It has been many, many years since we have spoken, but just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you!! I had tears of sadness and then tears of joy after reading about your amazing son's journey, what a long hard fight it has been for you and your family. He truly is a hero!!!! I will continue to keep Michael and your family in my prayers! I hope everything goes well with the surgeries! You're in the home stretch!!

i am so happy to hear your little boy is doing well. our 8 year old little girl is suffering from rhabdo. we are living the nightmare. i have questions if you ever can talk. it started in her face under her cheekbone in the pterygoid muscle and grew to almost 6 cm extending into her cranium and down to nasal cavity. there is no chance for surgery. she has completed 6 weeks of radiation and 19 weeks of chemo so far. you can visit talbertfamilyfoundation.org "team cecilia" to read her story. please contact me if you are willing. thank you and God bless.

Dear Diss Family,

I am here from Ian Davideit's guest book. What a handsome little guy Michael is! I especially enjoyed seeing his First Communion picture and reading about how hard he worked to prepare for it.

I am glad that Mikey is doing well medically and able to be "a normal" seven year old boy. I have just paused, here, at my keyboard, to say a prayer that he will continue to be healthy, sweet, and "normal" in every way. God bless him!

I could not see the picture of Mikey with his sister, Olivia, but I am glad that you have her, and I am, of course, glad that Kellie and Brian Davideit, and their family, has the new baby girl. God bless you all!

Happy August Birthday To Michael! May he have many, many more.

Grace and peace,

~Colette~

It is Halloween 2005. This is my first time signing the journal. I am Mikey's Grandmother. I cannot believe that it was 3 years ago today that my "little guy" started his ordeal. We all have come a long way since that day. Mikey has grown into a wonderful young boy who is so special to us in every way. He stole our hearts from the day he was born. He has given us strength that we never thought we had. My son and daughter-in-law are the most loving and caring parents. And we thank them for the joy they all bring into our lives. Mikey now has an adorable baby sister named Olivia Ann that he can teach all of his special traits to. I would like to thank all who have been so concerned for my grandson the past 3 years and to request that you please continue to pray for his continued good health. And I will pray for all of the special children that have to deal with similar circumstances. I believe in the "Power of Prayer". Sincerely, Mikey's Grandma.

Hey Diss Family,

I have a very good understanding of what You guys went through and are still going through. My family and I went through that horrible process of oral cancer with my father when I was in High School. But I can only imagine how much more agonizing it must be as a parent to see your helpless little child have to suffer through that. I also as you may know have a child with some medical issues, and my heart aches everyday that I see him suffer because of it. I have never met your little Mikey but from this site and hearing Big Mike talk about him at work there is no question that he is a special young man and always will be.

I know that God has a plan for us and many times we would like to take His plan and tell Him to shove it. But God is always good. It is His grace and love that makes everything worth while. He really never will give us more than we can handle as long as we ask Him to help us.

Thank you for sharing your story. I will pray for Mikey's continued health and happiness often. God Bless You!

Hi, Mikey and Mom and Dad,

Just to introduce myself, I'm Kathleen, and my one and only Grandson, Killian, was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma on October 8, 2001, one week after his sixth birthday. Just like you he had a sudden mysterious illness that turned into a huge battle! He had every kind of treatment too (at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida) and is in remission now. He has to have the whole work-up - labs and CT scans - every six months for eight more years. I hope the doctors there in Hackensack realize what Warriors you guys are! We were living in a tiny little town here in Florida called Micanopy (Pronounced Mick-an-oh'-pee) and we said Killian was the Warrior Prince of Micanopy since it is named after a famous Seminole Indian Chief - very brave and determined! He decided he was going to kick that old Rhabdo's butt, and with the help of lots of prayers and lots of chemo and surgery and radiation, so far so good. This is his third, and sadly, final time at Camp Boggy Creek coming up in June. We'll miss everybody but it's time to give someone else a spot. :) Do you have a Hole in the Wall Gang Camp near you? I know there is one in Connecticut. Well, I will just add your name to my list of strong little ones who are fighting this stinker of a cancer. Question for Mom - Are the bracelets you mentioned the blue ones that say "I AM...?" We just got ours in January and everybody wants to know what they are for...
God Bless you and your family. Killian's Grammy

Hi, I am glad to hear everything is going well for you. I have a 6 year old nephew who has orbital rhabdomyosarcoma. He was diagnosed at 6 months of age. He has since relapsed 2 times and has just relapsed again. This time the cancer has spread to his brain. He has gone through chemo and radiation, and quite a few major surgeries, including one to remove his eye. It is amazing how these children see the good in everything, never complaing or feeling sorry for themselves. He takes everything in stride, even explaining to us that everything happens for a reason and that he is an angel that god sent to us. He does what he can to keep himself busy and keep his life normal. They never expected him to make it to his 5th birthday, they told us it would be a miracle if he survived and the treatments that they were giving him were just buying him some time and keeping the cancer from spreading hoping that they would be able to find some new treatment. As luck and god would have it, he went into remission, but it was short lived. These childern are miracles and such heros. God bless you and your son.

Dear Denice,

How very touched I was to see that you wrote about Dana in YOUR journal. I am a friend of hers and throughout her struggle, I often jumped to your site to see how Michael was doing. The first time I read your journal I cried for an hour – I have a 5 year old boy myself and can’t even imagine what you and he and your family must be going through. It is so unfair – especially for a child to have to go through this.

I thank God he is doing good now and pray he will remain in good health and beat this beast. I’m sure it must be scary for you since Dana passed away from the same cancer but in talking to her and learning more and more about this cancer over the years – young kids have a better chance than adults. I see pictures of Michael and see how he is a strong boy, a fighter and I can see he is certainly going to beat this thing. And now he has a very special angel to watch over him and a few more people praying for him through friends of Dana. Wishing you all a very Happy Holiday and an especially Healthy New Year.

She told me this summer all the good and happy things about her life, she savors every moment. On my list I can attest to the loving wife, mother and friend that she is.

I see the pictures of your handsome son, I am so happy that he has been able to attend kindergarten. How wonderful! And remission - that is the greatest news. It was so nice to read about his enthusiasm for Halloween. I hope that his strength improves so that he will enjoy all the holidays and even some sleigh riding this year. God Bless.

To your parents, they are also remarkable. The postive support and caring words that your mother always finds to speak to all of us amaze me more each time. No matter what she is going through in her personal battles, she always finds a warm smile and positive reinforcement to all of us. Happy New Birthday to Michael.. my son also went through the rhabdo nightmare.. he is Ty-Michael.. our dx date was 11-11-99 off of tx date was 10-13-00.. and he remains in remmision..
As i read your journal today i cant help but remeber the last day of chemo.. our last stay in the hospital but mostly the thought that MY safty net had just been taken away and how was i going to take this boy home who spent an entire year in the hospital and know what to do.. somehow we figure that out. As we walked down the halls that last day ..with a strange fear happiness mixture .. i asked his doctor now what? his reply "see you in a month" a month oh god a whole month of no doctors touching him .. a whole month of not knowing if something was starting to grow.. a month of torture for us parents a month of fun in the florida sun for my little man. Mike fought so hard he had the VAC & T 54 week protocall .. it was far from an easy fight now My Mike is nine , strong healthy plays tackle football for the 3rd year in a row.. we are almost at our three year birthday. I wish i could say that the anxiety is gone... but its not..not for me ( a mom!)
Michael doesn't talk much about cancer, treatment or all the "fun" stuff that goes along with this..he remains a child a wild nine year old boy who was able by the grace of god to kick some rhabo butt~ he plays and lives and i mean lives ... he is so full of life.. when he does share with friends about his cancer .no one really believes this big healthy kid was ever sick. Every year we have a birthday party for mike one on his real birthday 2-2-94 and then again 10-13-... the second birthday is the real gift.. we call it his Un-Birthday party ( alice in wonderland) but we all know that we are celebrating his life... funny we all have a birthday but only our special kids have a day to really celebrate LIFE.
So again i wish your Michael a Happy Un-Birthday ..with many more to come!!

kicking rhabdo butt!

Hi Michael-- your mom left a message for my family on my daughters caring bridge web site. She was 4 years old when she went through her treatment for rhabdo too. Now she is 6 and a half and a spunky soon to be first grader! I looked at the pictures your mom posted and you are too cute! You are so close to being done-- before you know it mom and dad-- your focus will shift-- soon you won't be thinking about your little sweetie and his cancer 24 hours a day-- I know its hard to believe. But, I've been where you are-- he's gonna beat this and soon enough he will be getting on the school bus for the first time! Sending prayers your way.

Hello Michael and family,
We're thankful to know you and hopefully be able to encourage you; we've recently been the way you are traveling now and have come out the other side. Praise the Lord that we made it and you will too!

Keep your thoughts positive and you eye on the finish. Know that the treatment schedule is tough but there is help along the way. Low blood counts are expected with the chemo but the whole blood transfusions will give you new strength and energy. Don't forget to check on the decadron in combination with Zofran just before you go home following a round of chemo; I think you will feel better. We're praying for you and watching your page; good job Mom!

The Martin family sends our best/
