Kylie Maddison Houtchings

my princesses

March 23,1996 - August 8,2006
thank God for Kylie Maddison!

On Nov 14,2002, at age 6,Kylie was dignosed with stage IV neuroblastoma,an aggressive childhood cancer. She had also tested positive for neuroblastoma in her bone marrow...

Since dignosis, she went through 30 rounds of chemotherapy,
a 3 hour surgury to remove the main tumor, right adrenal gland and 4% of her right kidney,
36 treatments of external radiation (off and on through out 4 years) to various affected areas,
1 broviak line,(then a mediport,since sept.2003),
a stem cell harvest(Feb.2003),
stem cell transplant(July 2003),
10 rounds of a drug called acutane.
A very high number of shots and pokes,3 fresh frozen plasma, well over 100 platelet and about 80 blood transfusions.
countless scans and other tests.

She was said to be in remission July of 2003, her bone marrow was cleared.(Praise GOD)
In March of 2004,she relapsed, so April-June did a maintance type chemo to tide her over...
In July of 2004, we went to Philladelphia,PA for treatment called MIBG therapy. this treatment involved infusing her, with a high dose of internal radiation, and being in isolation for at least 5 days. She was declared NED (no evidence of disease in August 2004)
In December of 2004, after discovering some very small spots on a scan(small relapse). We made our way to New York city to attempt 3F8 antiody therapy that would hopefully keep her in check and return her to her NED status. We came home after a weeks stay upon discovery that we were not eligable, because In the short amount of time between discovering the small areas(in Cleveland) to the NY trip, her scans in NY showed more disease. So we arrived home to more chemo and more attack planning.. We also found out that there was going to be a new addition to our small family!

For several months,Her disease was slowed but not diminished and she began progressing. So, in March of 2005, we did a 2nd round of MIBG therapy in Phillidelphia, this time with a stem cell rescue.
She was declared NED again.... while still being seen at the Cleveland Clinic,Kylie was enrolled at NIH(National Institute of Health)in Bethesda,Maryland(June 2005).to participate in a study for ABT-751 an oral chemo-type pill,(the purpose was to keep her status of NED,for as long as possible, because in essence her cancer could and most likely would break through again). Kylie had just completed her 2nd round(July 2005)and relapsed for a third time. We then tried a diffrent chemo combo.

In August 2005,Kylie became a big sister to a little sister.

Also,in Aug of 2005, after scans, we found that the chemo we were trying, was not working and Kylies cancer was ,in fact, progressing.

So in Sept.2005, we traveled to Houston, Texas for an experimental treatment involving Kylies very own lymphosites and antibodies.

October of 2005, Kylie became symptomatic again. To alleviate pain and control what we could, We again started more chemo.

her bone marrow, so far, had remained negative(clear since July of 2003.Praise God!)....

DEC.2005 we started a chemo combo known as Avastin/irinotican. She also received a new mediport(her old one had finally had enough!).

In Feb 2006 Kylie was hospitalized for 9 days for severe pain and the inability to walk. She finished up her Avastin/irino combo and had radaition done to her left hip and right ankle. A wheelchair was ordered.

March 2006 Kylie COULD walk but only short distances.

June 2006 There were no more medical options available(that we felt would help her quality of life), So Kylie went on Hospice/home care, Not without hope

Kylie had never let this cancer get her down, she was a real fighter, She loved to sing, (she loved Hillary Duff and christian music), She has 2 cats, some fish and a puppy, that she adored. She was your typical kid that wanted to be a veternarian someday. Above ALL, she loved Jesus, her family and her Little sister Jackie the most.

She did get a Make A Wish in October of 2003,she took her friend Kristen with her to Disney World in Orlando,Florida.

Her dream was to visit all 50 states. Something that she virtually accomplished through postcards, gifts and trinkets from every state! (thanks so much to Western Reserve, friends and family).

Kylie passed away peacefully at her home on August 8th,2006 with her daddy(James) holding her and her mom(me) by her side. It was an honor and a blessed experience to be her mom and dad. When it came time for her body to leave our home, with friends and family gathered around, she was wrapped in her favorite blankets and all our love, as her daddy carried her out our front door to the awaiting hearse...God carried her home

Thankyou! To everyone, for all your thoughts, prayers, generosity and love towards our family, we will be forever grateful...
