Follow Blake's Journey to Beat Leukemia

Welcome to Blake's websiteBR>

Blake was diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL)on December 17, 2003. Just 11 days after his 3rd birthday, and just 1 day before his baby sister Denay was born. He was in remission early, and responded very well to the chemotherapy. Blake started the maintenance phase of his chemotherapy in August 2004. He received an IV injection of chemotherapy once a month in Omaha and on the 3rd month he received a spinal injection of chemo. During this time Blake was also taking oral meds at home. He had to have his blood drawn every 2 weeks to see how his body was holding up.

Blake had his 1st port removed just before Christmas 2006 due to blood clots. He had to finish up the last few months of his therapy getting pokes and iv pokes to receive his meds and check his counts. He took it like a champ.

In March 2007 Blake received his last spinal injection and on April 20th he took his last dose of oral meds.

Blake had a very wonderful 5 months of being chemo free. He played his 3rd year of t-ball, rode horses, worked at his "ranch" and just really enjoyed being healthy. He loved kindergarten and making new friends in school.

But on September 6, 2007, our worst fears came true, the leukemia was back. Blake was again admitted to Children's Hospital in Omaha on the 5th of Sept, and confirmed on the 6th of a relapse. He had several blood transfusions, platelet transfusions, bone marrow tests, and spinal taps. He kept a good spirit, although grew tired of the hospital,

Blake is now doing wonderful and has been chemo free for 1 whole year! Our prayers were definately answered!
Thank you to everyone for your love and support!
Please take a look at the pictures, and sign Blake's guestbook!

GIVE BLOOD!!!!!!The American Red Cross is needing all types. We all want to make sure there is enough supply to help save a life! Blake has needed several transfusions of blood and platelets. There are many kids out there that also need transfusions daily! PLEASE, PLEASE, give blood!

Wow, where in the world has time gone? The days just seem to fly by anymore! Everyone tells me to get use to it, the older the kids get, the faster times goes, I'm beginning to think they are right!

Ok, so a re-cap of what's been going on in the Pelster household:

Since finding out that Denay has Celiac Disease, we've learned a whole new way of thinking about food. It's becoming easier, at home anyway. When we are out and about it's still a little difficult, but we'll get there! She feels so much better! I can't believe what a difference it has made in her. She has more energy, her physical appearance has improved, and just her overall attitude is better. She's a new girl! Still sweet as can be, that hasn't changed, but it's so great to see her feeling well. She's doing a fantastic job on watching what she eats too. She's more likely to look at a label on something she's not sure about than I am! She will read it and ask me if it's ok. How mature for a 7 year old hu! She doesn't really even seem to mind when I tell her she can't have something. I think she finally feels good and doesn't want that to change. So she is great about sticking to her diet!

In January and Feb, Blake played youth basketball for the first time. The 4th 5th and 6th graders had a team. Thank you to Coach Hager and Coach Clough, the boys had a blast and it was so fun to watch them. Blake really enjoyed it, and since the season ended, he has been going out each night to shoot hoops in the shop. That's his new pasttime, and I couldn't be happier! My step-bro Matt has given him a few pointers, and Blake has really enjoyed learning from him.

We are still working on the renovations to our house. When you only have one day a week to work on it, it's kind of slow going but we are beginning to see progress, so that's good!

Now on to the best news!!!!! This Saturday, April 2nd, marks Blake's 1 year post chemo anniversary! I can't believe he's been done with chemo for 1 year!!!!! Way to go Blake. I'm so proud of you and you really are mom's hero! I'm not sure if we will do anything "extra" special. That is up to him. It seems that these milestones seem to mean a lot more to me than they do to him at this point. I'm getting the feeling that he'd just like to forget it ever happened, and just go through life celebrating things like normal kids. Of course, if that is his wish, then so be it. But if he would decide that he'd like to celebrate days like April 2nd, then I'm right there with him. So this is his choice. Even if he decides on down the road he wants to remember things like this, that's great with me. I'll let him be his own person now! He will always just have to expect a few "extra" hugs on those special days! But he knows me well enough to know that will always be the case!

As far as his health goes, he's doing fantastic. We've been getting his labs checked every month, and he has gone to Omaha every three months since last April. All reports have been perfect. He will go back to Omaha in May after school is out, for his next check up and an ECHO. Then, he'll be good for 6 months! Man, I'm going to miss those gals at Chilren's if I don't get to see them for 6 months! :) That's ok though!

Blake has now hit 5'2" and weighs in at 113lbs, at 10 years old! So you can see, he's doing fabulous! We couldn't feel more blessed!

Well, I guess that's about all I have to report, as you can probably tell, I'm just filled with joy and appreciation for healthy kids, a normal life, and of course, all of your support over the past 71/2 years! Our prayers have been answered!

I will sign off now, but please remember, no news on here is good news for us, and also please have a wonderful and safe spring!

God bless you all!
Kassie
