Journal

Hello,

I am going to try my best to choose my words carefully, but also to give you a better picture of what is presently going on with Matthew.

The cancer has spread very rapidly to Matthew’s body. Of course, we cannot see inside, but…..we can tell that it has gone into his head. The left side seems to be consuming probably most of it. He has parts of his head that have bulges now where the cancer is pushing on his skull and making it swell.

A mass of cancer is behind his eyes, so this now has pushed his eyes forward. With all the pressure to them, it has made them black and blue and very swollen. The tumor has actually pushed through the sides of his eyes, and has put a film over them. Matthew can no longer see. And he can no longer close his eye lids. It took awhile to get use to the idea that he can still sleep, but with his eyes wide open.

In speaking to our doctors in Minneapolis and them conversing with Dr. Serabe here, it was suggested that we might try some radiation just on his eyes, hopefully to shrink the tumor that is right behind them. If this works, it will allow him to at least close his eyes. The radiation directed spots are not over his eyes, but on the temples of each side and a spot right in between his eye brows.

July 1st was our first trip to the Bismarck Cancer Center to have this started. It was done quickly. Matthew was scared you could tell, the only pain he felt was lying on the hard surface and placing his head in their hard mold. This is to prevent any movement. Honestly though, I think he was too scared to move a muscle. I was able to talk to him through an intercom and watch him on a screen. He did very well. And again, it was done in minutes.

Yesterday, July 2nd was his second treatment. Again, very quickly done, he did well. Still scared, but he was in and out of there within minutes. We don’t go back now until Monday, July 6th.

In speaking with the Radiologist Oncologist there, he said from the beginning, they will only do 10 treatments. If at 5 treatments, Matthew can close his eyes, they will stop. Of course, this is all very scary and dangerous at the same time, and it takes a lot out of Matthew to move him around so much, so…..we just have to cross our fingers that this works.

As far as our clinic visits, we go on Mondays and Thursdays, for awhile now Matthew has needed platelets and red blood each time. His body just consumes it.

In not so much detail as I have about his eyes, the cancer has made Matthew a chubby little boy. Honestly, he is as cute chubby as he is skinny!
