July 30, 1999 - August 18, 2006

Welcome to Jaret's Web Page. Jaret was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma on December 27, 2001. NB is solid tumor cancer that begins in the sympathetic nervous system and is mainly found in children under five years old. Jaret's original treatment consisted of 10 rounds of chemotherapy, six surgeries, 12 rounds of radiation, seven weeks of dialysis and too many nights in the hospital to count. As a result of those chemotherapy treatments Jaret had profound hearing loss and poorly functioning kidneys.

He completed first-grade at Huy Elementary School in their hearing impaired program. He made some amazing friends there and learned so much! In February 2004, Jaret had surgery to place a cochlear implant in his left ear. This device has restored some of his hearing ability.

Jaret finished his original treatment plan and was off all major treatments for a wonderful two and a half years. His last scans in January 2006 showed some new aggressive disease in multiple bones throughout his body and in his bone marrow. We went the Cincinnati Children's for his next treatment where he completed a few months of oral chemo. When his disease progressed, we went to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He had MIBG treatment there in May and June 2006 and we did followup care here at Columbus Children's.
Jaret has two brothers - 9-year-old Jacob and new addition Jackson Thomas born November 15, 2005.
Thank you very much for visiting Jaret's page and following our journey.

Please visit some of our fellow neuroblastoma fighters from Ohio (the links are also at the bottom) Princess Eden also treats at Columbus Children's and recently relapsed
Christi treated at CHOP, Columbus and Sloane-Kettering in New York and was on treatment non stop since her diagnosis in 2002. Christi gained her angel wings one month and one day after Jaret.

Jaret turned seven years old on July 30, 2006. He received his angel wings on August 18, 2006.

God saw he was getting tired,
And a cure was not to be;
So He put His arms around him,
And whispered, "Come with me."
With tearful eyes we watched him suffer,
And saw him fade away,
Although we loved him dearly,
We could not make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands to rest;
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the Best!

It seems unreal that it has been five long years since we lost Jaret. Sometimes it feels like yesterday but most days it feels like forever...another lifetime. He is still and will always be a part of our lives. We talk about him every day. We see his face on our walls.
He is always on our minds. It is so important for us that Jackson and Jamie remember their brother and cousin. We also have Jaret's Garden as a special place to remember him and my mom and dad take such great care of it. They have bright beautiful lights and are adding some new plants for him today to keep it looking amazing. His 12-year old tree is getting huge as well! We just released green balloons from his garden on his birthday so we hope that he saw them and got our messages!

I miss Jaret so much but I have kept my mind busy with school and work. I hope that he is proud of his mom. I am so happy to be doing what I am and it's all because of him. I graduated in December with my Master's in Education so that I can teach deaf and hard of hearing students like Jaret and his awesome Huy/AG Bell buddies. Next week I will teach my very own first group of students in my own classroom at Huy! I am so excited but it is definitely bittersweet. As happy as I am, I would give it all up in a minute to have Jaret back. I know Jaret would be a proud big brother seeing his little brother Jackson off to his first day of kindergarten next week. And he would love to see Jacob marching in the band at his very first football game. I think he would also enjoy our new addition to the family, our dog Milo.

We will remember Jaret every single day of our lives whether it is five years or 25 years. He will always be with us. I see him every day in Jackson's face, in his cousin Jamie's fearlessness and whenever Jacob or Jordan share one of their favorite memories. I have been able to stay in touch with some of Jaret's school friends and their parents and they honor and remember him as well which means so much to me. It was such a hard, early life lesson for them but they all seem to have great, positive memories of him and still share pictures of their special buddy.

Our days are filled with memories of Jaret not just today. I know I have been able to focus on those wonderful happy times of blissful normalcy that we shared together as a family more than those nightmare events in the hospital that still creep into my brain ever now and then...so that is progress. Our time together was too short but as always I feel so proud and lucky that we had seven years and that I got to be the one Jaret called "mom".

Sweet Dreams to my little man in heaven,
Tina

To Jaret, my little man ~ mommy misses you and loves you more than ever. We all do. I hope that you are playing in the pool with Eden just like in your dad's dream. You can come visit my dreams anytime. Love you forever! Hugs to you, Mom
