this stuff, walks around hooked up to a backpack, and to go beyond just knowing I'm not the only one but to be walking around in Boston with someone who has some of the same things as me!

I really hope that we can keep in touch and that you're recovering from your trip. And I look forward to getting to see you on your next trip to Boston!

Hi Heather,

I just wanted to stop by and say hi. If I don't do anything else, I get online just to check on you and some others I've grown to love and care about. Don't EVER think no one is reading. You are in my families hearts and mind. Trusting the clinic visits in Boston were enlightening and positive. Keep the faith and keep smiling.

Hi Heather,

You are such an inspiration to me. Last week I sang "Trust His Heart" in church because of certain circumstances in our lives and to hear you echo those same words in your lives challenges me that "when I don't understand, when I don't see His plan, when I can't trace His hand, TRUST HIS HEART!"

We serve an awesome God who continually reminds me of who He is through precious people like you.

May God bless you as richly as He does me through you!

Love and Prayers,

Hi, I am a mom of one (or two) kids with mito. Malisa has been such a wonderful support to me and I found your site from hers. I was reading about you and I am wondering if you would be able to do "consult OT" over the computer? It is a way that you could use all your great knowledge from the comfort of your home! My son, almost 11, was blessed with a great early intervention team! He was dx with autism made up of sensory integration disorder and processing issues. OT was awesome for him. My daughter, Natalie, has had some sensory issues that come and go. More importantly, right now is Natalie's class at school! They are WAY overstimulated!!!! I talked to the veteran teacher about sensory stuff she could have in her classroom and she is very open to it. If you would like, or are able to, I would love your input on this. Come and visit Natalie on her website (FYI- no one on that site knows about the possibility of Stephen being affected too.)
Thank you!! Nice to meet you!!

Hi, It is 8:30PM EST Friday October 5, 2007.
Heather is on her way home from hospital in a few minutes.
Her father is there now packing up her bags. Yes, she is glad to be coming home. The Triple Lumen went in fine.
She is weak with temps between 99.9 and 100.4; but okay to come home on 2 antibiotics.

Hi this is Aly and for some reason i can't seem to sign onto my sister's homepage so updating here....

My sister well, went in for triple lumen replacement this mornig with my dad and been there all day.

Here's the update....NOTHING was done as this temporary line was supposed be done in her room, bedside....well, decision was that it would be done in OR tomorrow morning instead.
so, still same procedure early tomrrow morning in OR no sedation but very very frustrated as spent a whole day in hospital when nothing really done.
escept does look like she may have infection so treating that...but otherwise just ready to get this done and hoping still come home by tomorrow later in day since done early enough to watch her for several hours.
no sedation so that is not issue; tests already done to check her infection status too so that's all i have for now

i will update you tomorrow and keep her and doc in prayers
thanks love
Aly, heather's sis

Oh Heather, it was so good to hear from you and it has meant so much to me to get your notes in my guest book! I will definitely be praying for Donna and her family, and you and Aly as you all deal with this loss. I always think of you often, in addition to the other maidens. It is so neat that we all have each other for support and each of you has meant so much to me personally. As you know, things are extremely tough for me right now, so I haven't been in contact as much as I'd like, but please know you are always in my thoughts and prayers.

All my love,

Hi Heather,

You know...I keep meaning to tell you how much your blanket has meant to me. It is the one thing that ALWAYS goes to the hospital with me and it is the one thing I am determined to have when I am sick at home. It has brought me a whole lot of comfort over the year, especially when it makes me think of the MAKAH crew. It has been a ridiculously hard summer, medically, but I just realized how thankful I was for your blanket and how much it meant to me that you sent it. Thinking of you and all the others so much. Why can't we all just be together...please please???

Love ya,
Ashley

Hello Heather,

I am sorry to hear you are ill. I am dealing with the same respitory stuff myself. In my last journal update I wrote a letter to the zookeeper asking him to please come and get the elephant that is sitting on my chest.

I hope that you feel better soon and can enjoy your plans. I know how often plans have to be canceled. I had to do that today. And it sucked.

At least you are at home, right? That was one heck of an inpatient stay.

Hey Heather. COngrats on the new niece. Even those little things are "accomplishments".. visiting the new babies. Hang in there.. I know how frustrating it can be to "return to baseline" or just to start to feel better... took me longer then expected too... Let us know if you ever want visitors.. M and I have talked about driving up to visit you and your sister when the four of us all feel up to it! Hang in there. I will keep you in my prayers that you can reach for that doctorates next semester. Also trying to do these online courses to move up.. frustrating.. Thinking of you.

Hi Heather,

I just read your journal. I am so sorry that you are suffering so. You are surely a beautiful person from inside out. I am keeping you in my prayers each day. My prayer for you is total health restoration. God bless you and your family as you make this unpleasant journey. God never promised that we would not go through perilous times, but he did promise he would bring us through. Just like Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego . He was in the fire and brought them though without the smell of smoke! He will do it for you too! Keep he faith.

Hey you,
What a week you've had with that abscess!!! Seriously---I can't even imagine how much of a toll it's taking on you.

I checked out the website for Musikfest and it looks pretty cool. They have some really well known singers. Dave and I are hoping to go to the Lights of Liberty show in Philly tomorrow at Independence Hall with some friends. Hoping it doesn't wear me out. I have a big week ahead.

When you're feeling better, let me know and we'll have to make plans to get together. I miss you.

Hi Heather,
I just had a wonderful visit with Malisa (check out her CB page!) and heard so many wonderful things about you. I therefore, decided to check out your site, and see if there was an update as to how U are doing....well what do you know...sure enough there was a VERY recent one! I guess U knew that I was coming to check it out ...lol!

I'm sorry to hear about all your teeth trouble...I know that toothaches are the worst. The dentist chair is actually my worst place in the whole world to be. I seriously would rather be having surgery than sit in a dentist chair. I'm happy though, that they we're able to find out a reason for all your pain and possibly fever.I hope U feel better soon!

I just wanted to let you know how hard it is for me to hear all that you must go through on a daily basis. It hurts me to see that such a good person must endure so much pain. I am, however, very inspired by your courage and determination to go on. I want you to know that I will always B here for you,...and i'm praying faithfully for you as well.
Warm and gentle hugs,
Bayla

Hi Heather,

Malisa visited Boston the week before the 4th. It was wonderful seeing her and meeting Dave. I missed you, Kristina, and Ashley and remembered last year you celebrating your birthday with them. Happy belated birthday. You came home on my birthday this year - it was such a gift. But when Malisa was visiting, she told me you had to go back to the hospital which made us all sad as there is no place like home.

You are all in my prayers and my church's prayers. I think of you often and wish I could take some of the pain away. I read all of your bridge sites weekly.

Gentle hugs to you and your sister,

It has been a long time since I signed the guest book though I check in often to read how things have been going for you. I am sorry for all of the downs and thank God for the few and small 'ups' you've had. So glad you're home. I found this and thought it appropriate for you at this time:

Hi Aly and Heather,
Although it is sooo disappointing not to have Heather at home for Easter, I hope that your family has a special day with her at the hospital. We are moving Bonnie to the new house on Saturday, so I'm imagining that Easter will be a day of recuperation. She hasn't been out of her bed for 3 or 4 weeks now, so it will be exciting to get her outside!
We think of you and your family often, and pray that God's sustaining grace will carry you through these hard times.

Hi Heather,
Just wanted to say hi on here to let you know I am thinking of you. I put the picture of the two of us before my commitment ceremony on my website and it makes me miss those days when we were healthy enough to do stuff like that. I am so glad you were my maid of honor and we got to do all the fun stuff girls do before their weddings. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your friendship and how much I love you.

I'm counting on both of us being well enough to at least get to SEE eachother this summer. We have to have more of our "girl time"!

Hope things are better this week.....Praying for you.

Hi Heather,
Just stopping by to tell you that we are still praying for you - that you will soon be heading home. We are too well aquainted with the terribly long hospital visits....and they are not fun. We are still getting our next home ready for Bonnie. We thought we'd be moved in by now, but there was a lot of work to be done (there is still no floor, sinks, toilets, or other necessities).
We pray you get home for Easter - our best to your family too.

Hi Heather,

Happy St. Patricks Day!! Corned Beef and Cabbage and Irish Soda Bread, anyone??? Hehehe!! I married an Irishman, so I celebrate the day. Amazing isn't it, that on Valentine's Day we had an ice and snow storm and on St. Patty's Day we had a snow storm. I sure hope this is the last snow storm of the year for us. I don't have any snow boots, so I don't go out in the snow. Our dog Lucy would love it if I could go out and play and throw some snow balls at her, but no boots I told her!!! heheheeh

Thanks for the updates Aly, and I hope that you are doing well too!! Praying for the whole family.

Hi Heather,

Sorry to hear that you are still in the hospital and having trouble with drawing the blood back from the one line. I hope the permanent line will be better. I think about you all the time, I check your site everyday, even though I don't always leave a message you are still in my thoughts.

I am glad you had some sister time this week. It's nice to spend quality time with your sister. Alyson loves you very much and I know you love her just as much!! I am praying for you, Alyson, your parents, your doggies, and poor little Milo who went flying through the air this morning when Alyson stretched out her legs while sleeping. Poor kitty!! I can imagine how much your animals miss you. I know that when I am gone even for a short time they go crazy when I walk back in the house, like they haven't seen me in years!!! LOL!! Gotta Love them!! Unconditional love, no questions asked.

I went down to HUP this past Tuesday to see my Endo, who did a needle biopsy on my Thyroid. They believe I have Thyroid Cancer. It took them three times with the needle to get enough cells to diagnose me. The Pathologist said it is "Suspicious". I am quite sure it is cancer. I am not sure if I am ready or even able to fight another disease. I pray that God will give me the strength to do so, but I am just not sure i can do it. I am scared to death.

Thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers. I love you and miss you!! Thank you Alyson for keeping us up to date on Heather!!

Love and hugs,
Ann-Marie

P.S. Does Reid from Nutrishare have any suggestions to help keep you infection free?? I love that Home Infusion Company. They have helped me with so much lately.

Just stopping by to say Hi and to let you know that I think of you often. I just wish I wasn't so sick myself, I could visit you once in awhile. Last time I was in the area I was sick with bronchitis and didn't want to give it to you. I emailed you last week, thought maybe you had a laptop at the hospital with you, but didn't receive anything back so I guess you don't have a laptop with you. Sorry you missed your appt. with the MDA Neuro, hopefully she will be able to squeeze you in soon. Thinking about you always and keeping you in my prayers. Hope you are home soon. Heather,

Doing the happy dance for you!! although my Happy dance probably looks funny to most, but at least I am trying!! hehehe I will have to show you someday exactly what it looks like!!

I am thrilled to hear that you are going into a regular room and are out of ICU. A baby step but a miracle in itself. I am not feeling real good myself but as soon as I am I will be coming to visit you. If there is anything that I can bring you please have either your Mom or sister email me or call me and I will pick it up on my way to see you. I miss you and I am sure you will be much happier in a regular room where you can have more visitors. I pray for you each and every day and hope that those tremors don't act up while your PCP is away!! God Bless you

Aly I wish I could give you a big hug. It's hard when someone so close to you is sick. I know you wish you could take her place or take away some of the sickness. That's all normal. Don't ever feel like you have let your sister down. Even when you are not physically there your spiritual bond is so tight Heather always feels you near her. Heather has been going through a lot lately and you and your family have been suffering through it with her. Heather couldn't have a better sister than you. I have 6 sisters and I think I would have to combine them all to get 1 Aly. Sometimes we get frustrated and discouraged and want to lose hope, but keep hoping and believing. There are a lot of people - including me - praying for Heather, you and your family. I've been to your page too so I know you have chronic illnesses too. So don't ever feel like you are not doing enough. Sometimes it just gets hard.Hang in there sweetie. Keep supporting and loving your sister.

Heather,
Just wanted to stop by to let you know I am thinking and praying for you alot lately. I do hope you can get out of that ICU and the hospital as soon as possible. I hate you have to spend the holidays there and hope that the new yr brings better time (less club med stays!) Merry christmas and love and hugs.

Heather,

Sorry to hear that you are still in ICU. You have one fantastic sister who would move the world for you if it meant making you better. You are her soul-mate and she loves you dearly, it shows in her writing. You are lucky to have such a loving and caring sister.

I am sorry you are having such a rough time lately. I pray that your foot heals quickly and that you can come home soon. I pray for you daily but I do know that the final decision (whether you come home for Christmas or not) is up to God, for he knows what is best for you and your overall health.

You might not make it home for Christmas, but you can celebrate the Birth of Christ anywhere, yes even in the Hospital. Please know that I miss you and love you and hope that you will be home soon. As soon as you get out of ICU I will ocme and visit you.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy Healthy New Year!! 2007 has got to be better than 2006!! No more Club Med in 2007, okay???

Love, hugs and prayers,
Ann-Marie

We're praying that things will start going better right now, but especially in time for Christmas.

Tell Miss Sharon that you appreciate the cyber hug, but what she really needs to do is come and get you out of that place - her success rate in making things happen is not really clear, but I happen to know that doctors remember her "advice" for a long time.

Happy Thanksgiving Heather! I'm sorry you have to celebrate inpatient; I've totally been there and while you can usually find a way to celebrate it's just not the same. So many of us are struggling right now and I'm so sad that you're included in that group. The one good thing is that we have each other for support and friendship, and that is one of the things that I am thankful for this year. This group of us mito girls has really helped me; I've often felt like giving up and alone, and while I dislike that there are others like you suffering I am grateful we have each other. I hope your day is more pleasant than most, and know that I'm thinking about you and praying for you. My mom reads me everyone's updates since I'm usually not feeling well enough to. Keep fighting!

Love and hugs,
Bonnie

Hi Aly,

Any news on Heather? How is she doing? I hope the sedation is helping to control her tremors. Will she be home for Thanksgiving? I sure hope so. Please let her know that I am thinking of her and praying for her too, as well as you and your whole family. I know it is hard to see your sister suffer so much from this disease. I wish you and your whole family a Very Happy Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving is:
A day to share with friends, family and strangers, A day to pray, A day to share, A day to show our Faith and thank the Lord for being in our lives, and a day for Blessings and to give Thanks!!

Malisa, Heather, and Kristina,
I am posting the same message in each of your guestbooks to save on energy and to let you know that even though I have been pretty "absent" lately, I am still checking up on you. I was struck by the fact that Malisa, Kristina, and Bonnie have all written this week about how much things have changed from a year ago. I have been struggling with that issue for the past month and the realization of it, and to then find all three of you writing out on your sites the exact thoughts that are going through my head, brought tears of sadness and relief to my eyes...sad that we are all in this together, and relief that I have incredible friends that understand exactly what I am going through.

What happened this past year?? Didn't someone write in the journal that 2006 was supposed to be a good year, and "no admits in 2006"? I also think of that picture of us STANDING in front of the Christmas tree and where this past year went healthwise. I owe you all calls and emails and I am trying to get back on track with my energy (and attitude), but it has been a struggle. Lots of tough changes here too. Love you all!

I'm one of Aly's friends. I'm another one of the co.onic inertia total colectomy chicks. I just wanted to stop by and say that I am keeping you in my prayers. Aly said you hadn't been feeling well and I hope things improve for you real soon!

Hugs,

I can't believe they ordered the wrong kit, well, actually I can believe it. If it wasn't for the patient taking control half of the things we need to get done would NEVER get done!! Sorry you had to step up and do the doctors job, but at least now you will get the right kit.

Sorry to hear your Mom needs tubes in her ears. And that was so kind of her to cancel her surgery in order to take you to the ER to have your kit repaired, but that is what Mom's do !! :-)

Keeping you in my prayers. Hope you are feeling better!!
Love and hugs,

Hey Heather- It is now Sunday afternoon so I hope that you are now home with a new and working double lumen line. You have been on my mind a lot lately. I hope that this week is good for you and that your health will improve so you can be infection free. You continue to be in my prayers.

Hi Heather,

Glad to hear that you found the Y tubing to help when you need to infuse 2 meds at once. I hope you are feeling better and I hope the line repair kit works. Good Luck with the repair and please try not to have to stay overnight, okay??

Keeping you in my prayers and thoughts, tell your sister I said Hi.

Hope you feel better soon!! God Bless you!!

Heather,

I am glad that you found the Y-connector thing, and that you got the repair kit. You sure are going through a lot with these danged infections... wish you could get a break for a while.

I have been having a lot of problems recovering from a recent bout of rhabdo, trying to hang in there and claw my way out from under this metabolic fog. Labs are still a little funny, but mostly I just don't feel good. I have a lot of appointments coming up (nephrology on Monday, metabolic guy on Tuesday, PCP on the 16th, pain clinic on the 31st), so hopefully we can get something figured out. I'm waiting for insurance approval to get a biopsy in Atlanta, too.

One thing that has helped is getting D10 when I am feeling sick. We have talked about doing a port so I can do that at home, but right now we are holding off.

Reading about all of the infections you guys keep getting makes me not want to mess with central venous access at all!

Anyway, I hope your line gets fixed and things start to get back to normal for you. Sorry you are having such a rough time. Mito sucks...

Hi Heather,

Sorry you are having so many difficulties with your lines. I also am experiencing symptoms when being off my TPN for a period of time. I am wondering if they are going to increase my time, I hope not. Hope your infection clears up real soon and you stay out of "Club Med"

Thanks for mentioning me on your site, that was very kind of you. You are in my thoughts and prayers. How is your sister doing?

Hi Heather...sorry you blew your line...been there done that...I'm curious though if you normally run vanco and tpn at the same time but from different ports I would assume they are compatible...why not run them through a double or triple port hub. I too have the issue with being off tpn for any period. Sometimes even changing bags is too long if I don't time things correctly. I've used hubs in the hospital and at home for this very reason before I had a triple lumen put in that is.
I hope you get it worked out and that the vanco will wipe this infection out totally! You are in my daily prayers!

Hi Heather,

Sorry to hear that you are dealing with yet another infection. They really rot, don't they?? I heard you had to cancel your appt. with Reid. I missed him too. Poor guy came to see us and neither of us got to see him. I hope and pray that you start feeling better soon and that the antibiotics start to work quickly and kick that infection right in the butt!! hehehe

I also am not feeling well at all. My temp. is up close to 100.0 and I am also experiencing the chills, sweats, shortness of breath, etc.. I am so fatigued that I can't even walk more than a few steps without having to go back to bed. I hate this part of the disease/or infection.

Thinking of you always and keeping you in my prayers.

Wow, pretty good getting out in just 24 hours. I usually bleed for the first week and require daily or 2xdaily dressing changes because of all the blood and lymph fluid. And yes, I've definitely found that with the harder the placement the more the blood and fluids.

In addition to the steroids are they giving you anything specifically for the dystonia and myoclonus post-surgery? My seizure doc came up with a novel idea which has worked wonders for me. In addition to my seizure meds he has Rxd Klonopin wafers prn at any time there is an increase in my dystonia or jerks. This stuff has been incredible and I only need to take it when needed. Of course YMMV, but it might be worth checking out.

Well, now that I've rambled I will let you know that I pray for you daily. Peace.

Heather,

I'm glad that you were able to get out of the hospital so quickly! I hope you are feeling better today and that you can manage to find a balance between overdoing it and being bored out of your skull. I have been struggling with that myself lately... do I get out and do something with my friends and risk paying for it later, or do I sit on my butt and take care of my body but get bored and grumpy?

I got a chance to read through a lot of the old posts on this page today, and it certainly sounds like you've been through a lot. One thing that shows through, though, is your strength despite all the hard stuff.

Anyway, I should get going, but I just wanted to say hi and send some words of encouragement as you recover from your procedure and the effects of the anesthesia.

I was up taking my anti rejection meds and was checking on CB sites. Good to see you updating again. I am sorry to hear of your troubles with infections, lines, rashes and bumps and pain. Just doesnt seem like you get a break. Malisa and I are trying to find a time to get together with our hubbys. The three of us should get together some weekend. Once I am allowed to drive a little further...still restricted because of the transplant. THey dont want the steering wheel damaging anything if I get in an accident. SO I am only doing short distances. Well, I continue to keep you and your sister in my prayers. I hope the two of you can find some answers that you need. Heather, Hi! I hope your doctors listen to you and can get this infection under control. It has certainly been brewing there for awhile. As for ideas on an immunologist . . . The one I saw for the first time last week is great. So, now you just have to come out to Iowa for immunology and then we can go onto Boston together.
:-) Could we get into a lot of trouble (fun trouble, of course) doing this or what? :-)

Hi Heather, I found your web site through Malisa's and share the same boston mito doc. Just wanted to say that I also have immune deficiency. After a poor experience with a non-mito-educated immunologist, (long story) I now see a hematologist. Since last fall I have received IGg IV's every four weeks and it has made a HUGE difference in the number of things I catch. On antibiotics about 10 times in the year before IV's, and only once in the last year. So don't overlook a hematologist if you can't find an immunologist who is knowledgeable.
Hope you find treatment just as helpful!! Best Wishes, Marjette

Heather, I am so glad you had a good birthday and were out of the hospital for it! I am glad we were able to celebrate with you in Boston. I LOVED the look on your face the whole night. Your smile was endless! My sides also hurt from laughing in the limo! Thank you so much for your friendship. It means the world to me!

Hi Heather,
I just wanted to stop in and wish you Happy Birthday (again!). It was SO much fun surprising you on Friday night. I think my sides hurt, too, for awhile afterwards just b/c we were laughing so hard all night. It was so great to have a "girls' night out" to celebrate your birthday and I am still so happy that we pulled it off without you knowing about it! SOO much fun!! Love ya lots!

Just a note to let you know that everyone made it to Boston, but it was an eventful 24 hours...The plane was put into the hands of Heather to fly (briefly), and then due to weather, they had to land at an unplanned airport an hour or so outside of Boston. Their pilot was trying to help them find a way to get from the airport to Boston, and after several hours of trying to figure this out, Malisa and Heather opted to hitch a ride into Boston with two random naval cadet guys (Kristina and I could have KILLED them when we heard this!). After finally getting to the hotel around 10:30pm, the wild and crazy (yeah right...I don't even think we are CAPABLE of wild and crazy!) nature of the gals earned them a noise complaint in the hotel!! They had the "security man" knocking on their door to tell them another hotel guest had complained about the noise from the room. Apparently, this all-powerful "security man" also doubles as the hotel bellhop, because about twenty minutes later, the same man appeared at their door with their request for extra towels, without the security badge on this time. Hysterical! To then add to the excitement, the fire alarm went off throughout the entire hotel at 4:45am (just a false alarm). And that was just the first twelve hours of the trip!

Hi Heather,

I read this on a poster at our local Children's Hospital and thought of everyone living with the mito beast.

You have the strength to beat this,
You have the will to fight,
You have to win this battle,
You have a goal in sight.

You sometimes lose your balance,
You won't always feel your best,
You do what your doctors ask of you,
You let them do the rest.

You hold on to happy times,
You push the rest aside,
You smile and let the Lord lead you,
You know He is your guide!

In the book of Philippians 4:13 the Bible says, "I can do everything through him who gives me strength".

Hi all,
Just wanted to update with what I know about Heather.....

She's still inpatient. The pneumothorax in her lung (small hole) has closed up according to x-rays, although she is still having pain in that area. She is also getting sick again when her new (2 week old) line is flushed and they're looking into figuring out why this keeps happening to her.

Please keep her in your prayers.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Heather is still inpatient. She's doing much better when flushing her line since they removed it last Tuesday. However, when they placed her new line, they punctured a small hole in her lung. So, now she's trying to get better from that. Please continue to keep her in your prayers.

Her sister, Alyson, had surgery on Friday, which went well, but she ended up spiking a 101 degree temperature yesterday, so Heather is worried. Hi Sweetie,

I just want you to know how much I love you and to let you know that I think about you everyday and pray for you daily. I ask God everyday to please give you the strength to fight this battle that seems to be going on forever. Your strength, wisdom, and faith is so clear and I know that is what keeps you going in times of trouble. God loves you too and is gently holding you and is carrying you when things are too hard for you to handle. You are such an amazing friend. I am so sorry that you have to go through this, and I wish I could take all of the pain and suffering away for you, but I can't. They say that God only gives us what we can handle, but my friend I do believe that you have been through enough and it is time for a change!! I am asking God to take the pain from you and to make you new and whole once again. I ask God to have mercy on you.

God Bless you. If you need anything at all please let me know. If you are up to a visit call me or have your Mom call or email me. I don't want to bother you but would love to visit with you if you are up to visitors.

Love and Hugs,
Ann-Marie

Hi Heather,
I am here at the library getting my email. Just dropping you a line to let you know I enjoy our time together as your nurse and friend. You are a gift to this earth and fun to be with. Also, I am so glad you understand my humor. If we do not laugh about life, we waste it crying. When we fail OR our bodies fail us, God is faithful to us no matter what. Healing is as spiritual as it is physical. I believe "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger",,,I can attest to that, can you??? No Doubt! Utt, Oh, Gotta go! The computer time is limited at the library, so Never Give Up, Never Surrender! See you next weekend. If not, I will pray for your continued recovery. Have a good one! God Bless!

Hiya Heather,
Happy New Year! I did the temporary line thing too to get rid of infections. With ID help I was able to keep the temp line for close to 2 months. So far so good with my new Hickman...although I've had one visiting nurse with suspect technique... I sure hope this is an answer for you. I know how hard constant infections are on you. Hi Heather,
Glad to hear that you are feeling better and that you have returned to your baseline. PTL!! I am so happy that you were able to be there for Malisa at the most important time in her life. I wish I was able to be there, but I know if I canceled my surgery Malisa would have killed me!! LOL I really wanted to be there for her and to enjoy the day along with her and Dave. So you take care of yourself and I hope Dr. M was able to give you some answers to keep those nasty beasties away.!! Keeping you in my prayers and in my thoughts. Love and hugs, Ann-Marie

Ok ladies...we are ALL home now, at the same time...now STAY THAT WAY!!! hee hee....The one who can stay home the longest wins a prize, got it? Anyone want to bet who ends up in the hospital first (ok, nevermind...I don't want to jinx anyone).

Kristina, how about you and I move to PA and then Heather moves in closer to Philly? That way, when we are all admitted, we can party hard!! Oh my god...how entertaining would that be? I bet we would get ourselves kicked out of the hospital for our antics if we were all there at the same time!

We can all move in with Malisa and Dave right? I am sure they wouldn't mind us crashing in their condo right as they are about to embark on married life!

The dress for M's wedding sounds lovely. I am so excited b/c I will be there and I can't wait to see how beautiful you look in the dress.!! What an exciting time!!!

Hi Heather, best of luck with your latest line placement. I sure hope the anesthesiologists listen to you! My little Heather is coming home tomorrow. YAY! It's been almost 2 turbulent months. I'm hanging in there, trying to do the best I can with my new accessories. I'll give you a call some time this week, I learned a little more about my movement problems and it might be an easy enough thing to rule out for you. Take care, I'm saying a prayer for a smooth line change!

Glad you are still hanging in there at home! I said to Kristina recently that I felt like we are leading parallel lives and now I feel the same way with you. I am on iv levaquin and a gentamycin lock for the weird serratia I have. It seemed to make a difference after 24 hours and I hope it works for you. If the cultures are not negative next week, the port comes out....sooo hoping that DOESN'T happen!

I hope you are able to get your new line next week and that the surgery goes smoothly. I know what you mean by insurance issues, they really drain the energy out of you, don't they? Heather! It is so good to hear from you! I have missed reading your updates. I CAN'T BELIEVE that the hospital was giving you TPN with sulfites! God! How scary. You would think they would be more on top of things like that. Do the vitamins in your TPN give you a problem? I go into anaphylactic shock from vitamins and have never heard of anyone else with the same problem!

Hi Heather,

Stopping by to say Hello My Friend. I hope you are feeling a little better. Sounds like it will be a long road back to your baseline. I hope and pray to God everyday for you, I ask that he wrap his loving arms around you and protect you from all things bad, and that he continues to guide the doctors and nurses who are caring for you and give them the support and knowledge they need to cure you of those horrible movements. I know what you are going through since I too have them, although not nearly as bad as yours(Thank You God) and I beg you Lord to please make these movements cease and never return for Heather. They are so very draining and take so much out of her. Please Bless her and stay close by her and carry her when times are too tough. I love you Heather. Hang in there. God Bless You!!! Heather, I have been thinking of you every day!! I told Malisa that what the two of you have gone through with things related to your central lines has seriously made me even more hesitant to get one!

I hope that things start to turn around for you soon. Malisa and I will miss you here in Boston! Think about the fun (i.e. TROUBLE) that you, me, Kristina, and Malisa could get in to if we were all in the same room together at one time...hee hee!!

Hi Heather,

So sorry to read the update that your sister wrote. I was so hoping that you were better and home by now. I am sorry that the movements are getting worse and that you are having such a difficult time.

I pray that God will wrap his loving arms around you and comfort you and heal you from within. I pray that you get a miracle and the movements stop.

I am here for you if you need me. If you are up to another visit let me know and I will arrange to come and visit with you. And I will bring you anything you want to eat. Something special that you can't get at the hospital.

Love,Ann-Marie

Hi Heather,

It was such a joy to finally meet you today. I only wish that we could have met at Starbucks and chatted over coffee instead of in the hospital. But I am still thrilled that I was feeling well enough to visit with you today. I am sorry that I missed your Birthday and that you were in Club Med for your special day.

Heather you are as sweet, kind, caring and compassionate as I knew you would be. I hope we can all get together sometime in the next month or so and hang out.!! That will be alot of fun. If you need anything at all, just give me a call and I will do whatever I can to help you. I know it must be hard right now without your Mom or sister with you, so if you need company, or just someone to listen to you call me. I can make you laugh too, just ask Malisa!! hehehe!!!

Keeping you in my thoughts and praying to God for him to lay his healing hands on your weak body and give you the miracle you so deserve. Hugs and Love,

Sorry to hear you have to get a new line, but hopefully you'll feel better and hopefully the new one will last a long time. hey Heather! Thanks so much for signing my guestbook! I hope everything goes well with your line stuff-- that must be so frustrating. So this is really incredibly crazy, like seriously a small world. When I saw where you were from, omg, I just started laughing. My entire extended family lives in Allentown/Macungie and are treated at Lehigh Valley. We go up three times a year. That is just too funny! Well I hope you have a great week, and hope you get to feeling better- and SOON! :)

Hi Heather, thanks for finding my CB site. So far so good with the second PICC. Right now the plan is for it to stay in for about 3 months and see how I tolerate the extra hydration. Then we will do a more permanent solution (probably broviac).

I hope all goes well with your line removal and replacement next week. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!

So happy that you were able to hook up with Malisa's ID Doctor, Dr.M. I can tell by your journal that you feel much more comfortable having this doctor tend to your line infections. Sometimes we just have to change doctors, esp. when they don't listen to us, or have other ideas of their own that will be no use to us. Hang in there my friend. I hope the antibiotics work and you start to feel better soon. Praying for you.!!! And thank you for praying for me.

Hi Heather,

Sorry to hear that you have those nasty bacteria beasties again!! I do hope that they figure it all out and get you on the right antibiotics. I am very upset that you are having that horrible rib/chest/back pain. I do hope it doesn't have anything to do with your infection, but if it does lets hope you find out real soon so the docs can start a plan to make you better. I can tell you are exhausted, you have had so much going on lately. I pray that you are finally able to get some much needed sleep. Hang in there, my friend. Love and Hugs, Ann-Marie

Hi Heather,
Ashley & I had a brilliant thought--maybe the cause of your fever is because of the yellow puddle you stepped in in your socks when you were trying to be a good samaritan in the hospital on Tuesday night.
Have you consulted with a good ID doc who specializes in infections resulting from incontinence?
We hope you;re feeling a lot better and don't end up in the hospital too, If you do, I'll send Ashley down to visit you. She;s good at making people smile!

I noticed that we all have prominently placed quotes or “bylines” at the top of each of our sites. What struck me is that they all send out the same message…”live for today” or that every moment is precious.

I am sad that we are in our twenties and that our medical issues and having to fight for our lives has made us lose our innocence, or the feeling of being invincible that most people our age have. At the same time, I feel lucky to know how truly precious each day is and how important it is to not take each day for granted. That knowledge has changed me and made me a new person. I don’t have many around me (my age) who “get it” like you guys do. I am sorry that we have to know the fear, but grateful that we have gained the insight to appreciate each day

Here are the quotes from each site…hope it is ok that I posted them here!

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. - George Carlin (Heather)

Nothing is more important than TODAY! (Kristina)

"Learn as if you were going to live forever. Live as if you were going to die tomorrow" - Gandhi. (Me)

Heather, I am sorry that things are not going well right now and that you are feeling so sick. I am praying that the "bugs" cooperate and get out of your system, although I know it isn't that easy. I hope they figure out what to do so you can start feeling a little better.

HI Heather,
I am SO glad you finally have all your appts set up in Boston. I know how frustrating it is to try to coordinate all of that. I think you'll be in really good hands with all 3 docs and it'll be good that they can all communicate with eachother since they all work at Floating.

I hope that your cultures come back negative, but I also hope that they can figure out why you feel so yucky. Hope we can get together soon. Love ya!

Hi Heather,
So happy to hear that you finally got all of your appts. worked out for your Boston trip. I will be in Boston seeing Dr. K and the GI in March, bummer that our appointments don't match up, it would have been nice to meet you. Too bad because I was looking forward to getting together with you. Maybe next time.

Sometimes the Labs really mess up on the tests. I can't tell you how many times I had bloodtest ordered and when the results came back some of the tests were never done. It is very frustrating, and it makes me angry. I only have so much energy and sleep most of the day so it makes it difficult for me to re-do the bloodwork, so I understand how upset you must be also.

Hope you have a great weekend. Hugs, Ann-Marie

Hi Heather, I guess it would not be a good thing to freeze your TPN. Praying for your migraines and pain. Also praying for you that all your appointments you need come together for you soon. Praying for your doctors to have wisdom and creative new ideas to help you. Enjoy the snow and know I am praying for you and Alyson!

Heather,
Lets pray that those headaches will go away or lessen in their intensity. Maybe Dr. Sw will have some answer or advice? At any rate, good luck today!:)

Hi Heather,

Glad to hear that your Mitochondrial DNA bloodwork came back negative. Sorry that there maybe problems with your urine. My 24 hour urine tests also show a possible ox phos. so we will be re-doing them too.

I really like your CB site. And I hope I can get around to starting my CB site too, that's if I can ever stop sleeping Thanks for sharing and you are in my thoughts and prayers. Good luck in the coming months and I hope you are able to get in to see Dr. K soon. Hugs,

Hi Heather,
I was led to your site by Malisa. I think she mentioned that they once suspected a mast cell disorder with you. I have been diagnosed with one (as well as many other problems) and am now in the process of a mito evaluation with Dr. Korson. I look forward to reading your site. I have a site that is password protected. If you are interested in viewing it, feel free to email me!

Hi Heather!
My name is Nikki, and I am a friend of Malisa and Kristina. I am 24, and have infant-onset Primary Systemic Carnitine Deficiency, which is a form of mito. I really hope that Dr. K will be able to help you find some answers so you can get better treatment. I will be thinking about you!

Heather,
Hi! I am Malisa's friend, Kristina. I have also e-mailed your sister, Alyson, and try to keep in contact with her. I am glad that you had a good appointment in Boston. Reading your page and your background, I saw a lot of myself in the description. I am not on TPN, but many other things, such as autonomic dysfunction sound so very familiar. I started looking for a diagnosis at age 14 and was diagnosed with mito at age 18 (now 28). I am interested in getting to know you.
