Krista, It's like 10 years since your son was diagnosed, you left and my first time to sign this guest book; your family has been through so much and your son is a remarkable young man. I just want to say that I still look at your site to check on the progress Matthew has made. We still pray for your son and family. Have a wonderful spring!

Krista,
I am so glad to see that everything is going well for Matt and you have been able to keep the site up!!
Things have changed for me over the past few months. I have been diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma and I too have set up a Caringbridge site - www.caringbridge.org/visit/darrinficke
I've gone through the first cycle of chemo and will have a few more before I get my Autologous Stem Cell Transplant. I am participating in a Stage 2 trial for a possible cure drug for MCL. I am currently on medical leave from Arrow for 6 months and I am keeping a great attitude. It's encouraging to see all the success Matt has had!

Take care

Glad everything is going well. My 12 yo niece had BMT 7/11 this year for CML. So far so good. She had rare side effect from all the drugs and has terrible weakness in her legs. She uses a walker and wears leg braces. Her preliminary bma and spinal tap showed no abnormal cells. Waiting on the final resutls. Reading your journal gives me such hope for Marisa's future. I will pray you continue to do well and look forward to another good update.

Dear Matt & family

2 years, WOW, how wonderful for you all. Matt: HAPPY RE-BIRTHDAY. Krista: Thank you for your encouraging words through our journey. I can't wait to reach the anniversaries, and as you've said, see things as a distant memory. Both Matt and Adam, along with countless others, have shown me what strength actually is. We need to remember the good that's come out of this, and believe it or not, there has been some. May God continue to keep you healthy Matt. By the way, I hear you play lacrosse, Adam can't wait to start.

Sincerely,

Dear Krista,

On behalf of Tim Kenny, Chairman of St Baldricks Foundation and my fellow Board Members, I thank you and your family for your outstanding participation in this year's St Baldricks Day 2005. Matthew was one of 14 children from the Western Suffolk County region honored at 5 of our Long Island events and at 2 of our Manhattan events. With the gracious generosity of the people of Long Island, we are once again able to say we have broken the record for the number of heads shaved at one event (601 in Northport alone!). Your efforts and the efforts of many other children, men and women attending our Napper Tandy events have raised an astounding $ 380,000.00 for the Children's Oncology Group. As you know, this fine medical and research team has forged far ahead of any other team and have made such amazing progress in Childhood Cancer Research.

It was truly a pleasure to meet your fine boys and the rest of the "Shiny Scalps" of Northport. Wishing Matthew and his hero Michael the best of health and happiness. And thank you for your kind and dedicated support.

Sincerely,
John McKenna

Dear Krista, Mark, Matt, Mike and Kate,
I'm one of the knuckleheads that got to know of you through Arrow, so only Krista knows who I am. I have never signed the guestbook before, but I've been here a lot. I'll direct this to Matt and the kids. I've watched the progess with hopefulness and prayers that things would go your way, and it looks like maybe prayers do get answered. Matt, you share a name with my son (Matt, duh...) and so do you Mike (Brian. But his middle name is Mike). And Kate, I'm sorry, but I'm not having any more kids. Right? Your courage throughout this ordeal has been more inspirational than you can know. On days when I don't feel like making the appointment for the early morning blood donations, I remind myself how blessed I am. I often think of you then, and happy about it or not, I get my sorry butt out of bed and do this small thing that I can. Largely though the information I learned here, I got a real appreciation for how important that can be. We also make an all out effort, silently on your behalf, to make the blood drives at Arrow someting that people take to heart, and maybe they'll become regular doners throughout the year too. Your hopeful message has had an effect, and you should all know that out there, there are people thinking of you and doing these small things to help you and those like you. By opening up this window to your lives, you have set all that in motion, and if there's any measure of satisfaction that you take away from this ordeal, know that it has brought those people together to act in perhaps the only way they can.
You still have to do your homework, and it's still not nce to tease people or cheat when playing Scrabble. Do you know wht Scrabble is? Of course not, Nintendo doesn't make that game. Well, anyway, NO CHEATING!
Have a happy St Patrick's Day, and ever after.
Now I believe I'll have me a pint.

Just a quick note to say hello from the rainy city Seattle. I love your notes Krista - you are doing a great job of keeping this website up and adding great pics. The kids look great. I am glad to hear of Disneyland - we did that for Zachs wish as well. What a great note you entered about remembering where you were 2 years ago-nobody knows what we feel as parents and the reality of losing a child until you are faced with it-we have some great stories of recovery and life! All is well here - take care!

What a beautiful tribute, Krista. I know all too well the feeling of not being able to absorb all of this, although I simply can't imagine it being your child. Husband Mark continues to do well post transplant, he is at Day 71 today. Next week begins his 75-80 Day series of tests to prepare for release from SCCA/Hutch.
What a TREAT to see such beautiful pictures!
I pray that Matt continues to his recovery and cure, and that your family is continually blessed.

Hello, i was watching a couple of new records being set at the Olympics today, so thought i would look up some slightly stranger ones instead of some jokes.

Here's a couple;

Most spoons balanced on the face
Tim Johnston (USA) (b. 1 January 1992), was able to balance on his face (one on each ear, two on each cheek, three on his chin, two on his lips, one on his nose and three on his forehead) and balance them for 30 seconds at on May 28, 2004.

British pub landlord Garry Turner clipped 153 ordinary wooden clothes pegs on his face at the WH Smith bookshop in York, Yorkshire, UK, on September 28, 2002

Hi Krista and family, Was so excited to see your new post and hear how well Matty is doing. Be sure to do an update when you return from Seattle. Its a very moving experience to go back for the one year follow up and see all the new people in the waiting rooms just starting out. Each of us has come a long ways and we have so much to be thankful for. So many of my cml peers have lost their struggle with their SCT this last year--I am limping along slowly but steadily. I am still on 20 meds and will probably be for 2 to 4 more years it seems. Hopefully you were able to go to my site last month to see the big event of my year, Tasha's wedding in Portland Nov 1. I am also so happy your friends contributed to caring bridge. It has been a lifesaver for getting out news about my health and I am so grateful . Wishing all of you continued good health, hope and peace for the coming year. Jeannie-- a cml buddy out west

Even thought this is the first time appearing in the guest book, (Matt tried at home and it appears that it didn't make it) I want to let you know that we've kept up with Matthew's progress and are elated that things are going well. I hope you know that you and your family are in our hearts and prayers ... always.

Hello Mike and Matty,
How are you? We're gonna have fun playing lax this summer. My birthday is tomorrow June 22.I hope I get a Playstation 2.I really want another lax stick but I already have 5 and my mom and dad said I can only get the new netting that I really want.It is leather netting. I want it because it's easier to get a pocket in it and the pocket stays and it looks cool. Mrs. Pandolfi's class did a funny play and Miss Whaley sat on me. She sits on me alot. Miss Whaley and I are rivals but I still like her. She tried to make me dance yesterday when we had cupcakes for my birthday. I'm sure you'll be home soon. Love Jake

HURRAY to THE BOLAND FAMILY! MARK, KRISTA, MICHAEL, MATTHEW & KATHRYN
At long last your time in Seattle is finally coming to an end. Hip, Hip Hurray! A toast to Michael for his great marrow and bravery to support his little brother, Matthew for his AMAZING 7 year old perserverence with always a smile on his face in all the pictures at the hospital, and around and about the town of Seattle, Kate for arriving in the Nick of Time to give a healthy dose of sisterly hugs and kisses to her brothers and Mom and Dad, Dad Mark for loving his family and taking all the boys who visited his family in Seattle from Long Island to Hooters, Minature Golf, Fishing, Northwest Parks, and Skateboard Parks, and Mom Krista for loving her family and... keeping all who pray for their son Matthew's speedy recovery updated with family photos from their travels throughout Seattle, and the most well written updates on their son's treatment via the Web I have ever read. Even a layman such as myself can understand.. An amazing feat Krista, but then again I always thought you were one of the best writers I had ever run across and the Caring Bridge Matty's Update Site just exemplifies what I have always known..

What a wonderful family you and Mark have made for yourselves!

Hip Hip Hurray for Very Brave Matty Boland as he recovers... and here's hoping and praying he quickly moves from "Newborn" status to a rough and tumble playful 7 year old boy again during the reenergizing summer months.
What's that expression, Snails and Puppy Dog Tails....that is what Little Boys are Made Of
The Long Island summer will give him additional Vitamin D to help the healing process a long for sure!!

God Bless you all,and always remember the Rainbow sent to you from All the Angels Above on that Special Fund Raiser night.
All our love, Christine, Joe and Robert

Krista and Mark,
Barbara, Rick Pollina and I were just talking in the hall (you know, at the top of the stairs) about when the 100 days would be up and hoping that you would be able to come home "on time". It was great to read the most recent journal and see that you are brave enough to start sending things home. Your journals are the best! It is our Monday morning routine---check the site for news about Matthew. We talk about him while getting our coffee and through lunch. We will miss MONDAYS WITH MATTHEW but it will be a good thing.

We are so happy to read of Matty's improvement, that his numbers are rising, and his energy level is back. What a roller coaster ride you all have been on!
It is amazing to read your journal, learning about all the progress, setbacks, and hurdles Matty, and your entire family experiences on a daily basis!
Each and everyone of you are so strong.
We will pray that big brother's Red Blood cells, out muscle Matty's stong willed, diligent White Blood Cells!! As you suggested, "Boy's will be Boy's", and the wrestling match continues!!

Dear Mark, Krista, Michael, Matt and Kate,

We are sorry to hear that Matt is back in the hospital and we pray that he will be out of there ASAP. Just knowing that he is getting the best care possible - is a comfort. As tough as the day to day ups and downs are thank God that these are the "Good Old Days". It probably wasn't that many years ago when doctors didn't know what they know today. Tests that are standard procedure today weren't available, medicines have improved and there is so much more promise with everyday because of what we "doctors, researchers, medical community, Mothers and Fathers that are very observent, etc.)have learned. Try to keep up your spirits - just know that you are not alone - we love you and continue to pray for Matt and his family.

It's 6:45am in Northport and just checked the website before heading to work. It sounds like Matty has been working really hard to fight whatever has been brewing -such a tough kid, no wonder he is so great at all those rough and tumble sports (including jumping on the couch and chasing CB into little hiding places in the attic). We are there with you in spirit and send all our love. We hope Matty has gotten past the worst of this infection and will be back at the apartment ASAP. Hi Guys: WE are all praying and pulling for you. Watching
you guys go through this puts life in prospective for all of
us. Whenever one of my kids complains about something stupid, I remind them of you all. Deanna and Joe both say
to tell them they are thinking of you also. If there is anything else I can do, please let me know. Hey, I'm pushy! Who else could get that collection from this group?

We love you and miss you. We are looking forward to seeing you when you get home. Happy Mother's Day Krista - Michael, Matthew and Kate are very blessed to have such a special Mom. We're very proud of you (and of course Mark even though it isn't Father's Day). Uncle Tom spoke with Nanny and your Mom today to wish them a Happy Mother's Day - all is well. Take care and keep up the good work.

Hey Matty
I was in the hospital this week and saw my friend, Dr. Pottso from the Clown Care Unit. He is actually headed to your hospital in a week. We told him to please look for you and he has a letter I wrote. He is a funny clown and a good juggler too but has very weird hair. If you are in clinic look for the clowns and your letter.

Hello Boland Family,

I just spent the last hour looking at all Matthew's pictures and reading Krista's journal entries. What an amazing family you are. The pictures have truly captured the spirit in Matthew's eyes and the unbelievable bond between the boys. They have forever touched our hearts. Our prayers and good wishes are with you all. We look forward to seeing you all this summer.

That was truely amazing and inspriational to feel so many people in one place, not knowing eachother yet all there for the same cause; which made everyone a friend. Matthew, you and your family are much loved. The event was truely heartwarming and the only things missing were: You, Mom, Dad, Michael and Kate! We can't wait for you to come home! Dear Matthew (Mom, Dad, Michael and Kate also),

Matt, I have to tell you - I can't believe how one little boy (even though he has the most wonderful family anyone can imagine) can be so special and do so much good for soooo many grown-ups. Yesterday we attended the benefit in your honor. WOW! Double WOW! You must really be a TV superstar or a sports hero that I don't know about. When Uncle Tom and I walked into the large ballroom it was amazing, it was packed with people. You can't imagine how crowded it was. It looked as crowded as a baseball stadium when your favorite team is playing. Everyone was there for you (your Mom and Dad, Michael and Kate also). If one little boy can touch that many people and everyone was really glad to be doing something special because they care and love you and want you to get well real quick and come home - Matthew you have a career ahead of you. I don't know exactly what it will be - but if you can make people see how important it is that we all are here to love each other and be special in each others lives in fun times and in serious times. WOW! Krista - your pictures are wonderful (even for the PC challenged). Keep up the good work Mark, Krista, Michael, Matthew and Kate. We love you and miss you.

Love,
Aunt Lynn and Uncle Tom

Matt, I did go to your shutterbug site--enjoyed all the pictures you have there. I am so glad you are out of the hospital and able to get to the parks and eat real homecooked food that MOM makes. There is so much to do in Seattle and I bet you will enjoy going to Green Lake to play a;nd ride bikes. I think you are doing great and wanted you to know I am close to 1 year post-transplant and feeling much better. Have your mom pull up my webpage and you can see what I am excited about this Spring. Best of luck in getting all your fluids down, your calories up and all those pills swallowed. It does get much easier and you have been a real trooper. a bmt peer--Jeannie M

Howdy! We got your website from Alexander Cook-Goodfriend's site, and could not resist checking in. We looked at your photos, and I think it's a pretty fair bet that Matthew is the cutest freckled-faced lil' guy I have ever seen! He is so lucky to have a brave brother like Michael.

My daughter Katy Rose had a bone marrow transplant in 1999 at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. She is nine years old now, and except for a few minor complications is doing great and is the light of our lives. You can visit her website at www.katyhubbell.com to read all about her.

I read in your update that you are concerned about Matthew's eating...not to worry! Katy too, refused to eat for at least 2 months after her transplant. She said that things she had liked before somehow tasted different. She would only eat yogurt and cheese sticks for almost 6 weeks, but then gradually started to add new foods, and now is my best eater.

You folks take care, and know that there are many families "out there" who have walked this long road before and will keep you lifted up in prayer.

Hi Bolands,
Just checking in to see how Matty is doing. He is remembered in all of Nicole's prayers and ours as well. Both your sons are so brave!!! Nikki wants me to tell you that you are lucky and missed the snow storm today. I think it was about 5 or 6 inches but this is strange in April!! She just finished her steroid pulse and our weekly trip to Sloan but luckily before the snow began. Stay strong little Matty!!!

Matthew, I don't know if you remember us. We are Uncle Billy Els' parents (Oma & Opa) that is german for gramma and grandpa. We met you at Uncle Billys this summer for Quincys birthday.

WE are soooo happy to hear that you are doing so well. Are you getting excused from shoolwork?? You know what - if they give you schoolwork have your dad do it for you (maybe not if he gets it wrong it will make you look bad)

We are looking forward to your quick recovery and to seeing you again maybe at Uncle Billys and Aunt Kim.

We love you all.

Hello,
We just wanted to say Hello, my name is Tammy, and my daughter Emma was diagnosed with ALL in June 2000. Her situation is a bit different from your sons, she underwent chemotherapy for 26 months instead of a transplant. She is off treatment now, and doing well. That is our prayer for your son also. Please know that we are keeping you and your precious son in our prayers and praying he will start making those much needed platelets and wbc. Please do not hesitate to contact if you need anything. Hang in there, and take comfort in the fact that there are many praying for you all. We can't wait to read the update saying that your counts are up!!

Heard some good news today from Jackie. She sent the link and I've been reading all of the entries in this guest book and realizing certainly nothing I could write would really add much. Hugs and Kisses to all the Bolands in Seattle (and Kate in NY),
We were thrilled to hear that things are going (even a little bit) better than you expected. We know that our prayers are being answered.

The hardest lesson I ever learned was to understand that everything happens for a reason. We don't want to accept that while we are going through a bad situation but once we learn it - we never forget it. I'll tell you a little secret that I found very helpful. When I find that I'm going through a difficult time, I've changed my praying habits. Now instead of asking God to take away the difficulty - I ask Him to teach me what I have to learn QUICKLY so it will pass. Somehow, someway He always listens and helps me to get through. I know you will all be fine.

We love you and even if you don't feel it right now with all the love and prayers being said for you - don't worry - We've got you covered.

Love,
Aunt Lynn and Uncle Tom

Hi to the Whole Boland family - We love you and are praying for you. This note is to Matthew.

Hi Matt,
I couldn't wait to write to you today. I wanted to thank you for being so brave and smart and for teaching me a lot of things. I don't understand how a boy your age can be so smart. You know what is important and you understand a lot of things that adults (your parents, doctors, nurses, teachers, family and friends) don't always get.

I know you are going through a lot of stuff that isn't always fun. But when I looked at your pictures and read the journal where your parents told us about what is going on in Seattle - I was amazed. Your Mom and Dad are very proud of you. They said that you and Michael are very brave and you are doing whatever the doctors and nurses ask you to do - even if it isn't fun or easy. WOW. Yet when you had the chance to go to the playground or skateboard park or the beautiful waterfall park - you knew that you were supposed to enjoy that time and you did it. WOW! You are really special.

Have patience with us adults - Matty, we aren't always as smart as little boys. But if you keep teaching us - there is hope and we will learn.

Love (and keep them busy and laughing)
Aunt Lynn

Matty, Michael, Krista, Mark and Grammy,

We love you and are praying for your health, healing and speedy return to your family and friends on the East Coast. Uncle Tom is visiting Nanny and Boppie today and tomorrow - don't worry Grammy everyone will be fine and you are where you belong.

Mark and Krista you are truly blessed - your kindness and love (not only for your children, but for all of us who care for all of you) pours out out in your messages. We thank you. Know that our prayers are always answered.

Michael I wish I had a big brother as wonderful as you. Matty and Kate will never forget how brave you are.

Matty I hear that you are keeping everyone busy and laughing at what an amazing trooper you are. And I understand that you even had a special prayer to say. That's wonderful since Jesus loves it when little children talk to Him - no matter what they have to say He listens and really enjoys it. Keep talking to Him.

I'm sure Kate is enjoying her Nana and Poppa almost as much as they are enjoying her.

We love you and miss you. Keep writing.

Dear Krista and family, Im back from Colorado. Check out our pictures on my website and my update with my liver. www.caringbridge.com/or/jeanniematthews. We were there for that huge snowstorm which was quite beautiful.
Am so glad things are progressing well with the boys. You have become so knowledgeable and explain things so clearly for your friends back home. It sure brings back the memories for me. This next 2-3 weeks are real importatnt as you well know--lots of time to watch videos, do craft projects and walk around the halls to keep those lungs clear. I'll send ideas later for foods that go down easily. Hope Matty does not have the bad mouth sores. Its so nice that you have 3 caregivers now to help with the slack. Be sure to get out a bit with your husband for some r and r-----you will cherish it after granma goes home. I know spring is coming to Seattle soon and all 4 of you will soon be walking around Green Lake and the Japanese park . Hope all is working out well with Childrens Hosp--I can relate to you seeing all these sick kids and learning to be thankful that you have 2 healthy boys with a strong supportive family. Please ask if you have any questions for me. Matty is following my course pretty much except I did not have the radiation. You are all trooopers-keep it up. MUch love your way. Jeannie Matthews

I'm so proud of all of you - the pictures look great and I'm thrilled you and the boys are seeing the sites. The 'caringbridge' is a great site and I love the background of fish. Not sure if it's related, but it reminds me of the 'fish philosophy' - if you don't know about it take a look at www.fishphilosophy.com. The site is about inspiration and having fun no matter what the chore. If the fish background wasn't by design related to this, it sure seems to fit. PS - icecream in Seattle is awesome too! Hugs and love to all - keep the updates coming - Ange
