Dearest Benjamin,
I came across your website while searching for a church in our new area of Pickerington. I will be praying for you big guy! Fighting cancer is very close to my heart. My little brother was diagnosed with END stage 4 cancer when he was almost 13 years old. Your mom and dad will understand what that means. He was given 0% survival and we were told to pray. He had a tough battle. But, glory to God, he is now 29 years old and completely, miraculously cancer free. His Doctor even calls him the "miracle patient". Keep fighting! Keep believing!! Keep praying!! Lots of hugs your way! Tracie

Hi Thomas family and Benjamin!
It's your "old" friend Ivy from up north :-) Sorry, haven't been around lately but I am glad your holiday went well. Yes, the Polar Express is WEIRD! I still am not sure about it.... Some good points, some questionable sequences,. Did you do the KnK Christmas party or are you going to the Valentines' party? We don't do them since Luke died (although we are still invited). Just wanted you to know I do still think of you all and pray things are looking up. God Bless-

Benjamin,

I recently received a log from your father on my daughters site. Her name is Olivia Langwasser, and we are currently in J5 at Children's. She has Leukemia. She is a strong brave person just like you. We have been in a lot over the past 5 months, and still have another 10 to go. She doesn't like coming here, but makes the best of it. Her mom stays with her all day long, and I come in the evenings. We play air hockey together, and she is good. I pray that you get better and get to stay home for good.

I was looking through a lot of pass emails and found you again. Its been awhile since I last wrote. But my son Kyle is also cancer free and does not have to take chemo any more. We take him in for another MRI this month and it still scares us. But if all goes well as it has ben these pasr 6 months, then the medi=port will come out.He wants to keep it in a jar. For sure after that happens then maybe we won't worry as much.He is 9 now and doing very well in school.

Hi guys! How are you all doing? I bet the kids are getting really big. Is Zoey in preschool yet? Is Emily playing any sports right now? How was Sherri and Em's trip to Texas ( I think thats where you were going)??? How is the weather up there? Nice down here. Our pool was 80 degrees yesterday. So we will all be getting ready to go swimming soon. Moms 40th birthday was yesterday. We are having a surprise birthday party tomorrow with all of the family down here and all that so she should be surprised! But we kinda think that she already somehow knows. Oh well I guess we will find out. Oma and Opa are here they got in Monday night and they are going to be here for a month. So we will finally get to spend some time with them. They are also planning on moving over here just waiting for Immigration Services, which could take a long time. So yea. Pray about that. Well I will try to talk to you all later. Hugs and kisses for all of you!! Miss you guys!!!

Here is a story I hope you enjoy it..

Take care, until next time!

Christmas Under the Snow
by Olive Thorne Miller from The Children's Book of Christmas Stories

It was just before Christmas, and Mr. Barnes was starting for the nearest village. The family were out at the door to see him start, and give him the last charges.

"Don't forget the Christmas dinner, papa," said Willie.

'"Specially the chickens for the pie!" put in Nora.

"An' the waisins," piped up little Tot, standing on tiptoe to give papa a good-bye kiss.

"I hate to have you go, George," said Mrs. Barnes anxiously. "It looks to me like a storm."

"Oh, I guess it won't be much," said Mr. Barnes lightly; "and the youngsters must have their Christmas dinner, you know."

"Well," said Mrs. Barnes, "remember this, George: if there is a bad storm don't try to come back. Stay in the village till it is over. We can get along alone for a few days, can't we, Willie?" turning to the boy who was giving the last touches to the harness of old Tim, the horse.

"Oh, yes! Papa, I can take care of mamma," said Willie earnestly.

"And get up the Christmas dinner out of nothing?" asked papa, smiling.

"I don't know," said Willie, hesitating, as he remembered the proposed dinner, in which he felt a deep interest.

"What could you do for the chicken pie?" went on papa with a roguish look in his eye, "or the plum-pudding?"

"Or the waisins?" broke in Tot anxiously.

"Tot has set her heart on the raisins," said papa, tossing the small maiden up higher than his head, and dropping her all laughing on the door-step, "and Tot shall have them sure, if papa can find them in S--. Now good-bye, all! Willie, remember to take care of mamma, and I depend on you to get up a Christmas dinner if I don't get back. Now, wife, don't worry!" were his last words as the faithful old horse started down the road.

Mrs. Barnes turned one more glance to the west, where a low, heavy bank of clouds was slowly rising, and went into the little house to attend to her morning duties.

"Willie," she said, when they were all in the snug little log-cabin in which they lived, "I'm sure there's going to be a storm, and it may be snow. You had better prepare enough wood for two or three days; Nora will help bring it in."

"Me, too!" said grave little Tot.

"Yes, Tot may help too," said mamma.

This simple little home was a busy place, and soon every one was hard at work. It was late in the afternoon before the pile of wood, which had been steadily growing all day, was high enough to satisfy Willie, for now there was no doubt about the coming storm, and it would probably bring snow; no one could guess how much, in that country of heavy storms.

"I wish the village was not so far off, so that papa could get back to-night," said Willie, as he came in with his last load.

Mrs. Barnes glanced out of the window. Broad scattering snowflakes were silently falling; the advance guard, she felt them to be, of a numerous host.

"So do I," she replied anxiously, "or that he did not have to come over that dreadful prairie, where it is so easy to get lost."

"But old Tim knows the way, even in the dark," said Willie proudly. "I believe Tim knows more'n some folks."

"No doubt he does, about the way home," said mamma, "and we won't worry about papa, but have our supper and go to bed. That'll make the time seem short."

The meal was soon eaten and cleared away, the fire carefully covered up on the hearth, and the whole little family quietly in bed. Then the storm, which had been making ready all day, came down upon them in earnest.

The bleak wind howled around the corners, the white flakes by millions and millions came with it, and hurled themselves upon that house. In fact, that poor little cabin alone on the wide prairie seemed to be the object of their sport. They sifted through the cracks in the walls, around the windows, and under the door, and made pretty little drifts on the floor. They piled up against it outside, covered the steps, and then the door, and then the windows, and then the roof, and at last buried it completely out of sight under the soft, white mass.

And all the time the mother and her three children lay snugly covered up in their beds fast asleep, and knew nothing about it.

The night passed away and morning came, but no light broke through the windows of the cabin. Mrs. Barnes woke at the usual time, but finding it still dark and perfectly quiet outside, she concluded that the storm was over, and with a sigh of relief turned over to sleep again. About eight o'clock, however, she could sleep no more, and became wide awake enough to think the darkness strange. At that moment the clock struck, and the truth flashed over her.

Being buried under snow is no uncommon thing on the wide prairies, and since they had wood and cornmeal in plenty, she would not have been much alarmed if her husband had been home. But snow deep enough to bury them must cover up all landmarks, and she knew her husband would not rest till he had found them. To get lost on the trackless prairie was fearfully easy, and to suffer and die almost in sight of home was no unusual thing, and was her one dread in living there.

A few moments she lay quiet in bed, to calm herself and get control of her own anxieties before she spoke to the children.

"Willie," she said at last, "are you awake?"

"Yes, mamma," said Willie; "I've been awake ever so long; isn't it most morning?"

"Willie," said the mother quietly, "we mustn't be frightened, but I think--I'm afraid--we are snowed in."

Willie bounded to his feet and ran to the door. "Don't open it!" said mamma hastily; "the snow may fall in. Light a candle and look out the window."

In a moment the flickering rays of the candle fell upon the window. Willie drew back the curtain. Snow was tightly banked up against it to the top.

"Why, mamma," he exclaimed, "so we are! and how can papa find us? and what shall we do?"

"We must do the best we can," said mamma, in a voice which she tried to make steady, "and trust that it isn't very deep, and that Tim and papa will find us, and dig us out."

By this time the little girls were awake and inclined to be very much frightened, but mamma was calm now, and Willie was brave and hopeful. They all dressed, and Willie started the fire. The smoke refused to rise, but puffed out into the room, and Mrs. Barnes knew that if the chimney were closed they would probably suffocate, if they did not starve or freeze.

The smoke in a few minutes choked them, and, seeing that something must be done, she put the two girls, well wrapped in blankets, into the shed outside the back door, closed the door to keep out the smoke, and then went with Willie to the low attic, where a scuttle door opened onto the roof.

"We must try," she said, "to get it open without letting in too much snow, and see if we can manage to clear the chimney."

"I can reach the chimney from the scuttle with a shovel," said Willie. "I often have with a stick."

After much labour, and several small avalanches of snow, the scuttle was opened far enough for Willie to stand on the top round of the short ladder, and beat a hole through to the light, which was only a foot above. He then shovelled off the top of the chimney, which was ornamented with a big round cushion of snow, and then by beating and shovelling he was able to clear the door, which he opened wide, and Mrs. Barnes came up on the ladder to look out. Dreary indeed was the scene! Nothing but snow as far as the eye could reach, and flakes still falling, though lightly.

The storm was evidently almost over, but the sky was gray and overcast.

They closed the door, went down, and soon had a fire, hoping that the smoke would guide somebody to them.

Breakfast was taken by candle-light, dinner--in time--in the same way, and supper passed with no sound from the outside world.

Many times Willie and mamma went to the scuttle door to see if any one was in sight, but not a shadow broke the broad expanse of white over which toward night the sun shone. Of course there were no signs of the roads, for through so deep snow none could be broken, and until the sun and frost should form a crust on top there was little hope of their being reached.

The second morning broke, and Willie hurried up to his post of lookout the first thing. No person was in sight, but he found a light crust on the snow, and the first thing he noticed was a few half-starved birds trying in vain to pick up something to eat. They looked weak and almost exhausted, and a thought struck Willie.

It was hard to keep up the courage of the little household. Nora had openly lamented that to-night was Christmas Eve, and no Christmas dinner to be had. Tot had grown very tearful about her "waisins," and Mrs. Barnes, though she tried to keep up heart, had become very pale and silent.

Willie, though he felt unbounded faith in papa, and especially in Tim, found it hard to suppress his own complaints when he remembered that Christmas would probably be passed in the same dismal way, with fears for papa added to their own misery.

The wood, too, was getting low, and mamma dared not let the fire go out, as that was the only sign of their existence to anybody; and though she did not speak of it, Willie knew, too, that they had not many candles, and in two days at farthest they would be left in the dark.

The thought that struck Willie pleased him greatly, and he was sure it would cheer up the rest. He made his plans, and went to work to carry them out without saying anything about it.

He brought out of a corner of the attic an old boxtrap he had used in the summer to catch birds and small animals, set it carefully on the snow, and scattered crumbs of corn-bread to attract the birds.

In half an hour he went up again, and found to his delight he had caught bigger game--a poor rabbit which had come from no one knows where over the crust to find food.

This gave Willie a new idea; they could save their Christmas dinner after all; rabbits made very nice pies.

Poor Bunny was quietly laid to rest, and the trap set again. This time another rabbit was caught, perhaps the mate of the first. This was the last of the rabbits, but the next catch was a couple of snowbirds. These Willie carefully placed in a corner of the attic, using the trap for a cage, and giving them plenty of food and water.

When the girls were fast asleep, with tears on their cheeks for the dreadful Christmas they were going to have, Willie told mamma about his plans. Mamma was pale and weak with anxiety, and his news first made her laugh and then cry. But after a few moments given to her long pent-up tears, she felt much better and entered into his plans heartily.

The two captives up in the attic were to be Christmas presents to the girls, and the rabbits were to make the long anticipated pie. As for plum-pudding, of course that couldn't be thought of.

"But don't you think, mamma," said Willie eagerly, "that you could make some sort of a cake out of meal, and wouldn't hickory nuts be good in it? You know I have some left up in the attic, and I might crack them softly up there, and don't you think they would be good?" he concluded anxiously.

"Well, perhaps so," said mamma, anxious to please him and help him in his generous plans. "I can try. If I only had some eggs--but seems to me I have heard that snow beaten into cake would make it light--and there's snow enough, I'm sure," she added with a faint smile, the first Willie had seen for three days.

The smile alone he felt to be a great achievement, and he crept carefully up the ladder, cracked the nuts to the last one, brought them down, and mamma picked the meats out, while he dressed the two rabbits which had come so opportunely to be their Christmas dinner. "Wish you Merry Christmas!" he called out to Nora and Tot when they waked. "See what Santa Claus has brought you!"

Before they had time to remember what a sorry Christmas it was to be, they received their presents, a live bird, for each, a bird that was never to be kept in a cage, but fly about the house till summer came, and then to go away if it wished.

Pets were scarce on the prairie, and the girls were delighted. Nothing papa could have brought them would have given them so much happiness.

They thought no more of the dinner, but hurried to dress themselves and feed the birds, which were quite tame from hunger and weariness. But after a while they saw preparations for dinner, too. Mamma made a crust and lined a deep dish--the chicken pie dish--and then she brought a mysterious something out of the cupboard, all cut up so that it looked as if it might be chicken, and put it in the dish with other things, and then she tucked them all under a thick crust, and set it down in a tin oven before the fire to bake. And that was not all. She got out some more cornmeal, and made a batter, and put in some sugar and something else which she slipped in from a bowl, and which looked in the batter something like raisins; and at the last moment Willie brought her a cup of snow and she hastily beat it into the cake, or pudding, whichever you might call it, while the children laughed at the idea of making a cake out of snow. This went into the same oven and pretty soon it rose up light and showed a beautiful brown crust, while the pie was steaming through little fork holes on top, and sending out most delicious odours.

At the last minute, when the table was set and everything ready to come up, Willie ran up to look out of the scuttle, as he had every hour of daylight since they were buried. In a moment came a wild shout down the ladder.

"They're coming! Hurrah for old Tim!"

Mamma rushed up and looked out, and saw--to be sure--old Tim slowly coming along over the crust, drawing after him a wood sled on which were two men.

"It's papa!" shouted Willie, waving his arms to attract their attention.

"Willie!" came back over the snow in tones of agony. "Is that you? Are all well?"

"All well!" shouted Willie, "and just going to have our Christmas dinner."

"Dinner?" echoed papa, who was now nearer.

"Where is the house, then?"

"Oh, down here!" said Willie, "under the snow; but we're all right, only we mustn't let the plum-pudding spoil."

Looking into the attic, Willie found that mamma had fainted away, and this news brought to her aid papa and the other man, who proved to be a good friend who had come to help.

Tim was tied to the chimney, whose thread of smoke had guided them home, and all went down into the dark room. Mrs. Barnes soon recovered, and while Willie dished up the smoking dinner, stories were told on both sides.

Mr. Barnes had been trying to get through the snow and to find them all the time, but until the last night had made a stiff crust he had been unable to do so. Then Mrs. Barnes told her story, winding up with the account of Willie's Christmas dinner. "And if it hadn't been for his keeping up our hearts I don't know what would have become of us," she said at last.

"Well, my son," said papa, "you did take care of mamma, and get up a dinner out of nothing, sure enough; and now we'll eat the dinner, which I am sure is delicious."

So it proved to be; even the cake, or pudding, which Tot christened snow pudding, was voted very nice, and the hickory nuts as good as raisins. When they had finished, Mr. Barnes brought in his packages, gave Tot and the rest some "sure-enough waisins," and added his Christmas presents to Willie's; but though all were overjoyed, nothing was quite so nice in their eyes as the two live birds.

After dinner the two men and Willie dug out passages from the doors, through the snow, which had wasted a good deal, uncovered the windows, and made a slanting way to his shed for old Tim. Then for two or three days Willie made tunnels and little rooms under the snow, and for two weeks, while the snow lasted, Nora and Tot had fine times in the little snow playhouses.

Its nice ha!!1

Shippeitaro
by Mary F. Nixon-Roulet Japanese Folk Stories and Fairy Tales

Once upon a time there was a brave soldier lad who was seeking his fortune in the wide, wide world. One day he lost his way in a pathless forest, and wandered about until he came at length to a small clearing in the midst of which stood a ruined temple. The huge trees waved above its walls, and the leaves in the thicket whispered around them. No sun ever shone there, and no human being lived there.

A storm was coming up, and the soldier lad took refuge among the ruins.

"Here is all I want," said he. "Here I shall have shelter from the storm-god's wrath, and a comfortable place to sleep in."

So he wrapped himself in his cloak, and, lying down, was soon fast asleep. But his slumbers did not last long. At midnight he was wakened by fearful shrieks, and springing to his feet, he looked out at the temple door.

The storm was over. Moonlight shone on the clearing. And there he saw what seemed to be a troop of monstrous cats, who like huge phantoms marched across the open space in front of the temple. They broke into a wild dance, uttering shrieks, howls, and wicked laughs. Then they all sang together:

"Whisper not to Shippeitaro That the Phantom Cats are near - Whisper not to Shippeitaro, Lest he soon appear!"

The soldier lad crouched low behind the door, for brave as he was he did not wish these fearful creatures to see him. But soon, with a chorus of wild yells, the Phantom Cats disappeared as quickly as they had come, and all was quiet as before.

Then the soldier lad lay down and went to sleep again, nor did he waken till the sun peered into the temple and told him that it was morning. He quickly found his way out of the forest and walked on until he came to the cottage of a peasant.

As he approached he heard sounds of bitter weeping. A beautiful young maiden met him at the door, and her eyes were red with crying. She greeted him kindly.

"May I have some food?" said he.

"Enter and welcome," she replied. "My parents are just having breakfast. You may join them, for no one passes our door hungry."

Thanking her the lad entered, and her parents greeted him courteously but sadly, and shared their breakfast with him. He ate heartily, and, when he was finished, rose to go.

"Thank you many times for this good meal, kind friends," said he, "and may happiness be yours."

"Happiness can never again be ours!" answered the old man, weeping.

"You are in trouble, then," said the lad. "Tell me about it - perhaps I can help you in some way."

"Alas!" replied the old man, "There is within yonder forest a ruined temple. It is the abode of horrors too terrible for words. Each year a demon, whom no one has ever seen, demands that the people of this land give him a beautiful maiden to devour. She is placed in a cage and carried to the temple just at sunset. This year it is my daughter's turn to be offered to the fiend!" And the old man buried his face in his hands and groaned.

The soldier lad paused to think for a moment, then he said:

"It is terrible, indeed! But do not despair. I think I know a way to help you. Who is Shippeitaro?"

"Shippeitaro is a beautiful dog, owned by our lord, the prince," answered the old man.

"That is just the thing!" cried the lad. "Only keep your daughter closely at home. Do not let her out of your sight. Trust me and she shall be saved."

Then the soldier lad hurried away, and found the castle of the prince. He begged that he might borrow Shippeitaro just for one night.

"You may take him upon the condition that you bring him back safely," said the prince.

"Tomorrow he shall return in safety," answered the lad.

Taking Shippeitaro with him, he hurried to the peasant's cottage, and, when evening was come, he placed the dog in the cage which was to have carried the maiden. The bearers then took the cage to the ruined temple, and, placing it on the ground, ran away as fast as their legs would carry them.

The lad, laughing softly to himself, hid inside the temple as before, and so quiet was the spot that he fell asleep. At midnight he was aroused by the same wild shrieks he had heard the night before. He rose and looked out at the temple door.

Through the darkness, into the moonlight, came the troop of Phantom Cats. This time they were led by a fierce, black Tomcat. As they came nearer they chanted with unearthly screeches:

"Whisper not to Shippeitaro That the Phantom Cats are near - Whisper not to Shippeitaro, Lest he soon appear!"

With that the great Tomcat caught sight of the cage and, uttering a fearful yowl, sprang upon it, With one blow of his claws he tore open the lid, when, instead of the dainty morsel he expected, out jumped Shippeitaro!

The dog sprang upon the Tomcat, and caught him by the throat - while the Phantom Cats stood still in amazement. Drawing his sword the lad hurried to Shippeitaro's side, and what with Shippeitaro's teeth and the lad's hard blows, in an instant the great Tomcat was torn and cut into pieces. When the Phantom Cats saw this, they uttered one wild shriek and fled away, never to return again.

Then the soldier lad, leading Shippeitaro, returned in triumph to the peasant's cottage. There in terror the maiden awaited his arrival, but great was the joy of herself and her parents when they knew that the Tomcat was no more.

"Oh, sir," cried the maiden, "I can never thank you! I am the only child of my parents, and no one would have been left to care for them if I had been the monster's victim."

"Do not thank me," answered the lad. "Thank the brave Shippeitaro. It was he who sprang upon the great Tomcat and chased away the Phantom Creatures."

Hansel and Gretel
by The Brothers Grimm

Hard-by a great forest dwelt a poor wood-cutter with his two children and his wife who was their stepmother. The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel. The wood-cutter had little to bite and to break, and once when a great famine fell on the land he could no longer get daily bread. Now when he thought over this by night in his bed, and tossed about in his trouble, he groaned, and said to his wife:

"What is to become of us? How are we to feed our poor children, when we no longer have anything even for ourselves?"

"I'll tell you what, husband," answered the woman, "early to-morrow morning we will take the children out into the woods where it is the thickest - there we will light a fire for them, and give each of them one piece of bread more, and then we will go to our work and leave them alone. They will not find the way home again, and we shall be rid of them."

"No, wife," said the man, "I will not do that - how can I bear to leave my children alone in the woods?--the wild beasts would soon come and tear them to pieces."

"Oh, you fool!" said she. "Then we must all four die of hunger - you may as well plane the planks for our coffins." And she left him no peace until he said he would do as she wished.

"But I feel very sorry for the poor children, all the same," said the man.

The two children had also not been able to sleep for hunger, and had heard what their father's wife had said to their father.

Gretel wept bitter tears, and said to Hansel, "Now all is over with us."

"Be quiet, Gretel," said Hansel, "do not be troubled - I will soon find a way to help us."

And when the old folks had fallen asleep, he got up, put on his little coat, opened the door below, and crept outside. The moon shone brightly, and the white pebbles which lay in front of the house shone like real silver pennies. Hansel stooped and put as many of them in the little pocket of his coat as he could make room for. Then he went back, and said to Gretel, "Be at ease, dear little sister, and sleep in peace - God will not forsake us." And he lay down again in his bed.

When the day dawned, but before the sun had risen, the woman came and awoke the two children, saying:

"Get up, you lazy things! we are going into the forest to fetch wood." She gave each a little piece of bread, and said, "There is something for your dinner, but do not eat it up before then, for you will get nothing else."

Gretel took the bread under her apron, as Hansel had the stones in his pocket. Then they all set out together on the way to the forest, and Hansel threw one after another of the white pebble-stones out of his pocket on the road.

When they had reached the middle of the forest, the father said, "Now, children, pile up some wood and I will light a fire that you may not be cold."

Hansel and Gretel drew brushwood together till it was as high as a little hill.

The brushwood was lighted, and when the flames were burning very high the woman said:

"Now, children, lie down by the fire and rest - we will go into the forest and cut some wood. When we have done, we will come back and fetch you away."

Hansel and Gretel sat by the fire, and when noon came, each ate a little piece of bread, and as they heard the strokes of the wood-axe they were sure their father was near. But it was not the axe, it was a branch which he had tied to a dry tree, and the wind was blowing it backward and forward. As they had been sitting such a long time they were tired, their eyes shut, and they fell fast asleep. When at last they awoke, it was dark night.

Gretel began to cry, and said, "How are we to get out of the forest now?"

But Hansel comforted her, saying, "Just wait a little, until the moon has risen, and then we will soon find the way."

And when the full moon had risen, Hansel took his little sister by the hand, and followed the pebbles, which shone like bright silver pieces, and showed them the way.

They walked the whole night long, and by break of day came once more to their father's house.

They knocked at the door, and when the woman opened it, and saw that it was Hansel and Gretel, she said, "You naughty children, why have you slept so long in the forest? we thought you were never coming back at all!"

The father, however, was glad, for it had cut him to the heart to leave them behind alone.

Not long after, there was once more a great lack of food in all parts, and the children heard the woman saying at night to their father:

"Everything is eaten again - we have one half- loaf left, and after that there is an end. The children must go - we will take them farther into the wood, so that they will not find their way out again - there is no other means of saving ourselves!"

The man's heart was heavy, and he thought, "It would be better to share our last mouthful with the children."

The woman, however, would listen to nothing he had to say, but scolded him. He who says A must say B, too, and as he had given way the first time, he had to do so a second time also.

The children were still awake and had heard the talk. When the old folks were asleep, Hansel again got up, and wanted to go and pick up pebbles, but the woman had locked the door, and he could not get out.

So he comforted his little sister, and said:

"Do not cry, Gretel - go to sleep quietly, the good God will help us."

Early in the morning came the woman, and took the children out of their beds. Their bit of bread was given to them, but it was still smaller than the time before. On the way into the forest Hansel crumbled his in his pocket, and often threw a morsel on the ground until little by little, he had thrown all the crumbs on the path.

The woman led the children still deeper into the forest, where they had never in their lives been before. Then a great fire was again made, and she said:

"Just sit there, you children, and when you are tired you may sleep a little - we are going into the forest to cut wood, and in the evening when we are done, we will come and fetch you away."

When it was noon, Gretel shared her piece of bread with Hansel, who had scattered his by the way. Then they fell asleep, and evening came and went, but no one came to the poor children.

They did not awake until it was dark night, and Hansel comforted his little sister, and said:

"Just wait, Gretel, until the moon rises, and then we shall see the crumbs of bread which I have scattered about - they will show us our way home again."

When the moon came they set out, but they found no crumbs, for the many thousands of birds which fly about in the woods and fields had picked them all up.

Hansel said to Gretel, "We shall soon find the way."

But they did not find it. They walked the whole night and all the next day, too, from morning till evening, but they did not get out of the forest - they were very hungry, for they had nothing to eat but two or three berries which grew on the ground. And as they were so tired that their legs would carry them no longer, they lay down under a tree and fell asleep.

It was now three mornings since they had left their father's house. They began to walk again, but they always got deeper into the forest, and if help did not come soon, they must die of hunger and weariness. When it was midday, they saw a beautiful snow-white bird sitting on a bough. It sang so sweetly that they stood still and listened to it. And when it had done, it spread its wings and flew away before them, and they followed it until they reached a little house, on the roof of which it perched - and when they came quite up to the little house, they saw it was built of bread and covered with cakes, but that the windows were of clear sugar.

"We will set to work on that," said Hansel, "and have a good meal. I will eat a bit of the roof, and you, Gretel, can eat some of the window, it will taste sweet."

Hansel reached up, and broke off a little of the roof to try how it tasted, and Gretel leaned against the window and nibbled at the panes.

Then a soft voice cried from the room,--

"Nibble, nibble, gnaw, Who is nibbling at my little house?"

The children answered:

"The wind, the wind, The wind from heaven" -

and went on eating. Hansel, who thought the roof tasted very nice, tore down a great piece of it - and Gretel pushed out the whole of one round window-pane, sat down, and went to eating it.

All at once the door opened, and a very, very old woman, who leaned on crutches, came creeping out. Hansel and Gretel were so scared that they let fall what they had in their hands.

The old woman, however, nodded her head, and said, "Oh, you dear children, who has brought you here? Do come in, and stay with me. No harm shall happen to you."

She took them both by the hand, and led them into her little house. Then good food was set before them, milk and pancakes, with sugar, apples, and nuts. Afterwards two pretty little beds were covered with clean white linen, and Hansel and Gretel lay down in them, and thought they were in heaven.

The old woman had only pretended to be so kind - she was in reality a wicked witch, who lay in wait for children, and had built the little bread house in order to coax them there.

Early in the morning, before the children were awake, she was already up, and when she saw both of them sleeping and looking so pretty, with their plump red cheeks, she muttered to herself, "That will be a dainty mouthful!"

Then she seized Hansel, carried him into a little stable, and shut him in behind a grated door. He might scream as he liked,--it was of no use. Then she went to Gretel, shook her till she awoke and cried: "Get up, lazy thing - fetch some water, and cook something good for your brother - he is in the stable outside, and is to be made fat. When he is fat, I will eat him."

Gretel began to weep, but it was all in vain - she was forced to do what the wicked witch told her.

And now the best food was cooked for poor Hansel, but Gretel got nothing but crab-shells.

Every morning the woman crept to the little stable, and cried, "Hansel, stretch out your finger that I may feel if you will soon be fat."

Hansel, however, stretched out a little bone to her, and the old woman, who had dim eyes, could not see it - she thought it was Hansel's finger, and wondered why he grew no fatter. When four weeks had gone by, and Hansel still was thin, she could wait no longer.

"Come, Gretel," she cried to the girl, "fly round and bring some water. Let Hansel be fat or lean, to-morrow I will kill him, and cook him."

Ah, how sad was the poor little sister when she had to fetch the water, and how her tears did flow down over her cheeks!

"Dear God, do help us," she cried. "If the wild beasts in the forest had but eaten us, we should at any rate have died together."

"Just keep your noise to yourself," said the old woman - "all that won't help you at all."

Early in the morning, Gretel had to go out and hang up the kettle with the water, and light the fire.

"We will bake first," said the old woman. "I have already heated the oven, and got the dough ready."

She pushed poor Gretel out to the oven, from which the flames of fire were already darting.

"Creep in," said the witch, "and see if it is heated, so that we can shut the bread in." And when once Gretel was inside, she meant to shut the oven and let her bake in it, and then she would eat her, too.

But Gretel saw what she had in her mind, and said, "I do not know how I am to do it - how do you get in?"

"Silly goose," said the old woman. "The door is big enough - just look, I can get in myself!" and she crept up and thrust her head into the oven. Then Gretel gave her a push that drove her far into it, and shut the iron door, tight.

Gretel ran as quick as lightning to Hansel, opened his little stable, and cried, "Hansel, we are saved! The old witch is dead!"

Then Hansel sprang out like a bird from its cage when the door is opened for it. How they did dance about and kiss each other. And as they had no longer any need to fear her, they went into the witch's house, and in every corner there stood chests full of pearls and jewels.

"These are far better than pebbles!" said Hansel, and filled his pockets, and Gretel said, "I, too, will take something home with me," and filled her pinafore.

"But now we will go away," said Hansel, "that we may get out of the witch's forest." When they had walked for two hours, they came to a great piece of water. "We cannot get over," said Hansel - "I see no foot-plank and no bridge."

"And no boat crosses, either," answered Gretel, "but a white duck is swimming there - if I ask her, she will help us over." Then she cried,--

"Little duck, little duck, dost thou see, Hansel and Gretel are waiting for thee? There's never a plank or bridge in sight, Take us across on thy back so white."

The duck came to them, and Hansel sat on its back, and told his sister to sit by him.

"No," replied Gretel, "that will be too heavy for the little duck - she shall take us across, one after the other."

The good little duck did so, and when they were once safely across and had walked for a short time, they knew where they were, and at last they saw from afar their father's house.

Then they began to run, rushed in, and threw themselves into their father's arms. The man had not known one happy hour since he had left the children in the forest - the woman, however, was dead. Gretel emptied her pinafore until pearls and precious stones rolled about the floor, and Hansel threw one handful after another out of his pocket to add to them. Then all care was at an end, and they lived happily together ever after.

My tale is done - there runs a mouse - whosoever catches it may make himself a big fur cap out of it.

I hope you enjoy them!!

Hey Buddy,

How are you Buddy, I hope you are having a fun fill week, I know, I heard you were sick, but I will pray for that to go away really soon. The pictures are AWESOME!!!
You know, I am scare of jumping from the diving board HOW DO YOU DO IT!! I think is scarry :)... Well buddy, take care of yourself and family and always know that your are always in my thoughts and prayers.

Hey look what I found for you I hope you enjoy them they made me smile I hope they do the same for you!!

You Can Argue with a Tennis Ball

You can argue with a tennis ball
or argue with your hat.
You can argue with bananas
or a broken baseball bat.

You can argue with your locker.
You can argue with your shoe.
You can argue all day long
until your face is turning blue.

You can argue with a pickle.
You can argue with a bee.
It's a fact that you can argue
with most anything you see.

You can argue with the football field
or argue with with the bleachers.
But I've found it isn't very smart
to argue with the teachers.

My Teacher Calls Me Sweetie Cakes

My teacher calls me sweetie cakes.
My classmates think it's funny
to hear her call me angel face
or pookie bear or honey.

She calls me precious baby doll.
She calls me pumpkin pie
or doodle bug or honey bunch
or darling butterfly.

My class is so embarassing
I need to find another;
just any class at all
in which the teacher's not my mother.

I Have to Write a Poem

I have to write a poem
but I really don't know how.
So maybe I'll just make a rhyme
with something dumb, like "cow."

Okay, I'll write about a cow,
but that's so commonplace.
I think I'll have to make her be...
a cow from outer space!

My cow will need a helmet
and a space suit and a ship.
Of course, she'll keep a blaster
in the holster on her hip.

She'll hurtle through the galaxy
on meteoric flights
to battle monkey aliens
in huge karate fights.

She'll duel with laser sabers
while avoiding lava spray
to vanquish evil emperors
and always save the day.

I hope the teacher likes my tale,
"Amazing Astro Cow."
Yes, that's the poem I will write
as soon as I learn how.

My Elephant Thinks I'm Wonderful

My elephant thinks I'm wonderful.
My elephant thinks I'm cool.
My elephant hangs around with me
and follows me into school.

My elephant likes the way I look.
He thinks that I'm fun and smart.
He thinks that I'm kind and generous
and have a terrific heart.

My elephant thinks I'm brave and bold.
He's proud of my strength and guts.
But mostly he likes the way I smell.
My elephant thinks I'm nuts.

I Said A Prayer For You Today

I said a prayer for you today,

And know God must have heard.

I felt the answer in my heart

Although He spoke no word.

I didn't ask for wealth or fame,

I knew you wouldn't mind.

I asked Him to send treasures

Of a far more lasting kind.

I asked that He'd be near you

At the start of each new day,

To grant you health and blessings

And friends to share your way.

I asked for happiness for you

In all things great and small,

But it was for His loving care

I prayed the most of all.

Once upon a time, there were three little pigs. And each one built a house to live in.

The first little pig built his house out of straw. "A straw house is easy to build," he said.

The second little pig built her house out of sticks. "A stick house is easy to build," she said.

The third little pig built his house out of bricks. "A brick house is hard to build, but it is very strong," he said.

Then one day, a big bad wolf knocked on the door of the straw house.

"Little pig, little pig, let me come in," said the wolf in his deep voice.

The first little pig called out from behind the door, "No, no, you can't come in, not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!"

Well, the wolf did not like this answer one bit, so he said, "Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in!"

So the big bad wolf huffed, and he puffed, and he blew the house in!
The first little pig ran all the way to the second little pig's house. As you remember, this house was made of sticks. But as soon as the door was shut, they heard a deep voice.

"Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in," said the big bad wolf.

This time two little pigs called out from behind the door, "No, no, you can't come in, not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!"

Well, the wolf still did not like this answer, so he said, "Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in!"

So the big bad wolf huffed, and he puffed, and he blew the house in!

This time, two little pigs ran all the way to the third little pig's house. And THIS house was made of bricks.

But as soon as the door was shut, they heard a familiar deep voice.

"Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in," said the big bad wolf.

This time three little pigs called out from behind the door, "No, no, you can't come in, not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!"

Well, the wolf was getting tired of this answer, so he said, "Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in!"

So the big bad wolf huffed, and he puffed... but he did NOT blow the house in! The brick house was too strong!

The three little pigs were very happy, but the wolf was very angry.

"If I can't blow your house in," the big bad wolf said in his deep voice, "then I'm coming down your chimney to eat you!"

The wolf started down the chimney. But there was something he did not know: there was a big pot of boiling water in the fireplace.

The wolf came down further, and further, and further. He was almost in the house when he landed in the water!

"Yeeeeow!" yelled the big bad wolf. And he went straight back up the chimney!

So, the big bad wolf - who was tired of huffing and puffing - ran away. And the three little pigs lived happily ever after.

But they all learned a lesson: don't build a house out of straw or sticks. It may be easier, but a brick house is more wolf-proof!

The End. Now, let's play!

I love this story I figure you would love too, let me know what you think. As always hoping and praying that you had a wonderful weekend fill with laughter and smiles. Also, hope you have a great Monday and have a lot of fun at school. I understand the puppy thing. We have two new ones and nothing is safe from their teeth. Just stopping by to let you know you are in my heart and prayers May God draw near and fill your heart with strength and grace, but most of all, hope.

There is constant joy abiding
In Christ my Lord and King;
Of His love that passeth knowledge
My heart and tongue shall sing.

He is all in all to me,
And my song of songs shall be,
Hallelujah, O my Savior,
I am trusting only Thee.

When my path is veiled in shadows,
And clouds above me roll,
I can smile amid the tempest,
His glory fills my soul.

I can see his bow of promise
Through tears and trials deep;
I can hear His voice like music,
That lulls my care to sleep.

I shall yet behold the praise Him,
And dwell in perfect peace
In the golden land of beauty,
Where cloud and wave shall cease.

Sending a ton of prayers your way.
Love and hugs

Hello to you all,

I am sorry that it has been such a long time. We have had a lot going on, and I have been neglecting my caringbridge friends (sort of). I am still praying for y'all, but I have not taken any time to sign your guestbook. I will try to do better.

I am so sorry to hear about your doggie. I know it is hard. I lost my kitty cat several years ago to cancer, she was nine, and I was very sad. Steve, my husband, has a cat that he has had since he was 28, she is 14 now. She has lost some teeth, and been through surgery last year to remove a bladder stone. I know she is not going to live forever, and I dread the day... and she is getting on up there in kitty years.

Other than that I am glad to see that things are going well with you guys.

Do you have any big plans for Memorial day? Steve has a new job, and guess what!!! He is off. This will be his first Memorial Day off in at least 14 years. We are going to his mom's house to go swimming. They have a pool in their neighborhood, so we are all getting together, and this is race week in Charlotte, so we are going to the Speedstreet Festival downtown to see what we can get for free, ha ha!

Well, I have rambled on, filling up your guestbook.

I was looking that it said it had been 2 years 9 months since Ben's DX. He and Abigail were diagnosed pretty close together then. In July it will be three years for her.

Until next time... All my best!!!

Ben and Family,
I'm so sorry about your beloved dog. I know that has to be hard on everyone. My dad has a rotweiller and they are such precious animals.
I'm glad to hear that everyone else is doing fine. Busy with spring sports. Only 8 more days of school and then summer vacation starts! Wohoo!
Tell mom congrats on the IEP for next year. Seems like us moms are forever battling something for our kids and trying to explain to the rest of the world what they don't understand about childhood cancer and diseases.

Just a quick note to let ya know I've been thinkin bout ya. This is Kevin's Uncle Richard. It's been several days since I dropped ya a note so I thought I'd take a minute to say howdy! Looks like things have been pretty busy round the house there. I hope your ball teams are doing well and that you are having a blast! I bring food and trays to the schools (pickerington) on thursdays. I drive one of those big trucks that says "SYSCO" on it. I don't know which one of the schools you go to, but you may have even seen me! Anyway, what big plans do ya have for the summer?
I was glad to see your mom continues to update your site. I'm glad to see that you continue to do well. You are a pretty cool chap there buddy. Tell your dad that he did a great job with your site too! Looks like you have a pretty cool dad too.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. I'll check in on you soon.

Hey there Benjamin and family,

I hope that y'all are well, and you are having fun playing ball.

Thank y'all for stopping by and signing Abby's guestbook and continuing to check on us.

Benjamin, I like to put litte pictures in peoples' guestbooks when I sign, but I couldn't think of too much that is appropriate for a boy who is almost 8. I have lots of flowers and stuff, but then I foudn this picture of Plankton. I hope you like SpongeBob. Plankton is one of my favorite characters, ha ha!

Dear Benjamin,
How's everything going big man? I hear you have a birthday coming up. The big 'ol 8! When is the big day? hopefully I haven't missed it. If I have... HAPPY belated (that means I'm goofy and LATE)BIRTHDAY! I think your picture with the sunglasses is really cool. Just checkin' in on ya.

Jeff- thanks for your post at Kevin's site.
My wife has kinda "adopted" a little angel. Her site address is: http://www3.caringbridge.org/oh/hatti/.
She has the same dx as Kevie. If you are logged on sometime and have a minute, jot her a note of encouragement. Not as many people write to Hatti's site as some of the the other kids. On a more personal note, I can understand your anxiety as retest dates come up. Just rest assured your are not alone. I'm sure they will come back clean. You've got a special little man there. Sorry to be so brief, gotta go get the dogs. Three of 'em...barkin' after 9P.M. Desi and Lucy. Hence the web address. I told my wife we should have renamed them "Bonnie and Clyde" because everywhere they go they bring havoc!

Hello - referred here by Rich - Kevin's uncle. I am with a wish granting group in Canton, Ohio called Wishes Can Happen. We had the privilege of giving Kevin a B17 ride, and also re-doing his room in a World War II theme. We also send our wish kids to Give Kids the World in Florida. What an absolutely wonderful place, isn't it? I hope someday when I retire, I can spend time at Give Kids the World volunteering. Do you know the story of it? The man who founded it, Henry, was a child in the Nazi concentration camps. By the time we liberated the camps, his mother and father had been killed, and he and his sister were at the brink of death. This young man made a promise to himself that "someday he would give back to the world for saving them." He eventually came to America and became a millionaire in the hotel industry. And he kept that promise by creating Give Kids the World. So that wonderful children such as yours from all over the world can enjoy Disney. What wonderful people there are in this world! Praying that your son continues to do well. Thank you for sharing all the pictures. You sure have a good looking boy!

Hi Ben! Nice to meet you! You sure are a cutie, but I bet everyone tells you that! I was sent to your website by our friends Rich and Julie, who are aunt and uncle to our friend Kevin. Kevin had Ewing's Sarcoma and he earned his angel wings on April 21st. He was a very brave boy! I bet you are a brave boy too. My daughter, Caitlin, spent the last year battling cancer too! She has osteosarcoma and is now cancer free. She just turned 17 this week! She's going to go back to school next week for the first time all school year.
I have alot of kids that I check on, so I will check on you often and stop in to say hello!

Jeff, Ben and family,

Just a quick note to say I'm glad you received my post. The caringbridge network is a wonderful tool indeed. I was getting pressed for time this morning so I had to get moving with my errands and "to do" list. The site I had visited that got me to Ben's was: www.caringbridge.org/pa/brynnwlodyka.I hope I typed that in correctly. I had seen your post in her guestbook.
Our nephew's site is: www3.caringbridge.org/oh/kevin11.
As it worked out, Lisa & Greg (Kevin's parents),did not get his site ready as early as they had hoped to. Kevin was diagnosed Feb.'04 already in stage 4. They had hoped to get pictures in the album, but only had time to post just the one you see when the site comes up. Same holds true with updates. Lisa did a great job in getting what's there now in. I think she & Greg may keep the site going in Kevin's honor.
As I said earlier, I'll check in on Ben from time to time.
Who knows Jeff, he'll probably grow up to be a middle linebacker in the NFL! Then you can retire to that Island home in the tropics!
Well, I'm gonna check in on Kevin's site...

Always in our prayers...
Kevin Willis' Uncle Rich

P.S. Jeff, I really liked all the details on Ben's site. I wish Kevin's would have had the time to be developed more.

So glad to see things are going very well for your little guy! We have added Ben to our "favorites". I'm an uncle of Kevin Willis. Kevin earned his wings Thursday the 21st last week battling Ewings. He was also on caringbridge. I noticed your Pickerington locale as we are in Pataskala.

Hey Ben, I haven't said anything lately so here are two really good prayers. You are in our thoughts, prayers ,and hearts.

God our Father, you see your children growing up in an
unsteady and confusing world: Show them that your ways
give more life than the ways of the world, and that following
you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to
take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance
for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you,
and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us to thy
never-failing care and love, for this life and the life to come,
knowing that thou art doing for them better things than we
can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I just heard about Benjamin today in my Theology class at Newark Catholic and felt compelled to pray for him. My family and I will pray for you Benjamin and we will ask God to take you into His almighty hands. Here is a prayer for the Time of Illness

Lord Jesus, you came into the world to heal the sick and dying, and to endure our sufferings. You went about healing all and bringing comfort to those in pain and need. We come before you now in this time of illness asking that you may be the source of our strength in body, courage in spirit and patience in pain. May we join ourselves more closely to you and trust in our own inner wisdom to give us faith and hope that you will heal all of our pain and suffering in love. Knowing through You we can learn patience and peace. Assist us and restore us to health so that united more closely to You and Our Father, we may give praise and honor to your name. Amen. -http://www.spiritteaching.com/prayers.html

Whats up? How is Ben's leg doing? I liked the picture of Ben sitting on the couch with his cast. It was cute. That is really great that his bones are as normal as any other seven year olds. How about some newer pictures??? That would be cool! I have been on Mom to get new ones on Steven's, but she has not had time to get to that. Dear Thomas family; Boy oh boy, it just doesn't let up for you all does it?!?... 2 kids with casts, 1 hubby comin' apart at the seams and 1 very frazzled mom!!! sigh,, it makes me tired reading about it all-... You guys need LOTS of prayers!! I will pray that God sends his mercy and shows you all the good things that are coming from these trials. Also, I will pray for the people evaluating Ben to be clear and compassionate with their results. And for Ben to feel comfortable enough with his learning to absorb it all. Maybe his being laid up in the wheel chair will slow him down enough??? I'll be checking back to see how it all goes. Love to all-

Hi Thomas family! Hey I have not been faithful at signing guestbooks and want to apologize for not doing so. How are you Jeff? And how about Ben's MRI? I'd ask Stacy myself but with those "hippa" laws she just can't say anything (even though she knows us both) Anyhow, been saying extra prayers for the Thomas family... God has just laid it on my heart to do so. May you be filled with God's grace. Love and hugs

Hello Thomas Family and Happy New Year! My heart breaks that Ben had to be held down to have his IV put in. I think one of the worst side effects of cancer is the mistrust these kids have of everyone. They never know when someone is going to grab them and poke them with needles. It breaks your heart. 2005 is going to bring all of you good health and I have no doubt Ben's CT scans will be clear. The Greegor Family

I am so afraid of treatment ending. congratulations, you were so strong and we are so glad the abnormality was a sinus infection. I'd love to talk to you some time, email me if you'd like to talk.

Hi Ben!

We're so glad to hear that the "bump" is gone! It was so great to see you and your Daddy last week at the relay - you did awesome! I bet you and your brother and sisters are having a ball in your new pool - how cool! Did you hear a car beeping in front of your house on Friday afternoon? It was us on our way home from Benjamin's Wish Trip. He asked the driver to go past your house to see if you all might be outside - he wanted to wave to you! Your family is going to have the best time when you go on your trip soon! Our Benjamin had so much fun - he will probably try to hide in your suitcase so he can go again - haha!! Well, anyway we hope you're all having a great summer and we hope to see you soon! Say hi to your family for us.

Hey,spiderman
How are youdoing? I know it's rough being in the hospital.
This is probably a big surprise because Aunt Kelli is never on the computer because Nathan, Matthew, and Mckenzie always are. Though don't forget though I'm your best aunt and daddy best sister and mommies best sister-n-law. Ha Ha. We've haven't seen the superhero in awhile and we miss you. Baseball season is coming, Nathan would like you to come watch. You Hang in there it's almost done and remember we love you guys, call for anything, maybe!!!! Oh, spring break is coming, Mckenzie is coming to play with you. I think mommy and daddy would like Noah and Nathan too. Our prayers are with you. Ben, call Aunt Kelli whenever. You take care.

Hi Thomas family!

I hope you all don't have to be in the hospital for too long! We'll be in soon for our Benjamin's next chemo. We'll look for you when we get there. I think we were neighbors the last time we were in, but you guys were headed home that night. Take care!

PS Our Benjamin has a web page now too, and we didn't realize until after we started it that the boys have almost the same address. One night when I was typing our Benjamin's address in I forgot the "j" and up popped your Ben's web page. Now we check in to see how your little guy is doing too.

Hey Ben & family,
I miss you guys. It seems as though I have been working about 90 hours a week this last month. Now that the home & garden show is over and our radio and yellow page ads are done I hope to free up some time to "RACE" Jeff again and see Ben during his treatments. Karen and the girls had a great time with you guys at Pizza Cottage (of course I was working).
Sure was nice being "wailed on" by Ben last week. I used to think, I will sure be glad when he grows out of this phase where he is constantly hitting. Then, things changed. He didn't feel like hitting or even walking around. It was a noticed absence in Bens nature. I can honestly say it was a very welcome "beating". I will only thank GOD from now on for Bens physical attention (it's his way of expressing friendship as a young boy). My prayer is that one day I will be beat by Bens son, too.
God is awesome!
Love you guys!

Randy

Hi Ben!
Your mom tells me that you are feeling much better and having a good time running around and playing. That makes me really glad! I hope the weather gets better soon so that you can play outside. I want to play outside too, but there is still too much snow and mud! I almost lost a shoe in it! Uncle Don and I think about you all the time. Love you!
