No it isn't fair, Michele. It sucks. Know that I keep you in my prayers, fervently praying for Anthony's miracle, believing that it will come at any time. Love you all so much, and am striving to find "the cure." May this be our year! ♥

I love you!

Just read your entry and I was glad for it. You are brave to put into words your feelings because that helps other people too. Each day you and Mike do what you do shows other people how hard this journey is but you continue on. Your honesty, bravery, courage, faith to do what you have done and continue to do makes others do the same. But it stinks and this "journey" should not be like this. You know you are loved and cared about but this journey still "stinks". I pray that times will become much easier for all of you. I love you all.
Carla <savta10@aol.com>
Toms River, NJ USA - Monday, January 5, 2009 8:12 AM CST
There is nothing I can possibly say that can take away the anger, hurt and resentment you are feeling. The feelings you have are justified, and I hope putting them into words for all to read was, at the very least, therapeutic for you. I cannot imagine what your Christmases have been like, let alone your life on a daily basis.
Please know, Michele (and Mike) that there are so many people thinking of you...praying for Anthony...praying for you...praying for the day that eagerly-awaited, much-needed miracle is bestowed on Anthony.
With loving thoughts of you and your family as we begin a new year....
xoxo
PS Loved the Christmas card....BEAUTIFUL PICTURE.

Michelle,
Thank you for your honesty and courage to put your feelings in writing. I too, feel the same way about Christmas since our children were placed on this journey. At a time when the Potts' family should be joyful (for our new family addition)... I feel like you and that is OK...

It's hard sometimes to achieve the right tone in the guestbook entries. I'm sure we're sometimes too cheerful and upbeat when you're dealing with the reality of Anthony's day-to-life and yours, and then sometimes we're too somber when you're on top of things and feeling that you can handle it all, wanting to focus on feeling hopeful. Just know that whether we're hitting the right note or not, there's never a right or wrong note for you. I always think the benefit of CaringBridge is that when some in your every day life might metaphorically pat you on the head and tell you "it's going to be okay," this gives you a place to come and say that it's definitely not okay when that's what you're feeling.

Merry Christmas to the Tomaino Family!
Chele - you sound like you can use a girls night...
(Mike, can we steal your woman for a few hours?)
Hang in there kiddo...
The reality of this life sucks. There, I said it.
That is why we have to believe in a Heaven...
and you have absolutely earned your wings!
Kiss those babies of yours on the head...and try to remember the miracles that exist in your home EVERYDAY...
and how much credit you need to give YOURSELF giving God a helping hand in that.
Love you,
Pam

Michele.... it's NOT fair. Not at all. :(

Patty Coughlin <pcoug@optonline.net>
Howell, NJ USA - Tuesday, December 30, 2008 9:26 PM CST
And I hear you, too. Each year, I care less about the trappings and more about the real meaning of Christmas. Jessus was born in a stall, and we put enough lights up to rival the star! But the point is that He came to right all the wrongs, and for all that we may tire of waiting for that to be realized, I am convinced that it will be worth it all when we see Jesus.

No, life's not fair. I think of all the healthy people out there, murdering, stealing, cheating, raping ... and they don't even get sick in prison most of the time. No, this life is not fair at all. But then again, who said it was?

I think that's the real glory of Heaven. There, everything is as it should be. Justice instead of chaos. Peace instead of conflict. And it makes me wonder why I even fight so hard to stay here! :)

Loving you all, and still praying each day for Anthony's miracle.

Hey Michelle, I hear you. I cannot blame you for feeling "it's not fair"; it certainly isn't. I pray for that miracle for Anthony~~~someday very soon I pray. I don't think many of us can even fathom what you and Mike go through every single day; you always make it look so easy. Thinking of you and still praying for that miracle. Hoping the New Year brings wonderful things to you and yours (and I don't mean material things!!!)

Dear Michele - Our thoughts and prayers are always with you and your family. Do not apologize for feeling the way you do. You have so much more on your plate than anyone we know, but the dear Lord has given you extremely strong shoulders to carry this burden. And carry it well is what you do. May the new year bring you and yours everything you want and everything you pray for.

Hi Michele - I have been looking for an entry to see how Christmas went for you. I am sorry that it was such a difficult day for you, but not surprised. I think that for so many people Christmas is disappointing. I can remember times when life wasn't what I wished it to be and all I wanted was to vault over the whole Christmas season.
Be patient with yourself. Why wouldn't you feel low during a season when everything is supposed to be "perfect" and everyone happy? In truth, Christmas is rarely perfect for anyone, and you have many more challenges than most. I wish you strength and peace in the New Year. Blessings,

A week later, I get to read this wonderful update! I'm so happy to hear of all your children's gains, but telling us of setbacks is just food for prayer, not lack of it! As for the talking, you know that I believe that he going to open up one day. As for the food, that really is tremendous! I remember when my daddy had his stroke and could eat at first, but then got where he just wanted his bolus feedings. To go back the other way - to solids, is just a great testimony to Anthony's determination to return to normal. I truly believe that it will come.
Loving you all - so grateful that Matt and Laura are doing so well. I remember you telling us how much damage was in play with him at transplant, and yet, he is proving that nothing is too hard for the Lord!

Carolyn Wyman <sythismom@yahoo.com>
Belding, MI www.youprayforlife.com - Friday, December 12, 2008 2:05 PM CST
Hello All,

I am so happy to read the update and hear how much Anthony is improving. I can imagine that he would prefer the PB&J, and the oreo's etc. I'd do well for that, too. Now if you try to give him pureed spinach or brussel sprouts - watch out! (Actually I like both - just not pureed!)

Your children, Laura and Matt in particular, are no different from most children their ages when it comes to sibling rivalry. It is a pure sign of their "normalcy."

I pray that you all will have a wonderful Christmas this year and that the New Year will bring nothing but Joy to you and the whole Mauro/Tomaino clan.

Fondly,

Marylin M. Bailey

Brick, NJ USA - Wednesday, December 10, 2008 10:50 PM CST
Oh, Michelle, you're so right. I remember so many times when progress on everything except one new skill stopped when one of the children was learning a new skill, and I'm sure that's what's happening now. I know from my own granddaughter how closely tied nutritional therapies can be to speech therapies, and nutritional issues to speech ones. I bet Anthony truly is making gains in speech, in the muscles and coordination that he will need, but it's just not apparent in actual words spoken yet.

Happy belated Thanksgiving to you all too. I am so grateful to read the progress ANthony is making. I remember when we three were the only ones who believed he would talk and knew everything we were doing and saying. So glad to here about Matt and Laura too. I send my love to you all. And my prayers are always with you.

Toms River, NJ USA - Sunday, November 30, 2008 7:57 PM CST
Mike and Michele, pleasse don't think that the lack of progress discourages us from believing that Anthony, Matt, and Laura will live 100% free of MLD and all its effects. Whether by a miracle of God out of heaven or through a breakthrough in science, we expect nothing less from the Lord. No, He doesn't owe us this, and we cannot earn it in any way, but His mercy and compassion leave us sure of His desire for this.

Loving you all!

I know from our experiences with our granddaughter that hope and discouragement sometimes follow each other in rapid succession, but I'm happy to read about Anthony's advances in being able to take in nutrition by mouth. That's a big step, isn't it? Anthony and the rest of the family are all of course in my thoughts and prayers.

Mike - Thank you for the update. I can almost feel the weight that you are carrying as I read your message. There must be days when you would love to lay the burden down for an hour or two. Your kids are very fortunate to have parents who have the depth of love and the emotional, spiritual and physical maturity and stamina to carry on in the face of such great challenges. I pray that you will be blessed with progress on all fronts. Happy Thanksgiving!

Writing from Ca. again. This time for ten days. Can't wait to celebrate Halloween with the kids and see your pictures of all of you at Halloween. Can't wait to see Mike dressed up. Todd & Michele went to a party last week and they switched roles. He was dressed as her...a pregnant person...and she wore his baseball shirt. He has a beard and was the ugliest pregant person I ever saw. Oh, yes...you are right. They are having baby number 4 in March. We are all excited. I will then be savta11. I wanted to stop by and let you know that Anthony was of course still in my thoughts and prayers, as are you all. Because of my own granddaughter's difficulties, I know that change is sometimes accomplished in bursts of development alternating with plateaus or even some slippage back during times of illness or exhaustion. I hope you're in the midst of one of those bursts of development, but I know you'll master your disappointment if Anthony is in one of those other periods, too. He'll get there!

I would like to thank all the MLD-Stroyers, family, and supporters on all of the kind thoughts and prayers that have appeared on this site for my mom and I. The kidney transplant surgery went as well as can be expected. Mom's new kidney worked right away and is expected to give her a full life!! I'm doing well and will be recoverying at home for the next few weeks.
Mike and Michele, it was good seeing the whole crew together at the Pantaleo's. The kids looked great and we continue to pray each and everyday for their complete healing. Thanks for allowing me to use the kids site to thank the MLD family (a true Army on a mission).

Thanks to Michele for the prayer request and thanks to all who have prayed. The four bypasses had turned into five bypasses, which blew our minds even further. We are very pleased to say that he made it through surgery well and is out of ICU! (Boy, what that man won't do to get a family reunion and more importantly to see his grand-daughters.) He is not out of theb woods yet, so keep him in your prayers while praying for Anthony and the Zacks.

Thank you all again,
Sincerely,

Praying for Mr D and all the family. My daddy had that surgery in 1979, and it gave him 20 more years with us! Praying for at least that. And I will certainly be praying for Ed and his mom --- for quick recoveries and careful surgeons who do a perfect job.

And while I have His attention (!), I will continue to ask for Mr Anthony's talking --- time to let it all out, Ant!!!

Loving you all so much!

You're right Michele. As I read your post asking people to leave a message in the guestbook, I realized what it must feel like to spend precious time typing an update about the kids to then feel like maybe nobody is out there listening. Put me in the boat with the others who've posted before me...I too read your updates often but don't always leave a note. We think about your family often and the boys still talk about Anthony, the walk we participated in, how strong Anthony is to be fighting MLD. Your not far from many of our thoughts...it's like six degrees of separation : )

It was very interesting to read about your recent trip to Upledger. This form of therapy if really fascinating. It sounds like it helps Anthony immensly. So glad there are many different avenues for Anthony to take to aid in his 100% healing.

Hope you and Mike had a wonderful Anniversary. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are two of the most wonderful, caring, genuine people that I know. I admire you both. You are strong individuals. Hugs and kisses to all.

Love,

Just before I read this latest entry, I had been noticing again the dates when your children were all diagnosed and then had their transplants. I was thinking how hard those months must have been when you found out about Anthony's diagnosis and then got the news about your other two, too. I'm glad that this anniversary comes around with Laura and Matt doing so well and with Anthony making such progress and showing such promise.

Happy Anniversary! After getting your emails, I didn't think to look here for an update ... I hate missing them! I did sign up for alerts for your site, but it never has worked - yet. Anyway, you are so right - no couple should endure what you have. The Lord never intended this horror for us, and yet He had a plan to get us out of it - Jesus! Name above all names! It is on that name, that tender heart, that merciful mind, that I call for your children, knowing He will. I'm so sure of that!

I also hoped that the rash was allergies - but Nystatin would have cleared that up, I'm sure. Whatever it is, we are sure that the Lord is healing it - one way or another!

Chris Daughtry! Now, he's the man! My son can cover him perfectly (He can also cover Bon Jovi perfectly --- if they come to NJ, you're gonna have to go see! :) - yes, I'm shamelessly fond of my boys!).

And I'm shamelessly fond of all of you, our Jersey Fam! I had great hopes of going to see you this summer, since I didn't make the Walk, but God had another mission in mind. In His time ... Thank You, Lord!

Loving you all!

Michelle, I came across my mother's "health handbook"-her vitamin bible. I looked up rash's and you probably know this, but I will still share with you. Rashes's can be caused by allergies. I don't know Anthony's diet, but it says gluten-free diets(wheat, barley, oats & rye) help control rashes. If your interested in the details of the herbal/vitamin combinations, send me an email or call me and I can go over the many suggestions.

I'm so glad to hear about the differences that are being observed in Anthony by the therapists. I know that you believe your own impressions, but it's so nice to have them validated, too, isn't it? It seems that these observations also shortcut a difficult decision-making period, too, making that decision so much easier. I can't wait to hear about Anthony's progress into August and beyond.

Such a wonderful entry. I am so excited for all of you. Anthony is blessed to be born to two parents who never give up and really know their child. God is shinning down his love for you all and having you show the world there is no end to miracles if you believe.

As I sit here with my back aching, reading about your experiences, I'm thinking I'll have my massage therapist over next week, at least! :) Seriously, I am so happy that this has encouraged Anthony to use his muscles like he used to. I imagine that it isn't just his heart that remembers the pain and emotions, but Proverbs does mention that the heart thinks. Science has since confirmed that our organs do speak to us, so this therapy session makes perfect sense. When Steve and I minister to people with emotional trauma, we often encounter "body memories" that cause great conflict in the soul. God is so good to care deeply about these issues, so we can be 100% well and whole as we share Christ's gospel with the world. Anthony does that every day, and we are so proud of him!

Praying for you daily, and for your dad as well. God bless you all with His peace, which passes all understanding.

Thank You, Lord!

It was wonderful to hear your descriptions of Anthony's treatment. You did a great job providing images that helped us to imagine it as much as we're able. If only money weren't ever an obstacle, but then there would be other obstacles, too. You're doing a great job with Anthony and I will of course add my prayers that the right decision be made. I know that you're such great parents that you don't need those prayers, though. You know what's best for your boy.

Okay, okay. I get it. You all had fun without me. Fine. Rub it in, Trish and Chrissy! Fine. Well, now you've gone and done it - I have to write 100 times, "I will not covet." Man! :)

I love the communion pics --- on the trampoline was best, though the one with those dimples showing was just too beautiful! I loved them all!!!

I'm so sorry about the sunburn, Anthony! Next time, place cloths dipped in tea on the burns, and it will relive the pain while healing the burn. It's the tannic acid in the tea that heals. I've done this dozens of times with my kids and grands for burns of all kinds, and it has never failed.

Well, aren't I just full of advice this morning? LOL!

Now, on to writing my 100 sentences ...

"You will keep in perfect peace

whose thoughts are fixed on You!

Trust in the Lord always,

for the Lord God is the eternal Rock."

I thought sure that I made a banner for Anthony's birthday for here, but I guess I didn't! Well, Happy 12th Birthday, Anthony! What a blessed event - in every way. You are stronger and taller and just an amazing young man. I KNOW that you will be 100% again, and we will hardly be able to contain ourselves. Well, then, we just won't!
Matt and Laura, God bless you on your First Communion and Laura getting the thingy. Reminded me of Reese's sister Riley, getting her "chip"! The Lord has to love these things! :) Matt, your smile/grimace is so ... all boy! Loved it!

I will be praying that the Walk is a wonderful success and is used to make a difference. I love you all!

I'm so glad the flu is on its way out the door! It is here, too. I had it for over a week - it was very hard to get rid of this year! I'm so excited about the Walk! For all of the MLD-stroyers attending, please make sure you register! We're trying to get a good headcount, so we make sure we have enough t-shirts! :) I can't wait to see everyone! Love you all!

Hi Tomaino's, So sorry to hear that everybody is sick. I was just catching up on your journal and was surprised (and quite happy) to see my name mentioned. Let me say, I was very honored to have met your family at JMHS' Beauty and the Beast. I have been following your journey for a long, long time and to have finally met all of you was truly awesome to say the least! I pray for you all the time and meeting you was an answer to my prayers. You are my idols. To have the strength and perseverence to make it through this journey, with such a strong belief in God is truly amazing. Keep it up, things will work out! You have a beautiful family and the kids are more adorable in person. With that, I'll let you go but please know that I will be here for the long run. God bless you and your wonderful family.

Ahh, the dreaded flu. Sorry to hear that it has hit your household. Hopefully you are all on the mend now, and Mike has escaped it : )

Michele ~ I must tell you how beautifully you write. I know people have said that before on this site, but it is so true. You definetly have a way with words.

Good luck with with walk. I'd love to join in, but circumstances do not allow at this time.

I'm so sorry to hear the flu got to you all, after all. But at least you got it now and not in May???? All things considered ... :)

I can't believe that I'm going to miss the Walk, as Steve was going to go with me, and then down to SC to see my family. I'm having my fifth hip surgery April 24, and the doctor said no traveling for 2 months! I just know that I'm going to be crying all that weekend,as I had really got myself geeked up about it. I want to see your kids so badly! So please give them major big hugs from a lady they don't even remember, who thinks the world of them!

Loving you all, and praying that you bounce back with no problems!

I am so sorry to hear that everyone has been sick at your house. Hope everyone feels better fast--and hope Mike escapes it; the faster the germs leave your house, the better off you will be. I am so very sorry that I can't be at the MLD walk in May. I think I told you we have a first communion in Virginia. Colleen will also be moving out of the dorm that Fri. into the APARTMENT!!!! Jr. year they go off campus and the apt. was available on the 15th of May. So we will be going to Maryland on Friday on the way down to Virginia. I'll be thinking of "the gang"; take some pictures!!! Feel better fast.

But you are always in my thoughts. Thru the years reading your journal has always kept me strong. You always have the right words to say to remind me what faith is all about.
I thank you for sharing your thoughts and prayers because it is the reminder I need when things are not always the way you would like it to be.

Sorry Matt and Anthony are sick with colds, but happy to hear Laura didn’t get one, too. Michele, you really are amazing. Your words about Anthony are so moving. Just as Anthony inspires and teaches you, so do you inspire and teach me (and many others, I am certain). And you always bring a smile to my face when you speak of your daughter. I was the only girl in between two brothers, so I think I know how she feels. You just have to keep reminding Laura that being the only girl DOES have its advantages. I am also an American Idol fanatic. This year is kind of tough. It’s actually the first year I have yet to vote ‘cause I like too many of them (this year has some great talent). I’m down to David Cook, Michael Johns, David Archuleta, Brooke White and Carly Smithson (but not necessarily in that order). The last few weeks should be really good! Hope that by the time you read this entry, all will be all done with their colds. Have a great week!

Oh, gosh, now I have proof that I'm getting to be a doddering old grandmother. I see that in my just-posted guestbook entry, I essentially repeated the same post I'd entered a week or two ago. Maybe I'm just a proud grandmother, though. The thoughts remain true, though, and I remain impressed with you and your family.

I'm so sorry to hear that Matt is still feeling under the weather and hope both he and Anthony are soon tip-top again. I can relate to your comments about Anthony and his future. I majored in physics my first three years in college before switching majors, so I'm science-oriented, too, but I have as my object lesson a four-year-old granddaughter who was supposedly so profoundly retarded that she could not process sound, who at a year could barely lift her hands to her midline and who still had head drag, who was not supposed to be able to ever sit up or crawl, much less walk, and who likely would not live past two. She not only sits up but walks and runs, although certainly not with a normal gait or balance, and her non-verbal (because it turns out she had gone deaf) IQ tests show that she's not only not profoundly retarded but is actually quite bright. Her cochlear implants have enabled her to reenter the speaking and hearing world, although imperfectly due to other difficulties with her tongue, upper palate and throat. She has many problems ahead of her, several surgeries at least, and my daughter doesn't know her ultimate prognosis, but don't stop asking for and expecting progress for Anthony, at whatever rate it happens. Emmi's doctors were kind and experienced people, people who cared, but they didn't know what Emmi and God were capable of doing together, and no one is sure that Anthony and God can do together, either.

I like David Cook, too, Michele! There are lots of good ones this year...and of course, I'm addicted! Add to that, "Dancing With the Stars," and "Hell's Kitchen," and you have a reality show junkie on your hands! LOL!

Thanks for coming out of lurkerdom! :)

I love you!!

I don't know why my post didn't show up, but I was very thrilled to hear from you, Michele! I know you must be so busy with all that is going on in your life, and I hope you don't feel guilty about not being two people in one body!

It sounds like Mr Anthony is doing very well! If he only talks when he is in distress, we can hardly complain when he doesn't talk much! :) Glad to hear that Matt is a whirlwind - you know the saying, "Boys are like clocks - they have to run!" So just let him be who he is; no one minds! Is Miss Laura too busy for this fever to get to her? Way to go, LG! All in all, it sounds wonderful on this end ... we remember much worse days, weeks, months.

Blessing you all with incredible joy in the Holy Spirit, knowing that "Happy is that people whose God is the Lord!"

Thank You, Lord!

Michele... it was great to see an update! Yes, Idol is awesome this season. My vote goes to David Cook, all the way. I love that guy, although Duffy has issues with his hair. (David Cook's hair, that is. Not his own. Or lack thereof. No offense, Mike. But I digress...) HAAAAA! Speaking of which, I also like the dreadlock guy, Jason Castro. LOL Hope you have a smile on your face after reading this because I am now cracking up over here.... !

I hope both Matt and Anthony are recovering and that Laura hasn't gotten their colds. I know what you mean about the therapists liking Anthony's spunk: my four-year-old granddaughter was never supposed to sit up, much less crawl or walk. She not only walks but also runs, although she remains quite unsteady. Some therapists are still amazed that she can do any of it, but we believe it's her spunk that got her there. I also believe it's my daughter's attitude and willingness to keep raising her expectations for her daughter, as you've always done with Anthony, too!

Guess what? I just signed up on a page that is supposed to alert me when you update! We will see how it works! I have become totally dependent on update notification emails. Hi Tomaino's! It was so nice to finally meet all of you last night at Beauty and the Beast. I hope you all enjoyed the show, it was awesome! As I said to you last night, I still continue to pray for all of you. I thought that your children were adorable in pictures but they are even more adorable in person! You have a beautiful family. I recognized Anthony as you walked in and then looked around for Matt and Laura and then just to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me, I looked for you before I found the nerve to come up to you to say hi. I am in awe of you and how you've handled this entire situation with your kids. I don't know if I could have been as strong as you guys. Hello everyone! Michele, it was nice to see you and the kids at Lorrie's. Boy they have grown up so much and are totally adorable. I just had to tell you that I thought Anthony looked awesome...so alert and responsive. What great posture he had too. I was talking to him while you were in th other room and I really felt that he was engaged more than ever! I even think he remembered me. I know he's on the verge of his breakthrough and I'm so praying for it. I'm so glad that emotions are flowing through him and he's expressing them. That's a big step in the right direction. We are so sorry for your loss. As I read your tribute to Steve, I vividly remember him being the consistent driver/companion/traveler during all the trips to CHOP, etc. Steve sounds like one of a kind. Our hearts go out to you all.

Hope the sick bug has made its exit from your home. Anthony can then get back to focusing on the verbal progress he is making.

If I may be so bold...I want to tell you all that your family is a true inspiration to us (and I'm sure others). I know you probably think that you are just living your life, taking each day as it comes, but believe me when I tell you that the way you deal with each day and the strength and bonds that are evident in your family and with your extended family are a true inspiration. It's what many people, including me, strive to be.

God Bless you all. Although we aren't in your day to day life, you are with us in thoughts and prayers more than you know.

Love,

I'm so sorry to hear about Steve --- I do remember you mentioning him often in the updates. This is so sad, but I'm glad that he renewed his faith before he passed away.

It was thrilling to hear that Anthony is continuing to progress in vocalizing and to know that he is able to communicate his needs so well. As winter wears on ... and on and on! we are ever grateful for the little things that keep life from being dry and mundane, that give us joy amid the stuggles. God is good.

Loving you all.
